I thought that the SNES used a color palette that was smaller than 16 bits. With 16 bits, you can get pretty much photorealistic color.

You see the basic form of a character, and it’s up to your mind to transmogrify this pixelly blob of pixels into your fantasy view of what you want the character to look like. It’s kind of like reading erotica and imagining a scene, only much, much lazier, since you have a basic idea (or in some cases, a good idea) of what the character should look like.
