I think the last time they went all the way was before it was called the World Series and people didn’t care about it.
Cubs were last in the World Series in 1949. That was the year the Curse of the Billy Goat started.
However, they haven’t won it since 1908. At that time, it was the World Series, but there were no playoffs. Teams got into the World Series by having the best record in their league, and the Cubs had one of the best damn records ever, even for modern teams.
