Obscure Games

Let’s all talk about the most enjoyable obscure games we’ve ever played! I have a few I’d like to mention.

Panic Resturaunt
I never heard of this until I saw it on an NES ROM list, and curiosity got the better of me. You play as a little chef dude, who hits killer food with a frying pan. Its accualy not bad, as far as NES side-scrollers go.

Mappy-Land
Yet another good ol’ sidescroller for the NES. You play as a mouse gathering gifts for his girlfriend. It accualy delivers a surpising amount of good gameplay, and it’s an old favorate of mine.

Magmax
An R-Type-esque shooter for the NES. You play as a little ship that can become a Transformers-esque robot by collecting parts that just happen to be lying around. A pretty good game of it’s kind. (Wow, I just used -esque twice in one sentance. :))

Dexterity
Another old favorate of mine for the Gameboy. I’m not really sure what genre this falls under. You play as a kid whose goal in life is to flip tiles over, while insects, ghosts, snowmen and the like try to flip them back. Stupid as it sounds, this one is LOADS of fun.

Spud’s Adventure
A pseudo-adventure game for Gameboy. You play as Spud the potato, and you must climb a tower to rescue Princess Tomato. Along the way, you recruit a few other vegitables whitch you can also play as. Also suprisingly fun.

It would be highly reccomended to grab yourself an emulator and give any one of these games a try.
Can anyone else think of some obscure games that they enjoyed?

oh god I remember Mappy. I was able to speak/read english at the time, so I had no idea what the game was about til now. Haw.

Yeah, I played a bunch of those games. See my Spring Break NES ROM Review. Harrrrr

Panic Restaurant was decent for its time. I remember a friend of mine having it.

Spud’s Adventure sounds an awful lot like Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom for the NES, right down to the adventure qualities. I didn’t like PT (or any adventure for the NES except the original Deja Vu).

Haven’t played the others (though I’ve heard of Mappyland).

As for my obscure games of fun list…

-I got an awful lot of fun out of the original Rocket Knight Adventures for Genesis. A decent sidescroller.

-I still play Biker Mice from Mars (SNES) once in a while. The license was pretty obscure to begin with, but it’s not bad.

Super Turrican 1 and 2 for the SNES (not the NES games, they sucked). Those things rocked, from great gameplay to an awesome soundtrack.

Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster is the SHIT, y0! I love dem games!

I played a little bit of Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, and let me tell you, Spud’s Adventure is NOTHING like it. It’s probobly a coincidence that the princess is a Tomato.

Oh, and this bears repeating: EVERYONE should try Dexterity.

Damn foo, I rented Mappyland once when I was a kid, and I was just thinking about it today for some reason.

Speaking of obscure old games people should play, what about Wasteland?

What console? I’ll check around.

PC. It’s one of those really old crpgs with horrible graphics, I think home of the underdogs has it.

Heh, I remember Mappy and Magmax…I think I played Magmax too much (rented it a couple of times) sometimes.

From the sounds of them, I think I’m quite lucky not to have been into games back then!

Although I have heard of worse sound titles, so maybe there not that bad, but I don’t really care, it was before my time!

Ehhh Traysia was fun. Little known RPG, although the battle ssytem was slightly annoying (Ultima 4 NES-esque) and slightly buggy.

The ending had me depressed for three days.

I would spend a whole day naming old games I like, so I’ll cite just the oldest: Earth Scorcher (old DOS plataform).

Wheel of Time to the PC (released 1999). BEST FPS EVER!!!

Oh, and Turrican 2 to Amiga. X, if you thought the ST games had great music and gameplay, wait 'til you play the real ones…

PC: Dungeons of the Unforgiven by moraffware. Many mages died to my poor English Skills.

NES: Hundreds of hours were poured into Gremlins 2 and Rygar, my first NES games. Not to mention Sidepocket, a pool game, and Donkey Kong!

SNES: Secret of Evermore. Need I say more?

Flippin’ through NES…

Micky Mousecapade
In this Disney game, you have to get through puzzles and beat bosses to get to what’s her face… I forget her name.

Arkista’s Ring
Not sure if that’s the correct spelling, but this is quite the gem. Not sure of the plot, but it’s an early hack ‘n’ slash/adventure type of game.

The Little Mermaid
I remmber liking this game. I’m not sure exactly what you’re shooting for here (I never beat it (or, if I did, I don’t remember it)), but you play the LM and use bubbles (which you can upgrade) to defeat enemies and bosses.

Anticipation
This game is ADDICTING. I completely forget what it’s about, but if I ever get my NES to work again, I’ll play it. Give it a try if you can.

Tom & Jerry
Ahhhhhh… This is an ev0l game. I never could beat it. You’re Jerry and you run through several stages, each with Tom as the boss at each level’s end. It’s damned hard.

Caeser’s Palace
It’s like a normal casino for free. Not that great.

Yoshi’s Cookie
Tetris rip-off. I still like it.

Ironsword
An adventure/sidescoller (of sorts). I forget the rest. Not too bad, though.

The Adventures of Rock and Bullwinkle and Friends
Ooooooooooh boy. I do love this game. You are (duh) Rocky and Bullwinkle, and you try to foil the evil peoplez with the help of the Mounties and trying to save the damsel.

And if these aren’t obscure, they are to the people that live around here. I’m the only person that I know of that’s even heard of these games.

All of my favorite obscure games are on the PC. There’s Football Fanatic, Rockstar, I know some people have heard of Commander Keen, and there’s lots more.

Ah, some good memories. Mickey Mousecapade was pretty darn good for its time, especially if you took the time to find Minnie’s weapon so she wasn’t just a pit-jumping-into annoying character.

As can be expected by Capcom, The Little Mermaid had excellent play design. The only problem was that it was amazingly easy to beat.

And Yoshi’s Cookie… bah, Tetris Attack did it much better.

Well, YC was for NES, so it’s somewhat understandable. And TA r0x0rz.
