*Great* Movies

The title of the thread is “Great movies” and not “What are your favorite movies?” [/b]

If Sorc wanted to know “great” movies he should have just looked up the afi list or something and wouldn’t have asked us. Sure some movies don’t have everything required for a great movie, but for me at least it doesn’t have to be “great” to be enjoyable.

Amadeus

Man without a Past

Cinema Paradiso

Bagdad Cafe

Brazil

Jason and the Argonauts

Seven Samurai

El Mariachi

Dr. Zhivago

The Sheik (with Valentino)

Lawrence of Arabia (with Omar Sharif)

Breaking Away

is it possible for you to give us stronger parameters Sorcerer? I could go on for a long while, but I think having such a glut of suggestions would do your search more harm than good.

Weird Science and Brazil are awesome movies, I forgot about them.

So you’re acknowledging that most of the movies in this thread aren’t “great”, which is what the thread asks for in the title? I just can’t see anybody getting a “wow” feeling or feeling as though their life has been changed by watching most of these movies.

Entertaining is one thing- great is another. Not that there’s anything wrong with just being entertaining. Sometimes it’s nice, but entertaining’s not incredible.

Why do you think we have a Gaming Help forum instead of a big sign that says Go to GameFAQs (or some other site)? Because maybe people want to ask other people questions? Sorc wanted to ask what people thought GREAT movies are, not pretty good movies you kinda like. If a movie is enjoyable but not great, it doesn’t belong in this topic.

for the uninformed, Alice and Sohee agree about EVERYTHING :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s cause she’s cuddly.

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/subsites/twistedrpg/images/hero/rirse.gif”> kidnaps Sohee and Alice from the thread, hugging them both Anyway, most of my picks were good movies from my collection or stuff I seen, but enjoy greatly. There are other movies I own taht are not mention, for they are great entertainment, but not movies that stand the test of time. Of course someone might disagree about that remark toward something like Big Trouble in Little China, which is a great movie indeen.

It is quite okay, “Alice” and “Sohee”, for all the films I listed are great. I have exceptional taste.

Not only that, but I’m modest, too. :kissy:

Everything I named is great and, moreover, widely regarded as classics of the cinematic medium.

I stand by all of them.

For I too am imbued with incredibly good taste in film.

The movies I put are great. What’s wrong with them?:too bad;

My three top movies:
[ul]
[li]Top Gun
[/li][li]10 Things I Hate About You
[/li][li]Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
[/li][/ul]

But that’s just me.

I don’t have a favorite movie or movie i thought was great so i can’t decide, plus people can make their own decisions about my list. I didnt say that most of the movies that have been listed werent great at all, don’t put words in my mouth. “I just can’t see anybody getting a “wow” feeling or feeling as though their life has been changed by watching most of these movies.” I feel that exact way about most any movie, so making a great movie list is difficult .Though seeing will ferrells ass in old school will give me nightmares i know it. I couldnt possibly watch anymore of that movie past that. High fidelity was boring. Please no one comment how i’m trashing on movies, its just my opinion, what the hell do you care.

Excuse me for giving out of a list, sorry i’m not an expert or whatever of “great” movies. It usually ends up i don’t end up liking some of the movies people think are great. Or simply i end up seeing the movie too much which gets on my nerves.

You’re obviously referring to the movies in this thread unless it’s a totally irrelevant comment.

And Kaiser, CC, and Nagumo listed great movies.

I pretty much agree with everything Dai’s said. I’m not sure if this thread was made before or after someone said “lozl u think RotK is teh best then u havnt see vry many movies,” but most of the stuff listed here is pretty shitty, to be blunt. I mean, come on now. Equillibrium is good, Empire Strikes Back is good, the stuff Nagumo mentioned is good, but like, Apollo 13? Scarface? Terminator? BATMAN? For crying out loud, don’t list shit like that in a great movies thread. Maybe in a classics movies thread, but not great. Please.

If anyone wants a really great movie, go watch Osamu Tezuka’s Metropolis.

Anyone wanna write an essay on the meaning of the phrase ‘Great movie’? Any takers?

Because I think ‘classic’ and ‘great’ can be pretty much so interchangable, depending on the opinion of the viewer. ‘Gone with the Wind’ is considered a classic movie, but it could also be considered a ‘great movie’.

I think you’re the last person to have any say in what great movies are, Mr.I’mturningJapanese. :stuck_out_tongue:

I must add the film “Amelie” to the list. Get the subbed not the dubbed verison. Damned good film- French… really sweet. Watching it right now.

Ruin all my fun why don’t you! ;; ;; ;_;

I was actually pretty hesitant to say Metropolis actually, because it’s Anime, and it’s kinda in a whole different league. But Metropolis really is one of the best movies I’ve seen, regardless of movie style.

I can’t think of very many good live action movies that haven’t been listed though. I guess I’ll just vouch for Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

(And considering what other people have listed, I don’t think anyone’s in a position to be EXCLUDED from having a say in what great movies are :stuck_out_tongue: Most of the stuff listed is crap :P)
