Final Fantasy XI - Tomorrow

My friend is drooling like a stupid baby over this game and I can’t seem to realize why. He’s been like planning how he’s going to play for weeks. It’s pathetic. I mean I love RPGs and all but I wouldn’t go to the extent he does for any game.

First off, I’ve learned that, at this point in time, Square-Enix does not plan to add any more servers beyond what already exists. That’s right… the same Japanese servers we’ve been playing on are going to wind up being the only servers. I have mixed feelings on this, but I don’t really mind, as the connection speed to these servers has always been excellent for me, even on the overcrowded Ragnarok server.

Speaking of servers, I should mention that there is no real “Server Selection”. When you create a character, you are randomly assigned to a server based on population. Servers that become overpopulated are removed from this random assignment. While this ensures an even distribution of players, and highly reduced lag, it also causes a bit of a problem for those of us who all want to start on the same server. One way to get around this is to create, and then delete, and then recreate until you get the server you want. This can be time consuming, however, as there are nearly 30 servers. So, Square’s answer to this is the Worldpass. If friends REALLY want to play on the same server, someone already on that server can purchase, for a nominal fee, a worldpass. This is a code used by someone creating a new character that will start them off on the server the worldpass was purchased on. This will NOT “transfer” your character, this only allows you to create a new one on that server. The good news is, with the U.S. release, a worldpass is good for up to five people, and remains useful for a week. [/b]

I can see someone playing an MMORPG if it was free, or just buy the CD. I wouldn’t play one you have to pay per month to play because its like I am paying to play a RPG with a bunch of total morons who will backstab me the second they get the chance. Just my opinion.

EDIT: Forget it. General assholery.

The worst they could do is leave you when you’re fighting a tough monster. Remember, FFXI doesn’t allow PvP. In fact, after playing Diablo online, and getting routinely slaughtered before I could gain ANY levels because some fucks want to just kill other players for the hell of it, that’s a good thing.

Example of PvP gone wrong:
Me: Yay! I got the +900 Armor of Titans! Now to equip it…
Other player: Aha! A level 6 newbie! kills me before I can get the armor on
Me: Aaaah! dies and loses the armor to a jerk

Hey Locke where are you because it isnt out yet here in Michigan. So just wondering.

Got it in Wal Mart today (The night shipment was just arriving as we were leaving). We still don`t have a reserved copy yet. EB has 1 as far as I know.

Another reminder: Actually paying for playing FFXI means that you don’t have to see the people who bitch about the “online” aspect and “monthly costs” in the game… so… how to put this…

At least you won’t be seeing them in the game… and if you do see them… why not just “THEN WHY THE FÄCK DID YOU BUY/PAY FOR THIS GAME!?”

It shipped the 28th, but no stores in Buffalo had it available until this morning. I’m going to pick it up after I finish my lunch, but I’m stuck at work till 5p…

I guess you have to download a 180MB patch before you start playing as well, it’ll take awhile to get things going.

I had mine on preorder from eb since like early september… it just “shipped” today not sure when its going to arrive.

People really need to quit going “omg paying for mmorpg wtf0rz” you try running a server with thousands of people on it at a time and keep it stable, its not easy or cheap. I do have a problem with the limit of 1 character and pay 1$ more for each extra character though.

If anyone brought up an idea of an rpgc team, its not a bad idea since its usually hard for some people to make friends early on in mmorpgs so if anyone plays it we should try to get together.

I don’t think I’m going to buy it afterall. I’m really annoyed by the Worldpass system, and after some checking, a ton of titles I want to play are coming out soon, and I still haven’t finished SC2 and Deus Ex.

Don’t you worry TD, as soon as people start to talk about it in the chatroom, you’ll be converted nice and comfy… you midget black mage, you!

I personally have been playing MMORPG’s for years. Started off with Ultima Online (2 years), then played Everquest (3 1/2 years), then tried Anarchy Online, Asherons’ Call, and now currently playing Dark Age of Camelot.

I wont be getting FFXI becuase for a number of reasons. One being the whole world pass/random server BS. Another being I do not like the way the skill/level system is set up. I will be sticking with DAOC until EQ2 comes out =)

I have no problems paying a monthly fee for a good MMO. People always say “well -insert game here- is free” (Usually Diablo 2), but I assure you they are nothing like a true MMORPG. Any game worth its weight will have a fee.

