As for the 984’s comment about Mallow and Geno not being included, I disagree. They were indeed in SMRPG (I think one of them was also in another game, but I’m not too sure about that), which was a Mario game.
Shadow was also only in one game, but he wasn’t really much of an ally, and Smithy ties with him.
I’m not going to get into an argument over the gender of a boy fox with two tails on a video game. But the simple fact of the matter is that tails IS and always has been a male. Wheather or not this was obvious to anyone or not, its the way it was. If you still happen to have it, why not open your Sonic the Hedgehog 2 manual and notice in Tail’s description where it makes references to him as “He”.
If you do not have he original, you can access it in the special features of Sonic Mega Collection Plus for Xbox or PS2. I checked, he was a boy always.
Tails was a girl on both cartoon series… anyhow, the case is that s/he is one hell of a mechanic.
Sally has never appeared in any game (although I don’t know about Spinball, which wasn’t even a Sonic Team game)
HOW CAN Y’ALL BE FORGETTING AMY? She’s Sonic’s REAL “girlfriend”, even though Sonic doesn’t really like her. =P She was the girl in Sonic CD (that picture of her is circa Sonic CD). She now has a red dress, and she wears her spikes down), not Sally. She was also in both Sonic Drift games, both Sonic Adventure games, all the Sonic Advance games and Sonic Heroes. Basically, she’s in every Sonic game nowadays.

And holy fuck, people! Tails has never been a girl! In the Sonic 2 instruction manual (Which I hold in my hands as we speak, and was Tails’ first appearence), it explicitely says he’s a boy (as Izlude said). And Miles is a boy name anyway. HE’S NEVER BEEN A GIRL!! He was a boy in the games. He was a boy in the cartoons (go watch old episodes of them too if you don’t believe me). And he was a boy in the comic. Where do you people come up with this stuff?
Anyway, Sonic’s cast is almost cooler than Mario’s cast, especially with the recent additions of such awesome characters as Shadow and Rogue, but Daisy almost tips the scale back to Mario.
And as for people saying Shadow’s only been in one game, he’s been in Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Battle and Sonic Heroes at least. And he’ll probably be in all the rest of the Sonic games. The same cannot be said about Geno and Mallow (especially since they’re owned by Square Enix, not Nintendo)

I’m pretty sure tails was a guy in the cartoon series, just with an overly feminine voice. Kinda like megaman in MM8. They even refer to him as ‘he’. Hell, I’m positive he was a he in the comic series, and the comic series was practically parrallel to one of the series.

Anyway, I just looked in every resource I had, and in all the comic books, tails has been male (from one of the comic books I owned at age 9). As many of you have said, in the games, he was male (Sonic 2 manual, thanks to my cousin). I never saw the TV show, and don’t own any of it to see, so I had to go by internet search. Most places appear to think he’s male, however, several think he’s female, and one admitted that they had no idea in hell what he was.
In other words, in every source I can find, Tails is indeed a man… er… boy… er… fox-thing.
Also, according to semi-reliable information, he was originally going to be named ‘Powers’ instead of Prower. Apparently, Sega realized it was not only a horrible name, but also an even wrose name for a side-kick. Remember that I said semi-reliable, I’m not at all sure if this is true, it’s just funny as hell, I think.
I know that was a joke, but to be fair, Seraphim Ephyon is the only person to question Tails’ gender. So, I wouldn’t use the word “most” in this situation. Although I’ll agree that most may not be informed enough to be arguing, the way everybody brought up Sally, but forgot about Amy!
It would be an epic battle that would last for days, and would end with both mighty warriors killing each other with the final blow as Amy and Peach weeped. Mario. I started my gaming career with Mario in 1989. [/old fogey] Who the hell is this Sonic Character and what the sweet merciful fuck is he doing on the NINTENDO GameCube?
Where else would they put him? When Sega stopped making consoles they had to send Sonic somewhere. I’ve only ever played Sonic 2 and never a Mario game, so my faith would lie with Sonic beating Mario. Sonic has a good chance of collecting at least one ring if he’s hit, while Mario has to go searching for power mushrooms and such. Plus, Sonic can jump out of the way or on top of Mario to hurt him, or try to ram him. While Mario can only jump to injure unless he’s had some other power thing.
I voted sonic.
However, if this was “which character has consistently better games” I would vote for Mario, because he has withstood the conversion to 3D, and in fact, Mario 3D games are just as good, if not better, than their 2D counterparts. I cannot say the same thing for sonic, because during his conversion to 3D, he lost all sense of speed and free-form-gameplay, which was what the 2D Sonics were all about.
But Sonic is still better than mario because the 2D sonics rock so hard.
Maybe he had a girly voice in the cartoon because he was only 10-12 (I think) and his testicles hadn’t descended into adulthood yet? 
I don’t think the 3D Sonics lost all sense of speed (when you’re playing as Sonic anyway). And I never thought Sonic was about “free-form-gameplay”. The biggest gripes I have with the 3D Sonics (I haven’t played Sonic Heroes yet) are the alternate gameplay styles (ie playing as characters that aren’t Sonic or Shadow… who wants to play as a slow robot that shoots lasers in a Sonic game?), the fact that the camera absolutely SUCKS, and that I sometimes get nauseous (which is mostly a result of the speed and sucky camera).
I will say that Mario’s conversion to 3D was much smoother than Sonic’s, though. Mario 64 is easily the best 3D platformer ever, if you ask me.
Were the Dreamcast Sonic games ever ported to another system? I’ve got Sonic 1-3, and Sonic 3D for Genesis, but I want some 3D Sonic fun.
I have to favor the Communist plumber. He introduced me to full fledged platforming.

Sally and the “gang” were all featured in Sonic Spinball. Thus arent just part of the side story ala Comics and TV Shows… Hell, Bunny, Alfanz (the french fox, whatever his name was) and thet purple walrus mechanic… They were all in it!
That is. and will for sometime be, the most awesome thing I have ever heard on a forum.
As for Hiryuu, yes, but the fact that the sonic team all had to reassure each other the gender and look in a game manual was kind of funny, even if it didn’t really prove anything.
