So far, I am really enjoying the game. The graphics are beautiful (something I’ve wanted in Grandia 1&2), and it really takes advantage of the PS2 capabilities. The story is neat and interesting, even though it’s pretty simple.
Going around the overworld in a plane is really fucking awesome. Going up in the clouds was really cool. The music at that point, and throughout the game, are breathtaking. Although they are not as good as Grandia 1 or 2, they are still incredibly amazing.
The battles are where it shines, though. You have the basic Critical, Combo, Defend, Item, and Flee, but they added a seperate menu for both Special and Magic. Another new thing is that Defend allows you to move to another spot to avoid attack. Specials are acquired by performing regular attacks a certain number of times. So the more you Combo or Critical, the more Specials you can acquire. Specials inthemselves also become more powerful as you use them.
Magic/Passive abilities are junctioned to a person similar to materia, but you gain more slots as you level up/gain experience/it’s random (:P). It’s much better than the “magic are excluded to each mana egg” jazz they had in the second Grandia. However, they still have the mana eggs. Thing is, they aren’t as important. They boost up magic considerably, but are not a necessity. You can fuse mana eggs together to combine effects.
Back to the battle system, they put in an “aerial combo” thing, where if you do magic/specials/critical hits, sometimes the enemy is flung into the air, and if another party member hits them with a critical or combo in that time, it does a special move that is pretty powerful. I really enjoyed this aspect of battles 'cause it added a little risk/luck business.
They also have summons. I know, I know, they aren’t actual summons, just an orb containing a guardians powers; which can be summoned at your pleasing every once in a while. I haven’t fully gotten how to reuse it, as I used it once, and like 10 battles later I still can’t use it.
I am really enjoying this game, much more than the first or second. I’ll buy Radiata Stories this upcoming weekend to compare. I have some questions below;
-
Whatever happened to Rotts? He goes to the mainland supposedly, but I haven’t caught up with him even after 10 hours of gaming.
-
Do I get Miranda and Alonso back? I thought they were both kickass, especially Miranda.
-
Who are the party members? This game is kind of like FF4, where each party member is chosen for you, so you can’t switch or anything. So far I have [STRIKE]Fayt[/STRIKE] Yuki, Alfina, Ulf, and Dahna.
-
How long is the game? I’ve clocked 12 hours, and just at the battle where Yoat is.
About question 4, I’m having difficulties with the battle where Yoat is. It’s against some girl with a scythe and that blue-armored dude. I’m level 16 for Yuki, 16 for Alfina, 16 for Ulf, and 17 for Dahna, and I can’t seem to beat them. I find it stupid that they’re weapons have like 6000hp. >: (
Really good game, I reccomend it.