As far as getting backstabbed, cheated, etc… In a MMORPG, your repuation is everything. People will remember you (After all your on the same server with teh same people all the time and you cannot change your name or anything) and what you do. You fuck with too many people and piss off the wrong people, you can forget getting groups, getting in on raids, etc. It is pretty much make a new character and try to be nice this time.

Ya I just an e-mail from squenix that said that today it shipped out. So next time I am out I am pickin it up. See ya there hopefully. Damn the random servers. Maybe we will get lucky. Anyways I will probaly start a thread in the FFC to ask about people names and crap like that.

Expecting it to be like BALDUR’S GATE? Heheheh, lemme tell you, it is fucking NOTHING like it :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve played the game (Green_Mage was part of the beta test, so I could give it a whirl), and let me tell you, it is not worth playing. The world, and all the concepts, the things you can do, the graphics, the music, all of it is great, make no mistake. But, the one, absolutely most important thing about an MMORPG (In MY opinion), is missing:

A decent combat engine.

Oh. My. God. Here’s how the fucking fighting works in FF11:

You’re walking around and you see an enemy. You press tab to look at it, and you press enter, I believe? for a little menu. You can check their strength, or attack them. Once you attack, your dude gets out their weapon, and you walk up and start hitting them automatically, and that’s that. If you’re stronger, you win! If you’re weaker, you lose… :open_mouth: What makes that even more boring is that if you check an enemy’s strength, you can pretty much know the outcome of the fight before you even decide to engage in combat. The way it works is that there are four strengths: Really Weak, Weak, Average, and Strong. Any enemy that isn’t strong, you can beat them, with virtually no problems at all. And the only other thing, is like, spells. You have to actually load spells, which can take a long time, and then you launch it at them. They’re not even quick enough to be good support characters, and they can barely level up on their own.

So yeah. Toooooo bad, too. FF11 was really looking to be a great game. The fighting should have been more like Baldur’s Gate, or Phantasy Star Online. If it were, FF11 would have been a GREAT MMORPG. But alas, it isn’t. :stuck_out_tongue: If you really wanna waste your money, go ahead, but unless you can withstand LONG, BORING level up sessions, well, fuck. Good luck. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sold 1 at Wal Mart today. It got returned because the person didn’t read the Sys reqs properly. Luckily his son saw that before he opened the seal.

Yeah, SG pretty much hit it on the head. FFXI is a game that you want to love, but can’t because the heart and soul of FFXI, the battle engine, just isn’t very fun at times.

Grouping up is mandatory in the game, and soloing only works for a short period, about levels 1 - 10. After that, you get to join a party. This is probably one of the most annoying aspects of the game. FFXI can be devised into 3 groups: The people that are completely clueless, the addicts, and the casual players. I’d say 80% of the game population belongs to the first group, 15% to the second, and 5% to the third group. This makes consistently finding a party very tough, as 15% of the game’s population will probably be 20 levels higher than you next time you log on, and another 80% probably won’t play till level 10. Don’t get me wrong; when you’re in a decent party, things are very fun. Square got that much right at least. Unfortunately, the game is so re-god-damn-diculously huge that if one of your party members dies, it can take a full 20-40 minutes for them to get back, which means a lot of sitting around.

And as for sitting around, expect to do a lot of it in FFXI. If you have anything resembling a life, don’t bother with the craft skills. They eat up so much time, it’s absurd. One could probably learn a craft skill in real life in less time than it’d take to max out a craft skill in this game.

As for the attitude of FFXI, most everyone seemed nice and quite helpful. Most everyone I asked a question of replied with an accurate and helpful answer. Admittedly, this is probably largely because of the 18+ age requirement, but I was very impressed anyway.

I’m glad I had a chance to play FFXI while I did, but my final opinion is that FFXI is simply too much a bag of mixed nuts. Coupled with the fact that I’m insanely busy as of late, there’s simply no chance of my playing FFXI.

waiting for FFX-2 and 2 words for FFXI: World Pass (crappiest system ev0r)

I am still getting it. I dont care about how sucky it is, in fact I might actually like it is all in the eye of the beholder. As a Final Fantasy fan I vow to buy any final fantasy game no matter how crappy it is. If you look at my sig you see why.

An 18+ age requirement? At least that keeps away the 11-year-old AOL bastards that plague all online games.

And hopefully, Square will release a patch or something that gets rid of the World Pass system and allows players to PICK which servers they go to. Knowing Square, though, that’s not going to happen.
