The Ys 3 remake Oath in Felghana was pretty decent on that point.
The bosses were like “okay, it’s got a lot of health and I’m not quite good enough at this game to beat it, so I’ll gain another level”, but it was never like the others, which are like “fuck you! You will deal 0 damage! Come back when you’ve got your big boy pants”.
In Ys Book II at least during or after Burnland you can just lob a couple of fireballs while equipped with the Hawk Idol in the general vicinity of enemies and forget about the grind. Though it’s just as important that you know the boss’s pattern as it is having the appropriate level/equipment.
I found if I just played the game normally, I was usually at the “right” level by the time I got to the boss- the game seemed to encourage you to get to that “right” level. If you were at or above, normal enemies gave next to no experience, and if you were below, they gave tons.
I’m replaying Valkyria Chronicles right now. I miss having all of my high-accuracy weapons, it feels like I waste a lot of CP just cause my troops miss so much.
Oath in Felghana worked like that for me.
Ark o Napishtim… I have no idea how they were expecting me to do this other than grind. I was apparently at around the right level for the first boss, because I did decent damage without going up to ridiculous amounts. Maybe twenty minutes later, after I’ve gone to the next area, the enemies there suddenly dealt insane amounts of damage. I started thinking I’d made a wrong turn somewhere, because regular enemies could kill me in <5 hits.
After a few levels, I was at the “expected” level and the game flowed properly again, until the boss which suddenly required grinding and upgrading again.
I saw a friend play Valkyria Chronicles some time ago. It’s one of the games that really makes me wish I had more consoles than just an old GameCube (not counting portables).
Due to getting a GameStop gift card during Christmas I ended up having to get Lufia DS for :10bux:. My initial impression of the game wasn’t that good but it’s been getting better. Game still feels clumsy as hell but I’m getting used to it. However the changes to the game and the plot make me feel like they made an entirely new game built entirely on the striped down frame of the original game. The puzzles thus far have only really been glorified platforming than anything impressive. Still has the awesome music though.
Suikoden II: Lost a wallet, beat a giant rat, going to try to not recruit Ridley in favor of recruiting Boris (unless I have to recruit him now then lose him later).
You can’t not recruit Ridley. To get Boris, you need to still have Ridley with you when you are at Tinto (Meaning he needs to not die when he gets ambushed) and agree to Nanami’s request to flee.
A better question then. Which of the two should I take with me for a bad end run where I don’t get 108 stars (because I fucked up with the Matilda Gate glitch and permanently removed both Humphrey and Futch from the game)? Additionally which of the two female Suki 1 vets should I take as well?
Well, in the course of events that leads to Boris joining you, Ridley dies and it’s your fault for being a noncommittal chicken. So that’s very much the more “You fucked up, yo” path.
That said, it’s almost pointless to go all the way to the endgame instead of restarting if you know you fucked up as early as Two River. The no-star endings just sort of shave a whole chunk of the end, unless you are doing some sort of special run I don’t know aout.
As for Valeria and Kasumi… well, Valeria knows that one other knight chick wose name eludes me, but Kasumi has that whole “crush on Tir” and gets a scene with him if you bring her with you to recruit him in Gregminster. They’re both “good” (not Bad, not Woah Strong) party members, so it’s realy just a choice of who you like best.
I’ve decided to take my lumps this time and get the bad end first since once I play through a game I rarely go back for other routes and such. Besides why waste the opportunity to check out all the different characters including the different monster recruits. I’m just going for the lesser of the optional ones along with stuff like getting Nanami killed and such, but I do feel that a simultaneous run for a good run might prove beneficial. At least I know now not to accidentally wander into the Trading Post near Greenhill before seeing Toto get burned down.
Just finished my first run in 999 and got the bad ending, man I knew I was not gonna get a good ending in the first run but I thought I was doing pretty good, there was barely any indication you where screwing up. Anyways any of you have a recommendation on what ending to get now?
Wasn’t Lufia DS panned all around? (Also, what was with the dialogue in that Lufia II reimagining? Weird).
Tomorrow is Zelda day drools
Basically yes. Compared to some of the Ys games that were being discussed on the bottom of the last page (mostly the latter ones) this one feels much more clumsy in comparison. Moreover was the fact that the original version’s strongest element laid in the puzzles which got to be fairly headscratching even early on in the game, whereas in this version there have been some platforming tricks here and there but nothing near the level of brain teasers seen in the original and I’m already up past the Ancient Cave. And then there’s the plot which is more or less similar to the original but fairly abridged (admittedly the whole series had a problem with unnecessary scenario design) as when one of the game’s five towns have a total population of 8 NPCs things start to feel sparse. Additionally there were a few changes made to the plot like Lexis being around at the start as an NPC who is also now Doc Brown and provides Maxim McFly a ship to travel the world around in (this is not nearly as awesome as it sounds) and Iris is around constantly rather than occasionally but overall not much has changed yet due to there not being all that much there. A few things like the Phantom Fish scene and ::dekar!:: have been preserved but it otherwise feels striped to the bone.
The tl;dr of this post is that the only reasons why I got this game despite what they did to THAT scene were because a) I’ve pretty much given up hope that Lufia 2 will ever show up on the VC, b) I had a $10 gift card to GameStop that I got from Christmas and needed to burn, and c) I forgot that I also needed to place a preorder for Xenoblade Chronicles which that gift card could’ve been perfect for (I’ll have to walk back there later, thankfully I have until April to do so (although thanks to Global Warming I could probably make the walk now and not have to worry about inclement weather or temperature)).
