I mean, seriously, for most people in the 14-30 year old age group, I don’t imagine that the more interesting portions of their lives consist of repetetive pseudo-combat. I’m not saying that I can’t enjoy normal RPGs (obviously, I wouldn’t be here otherwise), but I was wondering if anyone could think of any RPGs that were particularly… I don’t know, substantiative?
Wait. What are you asking?
<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> Try Deus Ex.
Good old dice-on-the-table RPG’s (unless your GM is a combat/strategy maniac), most RPG’s that are not blockbusters.
You could go to the HOTU and look for some old RPG’s there. Some are freeware and relatively small so you might even start a collection in your HD. Aleshar: World of Ice is quite substantiative, though the graphical part is not its best and most people get lost fairly easily in it. It’s an old DOS game, so I dunno if it’ll run OK in XP.
You should try a Pen & Paper RPG. It does something as it insane as require you to use your brain and imagination, that’s pretty unique in this day and age.
Ren and Nulani: I’m asking about computer/console RPGs. If I was looking for classical RPGs, I’d simply go to the RP forum.
Ren: Thanks for the tip about the-underdogs.
Nulani: Sometimes I wonder if you even pay attention to my questions when you answer them.
…guh? I took five minutes to understand your post and then get the reference from thread title to your post o_O
Anyways, catually now I wanted to bring you 34857 exampes now of RPGs who dont fit into your sheme, but I just realized I can’t. o.o" Although, and RPG without fights, just running from quest to quest without smashing anything and solving puzzles would be kinda dry.
(There are some RPGs made with rpgmaker though that are quite fun and vary from the normal letsslaythatbigbadguyandsmashhishead-sheme, look around in the communitys.)
And I just remembered that one of my favorite RPGs doesn’t involve any fighting at all, Longest Journey for the PC. It kicks ass. Now probably half of RPGC will jump at my throat and say “thats not and RPG you dont have fights you dont have monsters and equipment”, I still say it’s one. And I love it. So bite me.
I hate to say it, DT, but it isn’t. Its an adventure game. :\
No, Cyber. RP stands for roleplay, not ‘fightplay’. If there is roleplaying, even without a fight, then it’s RPG.
A good RPG with little action but lots of substance, although not for those underaged, is True Love. There are no actionful fights, all you have to do is gather the items that match the personality of the girl you choose and behave in a way that catches her attention. It means being a nerd to catch up with the president of the student council, becoming a hunk to date the leader of the gymnastics team and so on. If you are a complete ass you’ll end up alone.
edit: I can’t wait to see the game you were making, DT. When are you going to let us play it?

Yeah. I know that. That specific game though:
its an adventure game.

Normally I’d say bite me, but you’re the sandwich, so I’ll bite YOU! AHHAHAHA! bites roun
And Ren, I’m currently remaking it with some help from Shihayazad (Maboroshi) cause I suck at mapping. It’s a smashthebigbadguy though, just not as serious as most RPGs. I’ll post some screens from the old demo if you like.
Giving out pics before releasing stuff shown in them is teasing.
Post them.
'k, but not in this thread, that’s too off topic. Besides the screens are from the old demo :o Oh whatever.
Sorry Ivan & Mods, carry on please.
Aren’t you a bit old to be playing video games?
There aren’t many games NOT targeted for angst ridden, sexless teenagers. Hate to break that to you.
Play something in a langauge you don’t understand; make up your own plot.
:kissy:

I tried that with ToP before the translation patch came out. It was hell, getting stuck for 2-3 hours = not fun, especially when what you were supposed to do all the time you were wndering was right infron of your face.

I did that with un subbed episodes of Sailor Moon back in the day…
Do it with that Live a Live game, since even with a translation you don’t know what the hell is going on, or what to do next.
If your looking for an RPG without fighting, I guess any Sim City would be kinda like that, you PLAY the ROLE of a mayor in a GAME.
Hmmm. ACtually under those cirumstances, all games would be a rold playing game. At least videogames, most if not all.
After all, you play a rold. The differences between FF7 and Contra though…

I said nannies, and not teenagers.

There are a lot of differences between a “free” roleplay, and a game of DnD, or another “dice-on-the-table” RP
