Our official DQ8 appreciation/help thread.

Ok, I reached Baccarat. I don’t have time to do involved stuff this week, so I was going to stick to leveling and doing the monster arena (and cleaning up chests I need the magic key for). I have heard of a forest of metal slimes somewhere - can you point me in the right direction? Remember, my farthest reference point is Baccarat, so if you say “it’s near Argonia,” you’ll have to mention where Argonia is too.

Also, suggestions for where I can pick up some good monsters? As of now I’ve only beaten the first rank.

Get Talos and Chopera. They’re described in the thread.

Goldman and Golem are pretty good, too, but they cap out early. When you have them in a group with Talos, they get a good ability.

ARGH! The game crashed on me! AFTER the Dark Ruins boss, and I hadn’t SAVED YET.

RAGE.

I think I can imagine EXACTLY what the plot of the rest of the game will be now that I’m in Argonia. BTW, get your epic mounts people.

I love the tiger. I got up to the Dark Ruins (this time for real today >_>). I love Spears- I made a Demon Spear that has 86 Attack Power and some Platinum Mail for the hero. It’s pretty disgusting really. I’ve been messing around with the alchemy pot a lot, but I haven’t found a way to make a really nice Scythe for Yangus yet, ah well.

Where’d you get the parts for the spear?

The Battle Fork and Devil’s Tail are both in chests in the Argonia Vault with the mirror. You can buy a Poison Needle in Baccarat for 1900 gold which is the 3rd part. Add them all together, and you’ve got a very nice weapon. It can sometimes 1 shot enemies too according to the description, but it doesn’t happen very often.

Beat Dark Ruins boss today- I think I got lucky on the sleep part since he only use it once on Yangus, and one of the Dopplegangers immediately woke him up. I had the Hero use Zap each turn while the two Dopplegangers were out, and Jessica used Boom, while Yangus (with Oompf cast on him) used Stainless Steal Scythe on one of them. After finishing them off, I had the Hero and Yangus psych up to 75 and used Multithrust (880 damage) and Yangus use Stainless Steal for 840 which finished him off.

Wow, I totally have some leveling to do if I want to make it through the Dark Ruins… I suppose I can take care of that while I’m getting money and trying to defeat Talos for my monster team.

I advise lv30ish for the ruins, not for the mobs, but for the boss. You need the skills and HP/MP for a very long and drawn out battle.

Plus, hey, hitting for more ow never hurt anyone, except him I guess.

But I strongly advise having the zombie slayer if your hero is a swordsman. Zombiebane + holy talisman in the pot.

Holy talisman being a gold rosary (500$ in Neos) a strong tattoo or whatever it’s called and I believe one holy water.

Why not the multithrust approach?

Multithrust is fine for a boss if you’re spear-focused, but the Dark Ruins are chockfull of undead, I 1-shotted EVERYTHING save the Trolls with the Zombie Slayer.

Yeah- I’m completely Spear/Courage focused with my hero, so I just went with it.

Beat Rank B in the Monster Arena- the Killer Machines are wonderful monsters to recruit. They can attack twice per turn and have very nice attack and defense.

Where can I find said killer machines <.<

The two I got are in Blizzard Peaks, northwest of Arcadia. One’s in the southwestern part of the area, and the other is in the northwestern part.

I’ll work on the Zombie Slayer then… I’ve had my hero on swords and courage for the most part, with a few points for spears.

Another question - are the amounts of skill points awarded per level per character set, or are they random like with attribute increases? I’m somewhat frustrated by the low number of skill points that the hero and Angelo are getting.

Where might I acquire a Zombiebane, and, indeed, where is Arcadia (it looks like the prize for rank B is a scythe, which is what Yangus is best in)?

As for skill points, I do think they’re random. I remember earlier on saying how many skill points Yangus was getting, and someone else around the same level mentioned how few he was getting. So yeah >_<

It evens out eventually, though. Angelo started getting 7 points a level and such whereas when I got him he was only getting 2 or 3.

Zombiebane is in Argonia’s bazaar, after you do the events at the castle.

And the third killer machine is innaccessible until you get the 2nd method of travelling, not counting the lv40 mount.

(That’s a WoW joke, you don’t need to be lv40 for the tiger)

Arcadia is north of Argonia.

Man, levelling is easy when you just let your monster team do the work. No more having to heal after every battle, no more strategy involved, just call in the team every single battle, and let them do the work.
