RPG pronounciations and stuff!

I can’t believe nobody covered Geno yet. (Jee-no, as far as I can tell.) As for the rest that haven’t been covered as I’m typing this: I always pronounced Ayla as in “Ey-la,” kinda like the name Kayla without the K. I’ve heard Giygas pronounced both ways mentioned, so I’m not really sure what the correct way is, although I’ve grown accustomed to saying “Gigas.”

As for chocobo, I think it’s just best to rely on the in-game voices (FFX, FFX-2) to give us the proper pronounciation, “CHO-ko-bo.”

EDIT: Oh yeah, my brother always pronounced Auron like “or-ron,” rhyming with moron. Made me giggle on the inside.

EDIT 2: Oh yeah again, I always pronounced Ys as “Why-ess.” I thought they were just supposed to be Y and S. :stuck_out_tongue: Then again I never played any of those games. The more you know…

Geno and Ayla are more somewhat common names, so people shouldn’t have trouble pronouncing them…

Also…

Punches 984 in the throat for mispronouncing Ys

But don’t feel too bad, I used to pronounce it that way too. =(

Magus Ma-gus
Celes Se-less
Opera O-per-a
Lucca Loo-ka
Ayla A-la
Tyr Teer
Schalla Skal-la
Dekar Dek-ar
Geno Gee-no
Ramza Ram-za
Delita De-lee-ta
That’s how I 've always pronounced them.

Yeah but with the way you’re spelling them I can’t make heads or tails of how you’re pronouncing them. Like Magus. Is the gus like gus (pus?) or GUS (juice?) Same with Dekar. Are you sounding it out like Dee or Day?

Bow (Breath of Fire II)

Bow? (The weapon that Bow uses)
Bow? (The sound that a dog makes, bow-wow)

I always thought Bow (The weapon that Bow uses) cuz it’s kinda like Bo, from BoF I, especially considering the re-using of Ryu and Nina.

That’s deep. Makes me think. But you didn’t consider bow, as in bend over. Maybe it’s pronounced like that.

That’s pronounced the same way as “bow” in “bow-wow”…

That was my incredibly lame joke. Altogether now let’s laugh…runs away in embarrassment

Indeed so. He even says, “What the…? Hey, I’m a GUY!” when Frog confronts him in Chrono Trigger.

Here are a few of my interpretations.

SWEE-ko-den.

Yeah, I’d say the same.

MAG-us, I think.

CEL-ess.

LU-ka.

This is a Nordic name. I’m not sure, but I believe it’s pronounced Tür (or Tuer). The ‘e’ or the umlauts soften the ‘u’ sound.

I always thought it was SHA-la.

My guess is, similar to “Ryu,” and pronounced as one syllable.

I never really cared what an “offical” pronounciation was. I just sound something out and stick with it. That being said, here’s what I say:

Suikoden. Soo-whee-koh-din?

“Sue-ko-den”

Sasarai. Sah-sar-rye?

“Sah-sar-rye”

Magus. May-gus? My boyfriend vehemently insists that it is Mage-us.

“May-gus”

Celes. Cell-less (Celeste)? Or Cellis?

“Cell-eeze”

Opera. Oh-pra? Or Opera?

“Op-er-a”

Lucca. Loo-ka? Luce-sa?

“Luke-ah”

Tyr. Tear? Tir?

“Tear”

Schala. Skall-lah? Shal-lah? Shoal-lah?

“Shal-lah”

Ayla. Aye-lah? Eh-lah?

“Aye-lah”

Giygas. Gig-us? Gy-gus?

Not sure, I would guess “Guy-gus”

Dekar. Dee-kar? Dick-ar?

“Deck-car”

Geno. Gee-noh? Ghee-noh?

“Gee-no”

Ramza. Ram-za? Rom-za?

“Ram-za”

Delita. Dell-it-ah? De-leet-ta?

“Dell-eat-ah”

Riou. ???

“Ryu”=“Ree-oo”

It’s definitely “CHO-ko-bo”.

I’ve heard someone pronounce Auron a-RON instead of Or-un

That’s because in the original Japanese, it’s actually closer to that. When I saw it written I never actually thought characters would be saying “Oh-rin”.
I always think of Ayla as “Ai-lah” (first syllable rhymes with my) but I know it’s really supposed to be “Ei-lah” (first syllable rhymes with ray) based on the Japanese.
Schala is “SHA-lah”.

