Our official DQ8 appreciation/help thread.

Damn straight, and it’s pretty short and sweet. I’ve found myself calling my team sometimes to soften a boss on the first few rounds and see what he does.

So far, for me anyway, bosses have been pretty easy. I’ve just used Psyche up on Hero (who I, just like in every other DQ game, named Erdrick) and Yangus until they reach at least 50 (100 if it’ll go the first try), have Angelo cast Increase (or heal if neccesary), and have Jessica cast Bikill on Hero and Yangus, followed by a Sap or two on the boss.

Question: So I was fighting some fairly easy monsters (a Redtailed Hipster, two Hades’ Condors, and two Gold Golems), I summoned my monster team, looked down for a minute to type something, and my team was gone. Where’d they go? They could have easily taken out that group within 3 turns. Do they sometimes go all insubordiate or something?

It never happened to me. Did you accidently press ‘away’ on round 2? Away being equivalent to Unsummon. Or maybe these monsters had some kind of team repel…

Maybe I accidentally pressed triangle when I put down the controller… -_-

[edit] It happened again, also Hades Condors this time… I’ll have to start paying attention… -_- [/edit]

[update] Hades’ Condors can cast “Blasto,” which seems to be the same as the old Limbo spell from the classic DW games. Regardless, it sends your monster team away, and forces you to resume the battle from that point. I should have expected that since Hades’ Condors can use Limbo in DQ3. [/update]

While we’re talking about gaining levels, does anyone know a reliable place to run into metal monsters? I saw a metal babble in Trodain, but couldn’t kill it before it ran, and haven’t seen another there since. I think I saw a metal slime in the Argonia region at one point, but I don’t recall where.

There’s Metal Kings in the Dragon Graveyard. A nice cool 30010 experience, but they’ve got ~20 Hp so you need a skill that’ll cause a critical hit.

anyone have a good anti metal strategy? How well does metal cut work? Should I bother with crit abilities?

Metal Cut does 2 damage I think if it hits- don’t have it yet. My advice is Lightning Thrust which I got at 59 Spear- it’s an instant crit if it hits which guarantees the metal will die.

To find a large number of metal slimes: go to the cottage near the Royal Hunting Grounds (west of Argonia). Very near the cottage, there are two small alcoves in the western wall of the bordering hills. The first has one tree in it, the second (and farther) of the two has two trees. Stand in the one with two trees and whistle. You’ll get a lot of metal slimes here. They show up at least once every five battles, along with other enemies or in groups of eight. I have both the Hero and Angelo using Metal Slash, Jessica doing the Twin Dragon Lash, and Yangus attacking (Hatchet Man with the axe never seemed to work, so I just attack with the scythe). I came to the area with my hero at level 26, after a couple hours he’s level 34. Just run from any fight that doesn’t include Metal Slimes, it really speeds things up.

Can’t help with Liquid Metal Slimes or Metal Kings.

A friend of mine is of the type that feels that heroes should only use bladed weapons, regardless of who they are; thus, she boosted Jessica’s knife ability. Now, she’s even able to use Swords. I don’t know how worth it this is, but I figured that I should throw the information out here, for anyone who wants to try it.

Do you mean actually inside the hunting grounds? I saw something like that in there but not close by outside…

edit - Never mind, I’m cool.

This is the first time in about 2 weeks that I’ve really had a chance to sit down and play. Thus, I’ve spent most of the day trying to catch up to you guys. I’m now at the dark ruins.

The 2nd form of the boss of the dark ruins is a sonuvabitch! He pwnd me with easy!

I steamrolled through the Dark Ruins boss. the only chance he would have had would have been to make Angelo run out of MP, but as it was I finished with a good 50 MP left, no items used. Since he nullifies buffs so often, I ended up using only Accelerate out of all of Jessica’s spells, then having her contribute to the damage with Twin Dragon Lash. That leveling paid off, I think.

I just used Oompf when he kept doing that. I was really pissed since I had just gotten maxed tension for the Hero when he first did the stupid ice wave. Instant Tension reset ~_~. I didn’t have any problem really- just kept having Angelo Multiheal whenever everyone was getting low.

I just reached Empyrea, the Godbird Island today. I also made a Liquid Metal Sword out of Rusty Old Sword, Slime Crown, and Orihalcom. It’s something like 118 Attack Power I think- made me switch to swords for now.

Its quite helpful, she can equip any sword that the hero can.

Wtf. I just see a whole lot of trees. Edit: found it. man was I ever in the woods. I find executioner with Yangus (axes) works very nicely. Metal cut is disapointing. 2 damage at most? I’m jacking up spears once I get courage up. Thunderthrust is also nice. I also prefer to intimidate rather than flee. They drop chests and it works 100%.

1-How do I use thunder thrust? I got the skill, but all I have is lightning thrust o_O?

2-Where do I find the nook herb for the crimson robe?

  1. Lightning Thrust I think is the more powerful form- just use it. Whichever one is 59 skill is best.

  2. No clue on that- I’ve been wanting one of these for a while -_-

You can find the Nook Grass in Orktusk, or Marta’s Cottage which are both on the continent north of Arcadia.

That really doesn’t help, Hellhawk. I have the ultimate key, I can’t pick the grass in the cave in the back and there’s not a single dickhead that sells it in Orktusk.

I was just going by what it said in the guide, I haven’t had much time to play lately so I’m not that far.
