RPG pronounciations and stuff!

I’ll go to my grave pronouncing it “Mar-lee”, because if I just say “Marl”, it makes me think of the Nippon Ichi series.

Marle would definitely be pronounced rhyming with Carl by the Japanese pronounciation, but I’m curious about the English way. Even before I knew about the Japanese pronounciation I pronounced it Marl. To be honest, I don’t get how the ‘ee’ sound is used… For me, there’d have to be an “ee”, “ey”, “y”, “i” or something like that to get the ‘ee’ sound. On the other hand, I can’t even explain my way as a “rule” in my head, because there are lots of times when a singular ‘e’ gets pronounced ‘ee’ (he, she, me, we). I can’t say: after two consonants it’s silent, because of ‘she’. All of those examples rule out silent 'e’s at the end of words…

On an interesting note, I was trying to think of similar words to try and figure out how it would be officially pronounced. I couldn’t think of any that ended ‘-(vowel)rle’ and was thumbing randomly through my dictionary. It occured to me, what are the chances of “marle” being in there? So I looked it up.

Sadly it wasn’t there, but “marl” was. It doesn’t have any bearing on the English pronounciation, as the disputed vowel is missing, but as it’s the official romanization of the Japanese, here’s what my dictionary said:

Darn. So close yet so far… Maybe early French lessons in school influenced me…

Magus is “may-guhss” according to my dictionary. I find it funny because when I was a kid, I pronounced it “mah-gus”, then I was told it was “may-jus” and I was eventually convinced and have called him that since. Now that I actually bothered to double-check, it’s something in-between…

If you use Latin pronunciation (since it’ s Latin) it should be:
Ma: mah (like must or mama)
gus: goose (the double o should be a short sound)
If it was supposed to be like “magnum” when you change pron. every language, then it should be May-gas.
>>NOT TO MAKE PEOPLE MISUNDERSTAND ME AGAIN: I’ m not bashing anyone’ s opinions, this is my humble opinion.
I’ m glad I can help, see ya.

Magus was a Latin word, sure, but it’s gotten roped into the English language like thousands of other words. For example, the name Jacob was originally “Yah-kov”. Pronunciation changes when languages do.

Are you implying that Yakov Smirnoff is a Jacob?

Is he the owner/distiller/whatever of Smirnoff Vodka?
Anyway… yes, every Jacob is a Yakov and vice versa.

“In Soviet Russia, Vodka drinks you!”

He was the comedian that made those jokes all the time.

In America, you change languages. In Soviet Russia, languages change YOU!

I’ve got a friend named Ayla and she pronounces her name Aye (Like the canadians say) - luh (Ryhmes with uh)

Ys = Eees?

Lol. Gamer, I love you “Razama!”

Ys - ‘whys’ or ‘wise’

Magus is just that, MAG (MAGazine) US (us, or gUS). Comes from the word Magi, meaning a sorceror/philosopher/magician/priest/astrologer.

YS IS PRONOUNCED “EEES!!!” GRAAAAAAHHH! ME CRUSH!!!

Sorry. I just really hate people mispronouncing that. It’s pronounced “Ees,” like the word “ease” with a slightly stronger “s” sound at the end. It was a real place (well, a real legend anyway), [supposedly] in modern day France. It was spelled “Is” in Briton.

“Turn left at light. In Soviet Russia, car drives you!”

Playing Ys 6 now.
The series may be pronounced “ease”, but it certainly doesn’t play like it… :hyperven:
Played NES fan translation of 1 up until that stupid cave where you can’t see crap and if an enemy touches you, you have like .008 seconds to react before you’re dead.
I remember the SNES port of Ys3 also being similarly evil. Even with maxed out stuff, you still die in like 2-3 hits in Ballacetine? Castle.
Also, what’s the deal with the dash jump in Ys 6 anyways? I’ve been trying forever to do it, but I can’t pull it off. Passed up a couple chests in the bonus? dungeons (Trials of Alma) because I got tired of trying.

The dash jump in Ys 6 is harder than hell. Here’s basically how I was able to pull it off;

Press a direction, then, as soon as you let go of the direction, press attack and jump (X and Square) at roughly the same time, pressing attack (Square) a millisecond earlier than jump (X). If you think it’s hard, it was about 10x harder on PC… O_O

As for Ys I, you should play the PC Ys Eternal or the TG16 Ys Book I & II. They were both better than the NES version, both are translated (one officially, the other not-so-much), and have more gradual difficulty curves.
