As for my reply, it was kind of a joke. Mario isn’t really known to use his plunger in battle, and and the burning into rings comment would never have been used in a serious argument.
Why Mario would really win is looking at how the two of them attack. Sonic curls into a fetal position and runs into things. Mario leaps into the air and lands with crushing force upon their skull. Each of them has basically two hits until they lose a life, unless sonic picks up more rings or Mario gets a growth mushroom. Assuming they don’t, Mario and sonic would each lose one hit when Mario jumped on Sonic. Mario would be able to attack again immediately, but Sonic can sometimes take a minute to get back in his attack roll. Thus, I say either it would be a draw or Mario would win.
Also, look at their enemies: A gigantic turtle Dragon with fire-breath, or a fatass with poorly designed robots.
You want a cool nemesis?
Mario games may have Peach. Peach has got it, bye-bye.

Finally, and most importantly, Mallow. He’s a fucking marshmallow. A talking, fighting, crybaby, marshmallow. Sonic can never beat that, except maybe with a sentient s’more. Maybe.
In other words, Mario has better allies.
Better allies? One word: Knuckles.

Mario 3 < Sonic 3
Mario World < Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic’s early games were much better than mario’s games. I still would rather play Sonic 2, 3, or S&K over any mario game to date.
But when Mario went 3d, he did a better job than sonic did. Sonic’s games lost their charm and went stupid after Sonic and Knuckles thus Nintendo’s Mario caught up and surpassed him.
This is unfortunate, really… I loved Sonic.
Oooooh, not to mention that Super Sonic is HELLA cooler than anything in any Mario game.
Knuckles is about as cool as Toad, Yoshi and Wario put together. However, Geno crushes Tails, and Mario also has the awesome Princess and Mallow.

How’s Geno better than Tails? Not only she can imitate Sonic’s razor spin (Although to this day I still haven’t figured out how she does it without the spikes) but she can hover a little… and she’s a certified airplane pilot! Besides, she has a luxury few oldskool video game characters came across: A surname.
I honestly don’t think you can say Geno and Mallow beat so and so when they’ve appeared in only one game (I think only SMRPG). If we’re going by that token, then Shadow is easily cooler than all of them combined. Especially with Knuckles. :3
Actually, Princess Sally is only a part of the short lived cartoon/long lived comic. IIRC she doesnt appear in any games (minus a cameo appearance in spinball, and supposedly Sonic CD).
Not that that matters, I like both series equally (and have jumped form favorites between the two too many times to like one or the other more. No more betrayals). I voted mario for breaking more ground with both the revival of the industry in 85 and the breakthrough to 3d (yes, there were 3d games before the n64, but Mario64 made them more popular than anything before)