Suikoden. Soo-ee-koh-den

Sasarai. Sah-sar-eye

Magus. Ma (like MUst) -goos

Celes. Ce-less (1 s, actually)

Opera. Oh-pe (like PEst) -ra

Lucca. Loo-kka

Tyr. Tear

Schala. I think its shal-a, even if scala (skull-a, 1 l) means ladder

Ayla. Eye-lah

Giygas. Gee-gus (u like Up)

Dekar. De (e like dAy)-car

Geno. Ge (like GEnder)-naw

Ramza. Ram-za (A’s like Up)

Delita. Deh-lit-ah

Riou. ree-oo

Phew, that’ s the last one. You know, I’ m Italian and many names listed here use Latin pronuntiation, in other words you read them as you write them (like Lucca, Gigas, Opera, Magus, et cetera) so I’ m 99% sure about them. Hope I’ m correct!

But which way to say 984? Nine Eight Four? or Nine Hundered and Eighty four?

Actually, his real name is Boche (pronounced “bow (and arrow)-sh)”
Katt is really Rimpoo. (rihm-pu)
And Jean is Tapeta (ta-pay-tah)

Not sure why they changed Boche to Bow. Maybe space reasons, but how come not Bosh?
Rimpoo? Maybe it sounded suggestive?
Tapeta? Guess they didn’t want to call him Tape?
I don’t recall offhand, but think the other names were all correct. Not enough time to fire up the SFC cart and check…

I don’t care about the Japanese names since I only speak english. The english translation names are more interesting to me anyway.

The 984 demands that 984 be pronounced nine eight four. Eight syllables is just overkill, although The 984 would be worth every single one.

Suikoden: ‘swi-koa-den’; I pronounce ui as a diphthong.

Sasarai: ‘sah-sar-rye’

Magus: ‘mah-guss’; a pronunciation similar to Latin magus, from which the word comes.

Celes: ‘cee-leez’; like Ceres, but with an l.

Opera: Like the English word ‘opera’.

Lucca: ‘luh-ka’, as it is pronounced in Italian, with a short u.

Tyr: I have always pronounced it like ‘tear’.

Schala: ‘sha-lah’

Ayla: ‘eye-lah’

Giygas: Unsure. I have found myself pronoucing it ‘guy-gas’, but that is probably wrong. I do not pronounce it like Latin gigas/Greek gígas, though.

Dekar: ‘deck-car’

Geno: ‘jee-no’

Ramza: ‘ram-zah’

Delita: ‘de-lee-tah’

Riou: ‘ree-you’, possibly with the r rolled as in French.

Just out of curiosity, how do others pronounce ‘Jecht’? The game pronounces it ‘jekt’, but I naturally want to give it a German pronunciation: ‘yecht’, with the ch as in German ich.

Flea is a guy. First of all, he says he’s a guy, secondly, the Chrono Cross gender indicator says that he’s male. The cleavage in the official art can be explained by remembering that Flea is a shapeshifter.

Magus is “may-guhss” according to my dictionary. I find it funny because when I was a kid, I pronounced it “mah-gus”, then I was told it was “may-jus” and I was eventually convinced and have called him that since. Now that I actually bothered to double-check, it’s something in-between… :fungah:

As for how I pronounce the rest of the names on the list…

Suikoden= soo-ee-koh-den, with the soo-ee run together
Sasarai= sah-sah-rai (with rai rhyming with eye)
Celes= seh-less
Opera= op-er-ah
Lucca= loo-kah
Schala= shah-lah
Ayla= ay-lah (with the ay rhyming with may)
Ramza= rahm-zah
Delita= deh-leet-ah
Riou= ree-oh
(I skipped names I’ve never really thought about before.)

How do people pronounce Marle? I’ve always rhymed it with “Carl”, but I’ve heard a lot of people pronounce it Mar-lee…

I also pronounced it Mar-Lee, but I’m thinking (again basing on the Japanese spelling) that it rhymes with Carl. (or you could just call her Nadia and be done with it that way, too) :biggrin:
