…are actually pretty cool. I’m much more of a rap/hard rock/metal person myself, but I found myself at one an emo/ska concert, and I was pleasently surprised. Usually being a man of all music, I’m open to most everything, however the groups I had heard of these were no good (Bright Eyes, Dashboard Confessional), so I turned the rest of it away. The bands I saw were Hot Hot Heat, Less than Jake, and Saves the Day. Now, Hot Hot Heat and Less than Jake was good concert music, mosh pits, circle pits, crowd surfing, fun shit like that. The first song saves the day plays is this melodic, slow tempo lovey dovey type thing, which was cool for the girl I was with but suddenly…a mosh pit breaks out. What the hell? It’s emo for christs sake! You don’t mosh at emo concerts! This goes on for the remainder of the song, until Chris Selbo (I think that’s his name, the lead singer of Saves the Day) told people to just chill out and enjoy the music, which people sorta did, but some people still had too many ants in their pants.
Overall, the music was cool. Some of the songs from Saves the Day I didn’t really enjoy, they had too many tempo changes, the ones that held a more stable beat I thought were better. Less than Jake was awesome, that was some fun ska shit man. No lie, they were great. Unfortnatly, the trombone seemed to be playing the entire thing over and over again.
It was pretty spiffy, I think I’ll root throuh kazaa and get some of their songs.

meh, I don’t listen to emo, or if I do I don’t really know what it is (nor have any of my friends who like or know of emo have ever been able to explain it to me), but I like Bright Eyes. Why? Because he’s an unbelievable lyricist and he blends his instruments very well. Sure, his songs make you want to run off a cliff, but a few of his songs I’m just in love with. Damnit, I wish I could download mp3 versions of them, but I’m laying low due to the RIAA thing right now so I can’t send them to anyone.

Yeah, don’t you love it when a given subculture’s behavior get co-opted and watered down and mainstreamized and thus surgically separated from all meaning?
Billy Corgan (sp?) had a line I thought was rather funny about moshing. “When you see moshing in a Miller Lite commercial, you know it’s time has passed.”
Anyway, glad to hear you had a good time. I’m not that into ska (the “cram the Orange County pop-ska scene down everyone’s throat” craze of 97 kinda oversaturated my tastes…eh well, at least it’s not techno). Emo is rather up my alley though.
I’ve also been to an emo show. It was terrible. I couldn’t breathe, girls were screaming their fucking head off, and people were having a mosh pit to songs that had no business being mosh-pit material.
Heh, glad ya had a good time. I don’t really like emo myself, but I actually don’t mind saves the day, they’re alright. (Dashboard Confessional sucks so bad too, lol :P) I love Ska though, I was the frontman for a ska band once. It’s one of the most fun genres of music out there. Less Than Jake is a really good ska band, too. They know how to put on a good show, especially the sax player, he gets down
Hell yea he does. It was a great show. But the moshers of saves the day almost fucked it all up.
There was this hilarious chick behind me who seemed to be reading my mind. She would scream stuff like “Fucking emo kids!!” the entire time. It was a riot.
Haven’t seen a real emo band to date, it’s all that shitty mainstreme shit probably. Emo is really differen’t than what it is today, it is really all screaming and crying. But emo sucks, ska I don’t like much(I listen to Oi! though)
I like dashboard. They somehow remind me of the Pixies.
Speaking of Ska. Anyone know who sings the song “Super Orgy Porno Party”? Personally though I don’t liek Less than Jake, I like Suicide Machines or Planet Smashers.

Big D and the Kids Table and Mustard Pluag was the most rockin ska show I’ve ever been to. Ska shows are just so happy
