Wert and Info got pwnd

sigh Those Linux heads brought this upon themselves. They HAD to go blackmail Microsoft, they HAD to tell them how to run Linux on the XBox, they HAD to forget what every TV series tells about blackmailing: it’ll get you screwed over in the end.

What else is new.
Microsoft will do everything they can to keep the XBox clean of unauthorised software, not strange since they lose money on selling the hardware.

Like the article said, it’s a double-edged sword. I hope someday net terrorists find a way to send a megavirus to all machines connected on the net making machines believe the virus is an update, M$ is blamed for it and then they won’t upload unwanted stuff to anyone anymore.

Desperation. Always a sure sign you’re winning.

de·ni·al
n.

  1. A refusal to accept or believe something, such as a doctrine or belief.
  2. An unconscious defense mechanism characterized by refusal to acknowledge painful realities, thoughts, or feelings.
  3. A river in Egypt.

I give it a month. After that all these updates will make no difference, and Linuxheads will be installing it on their Xboxes despite Microsoft’s contortions.

Still, why a Linux person would buy and Xbox in the first place is beyond me…aside from that it’s a Microsoft product, the thing is the size of a Buick.

/me likes his consoles slim, sexy, and Sony.

Microsoft is losing money on selling the XBox, and it costs less than a PS2. Of course Linux persons are buying it.

Actually…

I can still go out there and buy an X-box and get Linux on it without modding it. New ways to circumvent hindrances will always exist. Microsoft is fighting an uphill battle, and they know it. What they did only goes to prove that.

'Nuff said.

Oh, and Kraken; X-Box is basicly a PC with a few different ports and broadband capabilities. Thus, a really really cheap webserver. Maybe not a State-of-the-art webserver, but a really cheap webserver nonetheless.

I see. Very resourceful.

bows dramatically to Wert

Oh, and that brings another question to mind. I’m going to be doing a lot more programming soon, (I’m going to be taking Java at my college next semester, as I’m not allowed to take C, and I’ll also be looking into Perl and Python) and I’m looking for something UNIX-based for my PC. I’m thinking of downloading Debian GNU/Linux, and I’m wondering how it compares to the other Linuxes. Some of the literature I’ve read suggests it’s not a ‘true’ Linux at all, and I’m wondering what this entails.

I was actually at the Agora today to find Kero and ask him about this, but whatever…

I don’t know what makes some distrubutions more real than others, but I’d say Debian is real Linux. Moreso than mainstream releases as SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Lindows.
It has a different package and more functional package system than the alternatives, but the noticable differences pretty much stops at that.

What desperation? Winning what? Wert, consider getting dopamine reducing drugs. You have too many positive symptoms.

Kraken: Well, as per definition a Linux distribution is an operating system which runs on the Linux kernel. That’s about the only common thing they share with each others.

So Debian is as much Linux as Redhat, SusE, Mandrake and/or Slackware.

But it’s much closer to BSD than it is to “traditional” Linux. If you want traditional Linux, I’d say go with Slackware; if you want a system which is easy to maintain and install programs on and such, go with Debian. Or better yet, go with one of its many userfriendlier incarnations such as Libranet or XandrosOS (http://www.libranet.com and http://www.xandros.com respectively).

And if you want a good ObjectOriented language to learn, may I suggest C# and Mono? Yes, I’m well aware it’s .NET and that Microsoft developed it, but it’s still Open-Source and works pretty well. =)

I’ve got some C++ under my belt already, which is why my college won’t allow me to take C–it’s lower on the CS/IS circuit. I’ll look into C#. Now, is that pronounced “See-Hash” or “See-Pound”?

Okay, so I’ve got it down to either Debian or BSD UNIX of some flavor. It’ll probably be Debian. Thanks for your help.

sidenote: I do think its a bummer though that you can’t install linux on the Xbox anymore though. I’m not a zealot like some people, I just thought it was funny to be able to do that.

Neither. It’s pronounced “See-Sharp”. 8)

You’re welcome. =)

Oh, and Sin, Drugs are bad, m’kay?

If you want an ace Linux distro, try Gentoo.

It’s a nightmare to install, but once it’s installed, you never have to work again. Normally, I’m a RedHat guy, because RH works for me and a monkey can install it, but being a RedHat sysadmin automatically means you’re going to spend a lot of time resolving dependencies and more time configuring software than using it. With Gentoo, it’s just “emerge whatever” and you’re done.

they’re good when they’re designed to reduce schizophrenic hallucinations.

Martin: Yeah, Gentoo kicks ass, but there’s a problem with it - Due to the fact that it’s fairly new (It was released only last year) it hasn’t had time to mature yet as a distribution. I’d give it a couple of years to build up development libraries and package repositories first. And the installation is just… Pure hell. =P

Debian does all Gentoo does only it uses binary packages. So “apt-get update && apt-get upgrade” updates your entire system with all the newest software available. And it’s much faster to install. =)

Now that you mention it, I might just go out and buy an X-Box so I can get a cheap-as-dirt server, but how well does it work as a server for games?
