HARD ROCK/METAL

  1. Electronical (Daft Punk, Michel Jean-Jarre)
  2. Demoscene (necros/fm, Chaser, Crash, jax/korozone etc.)
  3. Game music - electronic, ambient, trance and derivatives (Alexander Brandon, Chris Huelsbeck, Michiel van den Bos etc.)

Well, Hiryuu…I fit into that category, maybe I could explain what I mean by it. I don’t know if everyone means this, but here’s what I mean… :stuck_out_tongue:

I like a lot of music. I’d say I like more music than I dislike. If someone ever wants to show me anything new to me, regardless of what it is, who it is, anything like that…I’m willing to give it a try; however, I have to find a certain appeal to the music I’m listening to, and generally, I allocate different appeals to broad genres. For example, the first thing I listen for in rock is the lyrics. If I don’t like the lyrics, that’s it. Dance music (Rap, R&B, Funk, Techno, etc) on the other hand, I could give a crap about what the lyrics are. I just wanna dance to it. I have different things I look for in all kindsa music, but some genres and subgenres I can find absolutely no appeal. Let’s take 3 genres that I dislike more often than not:

  1. Banda music. It’s that traditional spanish sounding music (It’s kinda like the pop equivalent in Mexico, as its what you hear more on the radio than what we’d call pop). I just don’t understand WHAT people like about this music. For starters, the music has odd meter, tempo, and syncopation, PLUS it’s not very percussion-intensive at all, making it very hard to dance to. The music itself is rather bland, and sounds a little cheery. The cheery thing doesn’t bother me much; however, the lyrics are like, the antithesis of the music. 99% of all Banda music talks about being duped by girls and doing drugs. It’s not really catchy either, cos the melodies stay around one note, and the songs altogether are not complex. There’s pretty much nothing good about this music, except for that the Brass players and the vocalists are usually pretty good.

  2. Emo. Subgenre of rock. In rock music, lyrics come first. Most emo music is really whiney, obnoxious, and depressing. I tend to veer away from tragic songs, especially tragic love songs, because they are normally done in a depressing way, rather than a profound, original way. Emo songs mostly tackle this subject (or the opposite - a really sappy, happy love song), in the two most obnoxious ways: 1 - Unpoetic, blatant, desperate and annoying, or 2 - So damn cryptic that no one could possibly derive anything out of it; the only way you know that the subject is tragic is because it’s emo! :stuck_out_tongue: Thusly, Emo annoys the hell out of me. Not all of it is bad. I’ve heard songs that I like; but on the whole, it’s just annoying to me. What really saves Emo is its intensity and energy. The emotion of songs are enough to make me feel them at times.

  3. Indie rock. Subgenre of rock. A lot of people that like Indie will probly disagree with me on this…but I think Indie can be summarized as “emo without the emotion.” It really is just a zany, odd, experimental genre of music. If there are any lyrics, they’re usually really lame, and even downright ridiculous. Worst of all, there’s absolutely no energy in the songs. Sometimes, I forget I’m even listening to music.

Now, I don’t hate every last song in the genre of Banda, Emo, and Indie. But, I do know that from what I’ve heard, I’ve disliked more than I’ve liked. It’s not a matter of shutting myself off from the genre, it’s a matter of not liking the majority of the bands I’ve heard. And if I don’t like the majority of music in a genre I hear, then I think it’s safe to say that I don’t generally like it. I don’t hate all of it, and I still like a crapload of music.

Now, rather than make a large, long-winded speech explaining this, I recognize all the ideas I’ve just put on the table when someone says “I like everything except <this>, <this>, and <this>.” I hope that clarified something for you cos it took a while to write :stuck_out_tongue:

Mostly rock… about it. I don’t listen to Rap/Hip Hop/R&B/Country/Other.

Iron Maiden would be considered heavy metal, or to be even more specific, new wave of british heavy metal (NWOBHM). But some would consider them power metal. Rhapsody and Blind Guardian, those guys are power metal too.

I like almost everything composed before 1900, but especially Gregorian chants, troubadour songs, renaissance lute songs, and many, many pieces from the Baroque, classical, and romantic periods of music. I tend to prefer European music, but I also enjoy other kinds of music as well, including Middle-Eastern and Indian (I like the sitar).

After 1900, I like only jazz and some blues until the late 1960s, when I begin to like some rock and roll and folk. After that, I like alternative rock and some metal (generally not the extremely violent kinds). I love the kind of music which is popularly called ‘grunge’. I like some softer varieties of rock as well. I like dance and electronic music, and some house, but not trance, and only when I am dancing or at the fitness centre working out. I can tolerate country and bluegrass only if I am dancing and having a lot of fun. I despise most pop and dislike whatever I depise. I find Indian pop music hilariously funky, but I hate Canto-pop and J-pop. I like a little rap (the alternative kinds) and some reggae and Latin, but usually only when dancing.

I think I’d like some of what Sir Percy mentioned in his first paragraph. My favorite genre is techno however, anything that has that feel to it and I’m drawn to it. Other stuff I like: r&b, sadly pop music, 80’s and new wave, new age, celtic stuff like Clannad, disco/funk, little bit of swing, some jazz, tiny bit of smooth jazz, have on occasion liked some rap, a couple of slow country songs, j-pop, anime songs, videogame music even if its midi’s, few oldies, little bit of classic rock…etcera.

I’d love to find more like Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew album.

I think I like rock music, for the most part, but I’ll listen to anything I deem good.

Whatever I feel like.

I’m fairly sensitive to loud noise, so anything that involves lyrics being screamed out is ew for me.

Right now, I’ve got a bunch of VGM, some classical, some Jpop, and some oldies on my computer.

Simon and Garfunkel is love.

Death, black, trash and doom metal. Oh, and grindcore.
I’m new here, by the way. Yay. Or something.

Grindcore is some sweet stuff man! There’s quite a few grindcore bands here in Vancouver, my favourite being Crackwhore.

Pop…pop…popcorn! Ok, pop music stuff.

I guess it is called indie rock. >_>

I like Metal, thrash, hard rock, rock, and some pop. =/

These are my major fav’rite bands.

KoRn
Megadeth
Metallica
Green Day
Our Lady Peace