In lighter news, another issue cropped up regarding my current run through of Suki II: Memory Card Real Estate. Thankfully I have another card even though it’s a piece of crap (guess which one I had my original DQVII run stored on before it got reformatted into oblivion; you know, the one where I was grinding myself up to tackle the final boss after getting my ass kicked by once before).
And here we go again…
I’ve started playing Pokemon Platinum. FOR THE FOURTH TIME! But at least this time I have a good excuse:
My computer died.
One moment of silence, please, in name of Wil’s computer. She served me well for ten years, despite slowing down a lot in recent times. (I’m not even sure what ‘killed’ it; it turns on but won’t boot. Maybe it can still be fixed, but why bother? She’ll break again soon anyway. I’m keeping it around for spare parts though. And no, I haven’t tried to recover the data yet- in part because I’m too busy, and in part because I fear it might contain malware.)
The good news is that- I have a new computer!! While I didn’t have the money to buy one (or I would have done so long ago) my best friend (and his brother and their father) pitched together to buy me one. Best Xmas gift ever!
It’s nothing special, but it works, and that’s what I care about. One thing: it came with Windows 7 preinstalled, and after years of using XP I’m occasionally puzzled by its quirks (how do you set it so all downloads go on the desktop, for example?) but nothing major. And of course, the first thing I did was to look for emulators. PS2 emus are probably beyond its power to run well, but anything else is fair game!
Anyway: Yes I started Platinum again because by God I’m going to finish this game, if it kills me!!! Ahem This time I said screw it and I’m cheating my way out of it though (not with Pokesav, that was too much trouble. I’m using cheat codes which for some reason, NOW work). Right now I’m up to the Cycling Road part.
More later.
Lufia DS == Beat. I haven’t even touched NG+ yet but I already know why this game was panned aside from that ridiculous extra ending. One of the most memorable things about Lufia II was its puzzles; here, the stuff that actually makes you stop and think don’t show up until the dungeon right before Amon. Beyond that there’s only two other instances where brain cells are needed, in the dungeon where the Dual Blade is kept and in the three towers dungeon. That’s it. There’s nothing else worth mentioning. But in actually this issue touches upon the actual issue that this game really is just an abridged retelling of Lufia II. A lot of the primary scenarios that were in the original version are here but there’s little else in between. Anyways I figured part of the reason I wanted to get this game was just to see how bad that scene was and then there’s the Ancient Cave to actually go through (instead of the gimped trial version that the first run has) so I’m off to go through Iris and Dual Blade’s Excellent Adventure as they help Doc Brown and Maxim McFly get Back to the Future. ::dekar!::
Well, I’m almost finished with Xenoblade! That game…it’s too good. But I really don’t have much left though. Gonna work on leveling up a bit and trying to take on the super-hard Unique Monsters. How hard are they? Max level is 99, the UMs go up to 120. Yikes.
Also bought and beat Cave Story+. Very awesome game.
Also just started Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations. But my DS’s battery is near-dead, so I gotta pony up some money and get a new one.

I highly recommend you do all the “other” endings first. The Coffin ending is a bit unique in that it’s a cliffhanger…unless you complete the Safe ending first. If you do all the other ends before the True Ending, it’ll give you an interesting perspective on the whole thing. It’ll be totally worth it.

Yeah I finally finished and I left the true ending for last and man that was awesome especially the last scene and now I’m hoping arksys decides to bring the sequel to this side of the world,to bad I will have to buy a PS Vita if I want to play it though
Still playing League of Legends and TF2. When I decide to jump back to consoles, I might finish up my umpteeth mania run of Tales of Symphonia, or pick back up on Dragon Quarter.
Currently trying out Civilization V, which I got ages ago when I was waiting for shogun 2 to come out and never actually ended up playing.
Man, the AI can’t do diplomacy worth shit. No, asshole, I will not give you every single piece of gold, resource and city besides my capital in exchange for a peace treaty after you just failed to fucking take a city, I’M THE ONE WHO’S WINNING.
Finally playing Zelda! Not advanced a lot though due to time constraints.
Went shopping yesterday and collected a few games including Personas 1 & 2 IS (PSP) as well as a copy of both Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (N64) and Demon’s Crest (SuperNES) in addition to an additional SuperNES controller to replace the ones that have fallen apart on me over the years. So I’ve decided to go through some Demon’s Crest and um…yeah I’ve started and apparently beaten it in about an hour or so. I only had the Ground Gargoyle form and the Tornado and Claw shots in addition to two urns, a vellum, and 9-10 heart containers total. Apparently beating some chump named Phalanx in some castle I didn’t notice before was enough to beat the game. Started it again and this time I’ve picked up an additional heart container or two and a vellum as well as the Buster Shot and a Skull.
As for Lufia I’ve taken a crack at the Ancient Cave as soon as I got Selan in my party but it ended badly when I hit about floor 83 or something and one of the more annoying enemies in the game received a new pallet swap that ended up bulldozing my (at this point) level 80~99 party into oblivion in short order. Apparently I need better Mystic Stones or some such before I try again (as well as a full party).
