*Great* Movies

I haven’t seen Scarface, but Apollo 13 is, what I would consider, a great movie. It’s got very compelling acting, a moving storyline and a portrays a meaningful event in our history. Terminator and Batman, movies I’ve seen, I wouldn’t classify as movies that anyone has to see, mainly because they are designed to appeal to a specific audience, and that they aren’t all that great anyway.

Merlin: Well, I’ve left it open ended because I want to open up to different movies. I like my movies like I like my music, diverse. I watch everything from hardcore porn to romantic comedies, so by giving stronger parameters I’m only limiting myself.

Hades: I’ve never really taken much of what you’ve said seriously (ever), and going into this I didn’t expect to take any of what you’ve said seriously now either. This thread isn’t about belittling other people’s choices in movies, and by doing so you only exemplify the narcissistic wannabe-know it all characteristics that make you who you are. Just list your movies and move along, don’t try to be cool by saying that other peoples choices of movies suck, because I could go on forever with a long winded essay about how terrible anime is. But do I? No. Why? Because a) it doesn’t matter that much and b) who cares if you like anime or scarface?

The first Terminator I wouldn’t say is a must see or a great movie. It is entertaining yes, but Terminator 2 is pretty good. It has some nice messages and is acted pretty well and it flows well too. Such as Arnold’s Terminator saying "It is in your nature to destroy yourselves’ after John ask “We’re not gonna make it, are we?” is extremely moving to me anyway. Plus the movie has many other elements. However, I could see someone saying it isn’t a great movie.

And Kaiser, CC, and Nagumo listed great movies. [/b]
Yes it was an irrelevant comment. I was thinking some movies i like might not have much of music or are considered kid movies are or mostly action or didn’t have much of a plot, etcera. Also was considering what movies would be something like LOTR series, something hyped to be great and well the music, scale, locations; something Oscar worthy. LotR series is all right, the second one was a little long drawn out in places i thought out, but all right.
I feel that some of the movies Kaiser and Cybercompost arent my favorites or great movies, but that is just my opinion nor have i seen some that were listed. I haven’t seen what Nagumo listed though.

I wouldn’t have been able to say much else then List your great movies Hades, and wait for us to crap on them too.

Once again, you’ve completely failed to capture my character in words. YOU’RE the one not taking ME seriously? I find that ironic and insulting to the highest degree, excuse me while I go CRY. I think you should listen to Dai, and ASK yourself what you should be listing here. You wanted to make a thread on Truly great movies. I’m sorry, but Terminator and Scarface are just shit that 1337 highschool kids think is badass. They are not great movies. They’re on the level of American Pie and Freddy vs. Jason, which I wouldn’t be surprised if someone already mentioned.

I’m not trying to belittle your movies, because I don’t have to. They already suck, I’m just preaching their suckitude. Sorry to have to put it in such blunt terms, but you’re not bright enough to pick up on subtleties. You have the worst judgement of anyone I’ve ever seen ever. Now, next time you make a thread like this, please don’t contradict yourself by listing shit on a list that’s supposed to be about GOOD stuff. Thanks.

And by the way, my comments aren’t personal attacks on anyone (except the guy who makes me ashamed to be human (that’s you)). Some people listed actual great movies like Holy Grail almost right beside movies that don’t have a place on such a list as this one. I just want them to really consider what they’re putting on here. And believe me, I’ve left a lot of room for opinion as a factor. Certain movies are shit beyond opinion though.

I can’t believe I forget the only sci-fi movie to change my outlook on life: Gattaca. This film seriously made me feel scared for the future as it could so easily come true and in ways, already is.

Oh yes, I forgot.

eXistenZ by Cronenberg. It should at least be of a little interest to people who enjoy video games. It kicks the Matrix’s ass in similar territory (not that it’s hard to kick the Matrix’s ass, no offense meant to those who enjoy it =p).

Yeah Sorc, I can’t believe that you didn’t know Hades is all wise and has the best taste. He is the ultimate judge on what a great movie. It doesn’t matter what anybody says is a great movie besides him.

Here’s an idea: why don’t we stop criticizing each other and instead return to the original subject: Great movies? :ah-ha!:

By rereading this thread, I noticed that Sorc also said he’d enjoy comedies, too. So, I think I’ll suggest a few.

Of course, there’s all kinds of comedy, and I have no idea what Sorc (or the rest of you, this thread isn’t just for him) find funny, so I’ll give examples of different types.

There’s the “pratfall” type of comedy, where the humor is basically about the characters falling over themselves all the time. The PINK PANTHER movies are a classic of that type (and apropos since their maker, Blake Edwards, just won the Lifetime Achievement Oscar.)

Then there’s the “live-action cartoon” movies where reality is just one gag after another. The AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN movies fit here.

There’s the “idiot” type of movie, where the humor depends on the main character being, well, an idiot. DUMB AND DUMBER is of course an example.

There’s the Gross-out comedies, where the humor is in being, well, tasteless. ANIMAL HOUSE comes to mind.

There’s the humor movie that actually has a social message in it. LIAR LIAR, I found, was not only very funny, but it had a few stinging truths about our society’s need for lies.

And there’s the “faulty logic” type of comedy, where the main character is NOT an idiot but somehow comes to an absurd conclusion- and spends the rest of the movie trying to make it work. MRS. DOUBTFIRE is definitely the type!

There ARE other types of comedies (like the Romantic Comedy, or the Tragic Comedy) but I can’t think of more examples right now. I’m sure others can, thought.

And the Irony behind this is that Info’s trying to be omniscient in judging my personality   Don’t presume to know what I’m thinking, Info. I never claimed to be the ultimate judge on anything. It just doesn’t take a genius to know that some of what was listed here doesn’t belong, and fuck, if I made a “great” anything thread I wouldn’t want people to talk about crap in it unless they were insulting it.

And here’s a tip, next time you’re trying to be witty, use more :P’s and :D’s. They do wonders on your charisma.

Jesus christ. Hades, people do have opinions on this sort of stuff, but there’s NO need for you to act like a complete ass about it. You went way overboard here, and yes, it’s flaming and trolling to do what you did.

Oh, and you missed what Dai was saying too.
