Xbox 360 Recommendations

Recently I bought myself a 360, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War and Lost Odyssey. I’ve liked all these games so far (loved COD4 and LO, not so impressed with Gears of War though). I’ve started to think I may have got the wrong console, as I missed out on MGS4 for the 360, and COD4 and DBZ: Burst Limit are both available on the PS3.

So can anyone recommend some decent 360 games? I’m into fighters, shooters and RPGs. At the moment I’m thinking of picking up Mass Effect, Devil May Cry 4, Burst Limit and Soul Calibur 4, so that should tide me over for a while, but I really think I may have picked the wrong side in the console war…

I played the demo of DMC4 and it was alright… Get Ninja Gaiden 2 though. It’s a hell of a lot better.

Is Burst Limit the DBZ fighting game that’s also on PS3? Because if that’s what I tried… don’t get your hopes up.

MGS4 is MGS. I don’t even know what else to say. Everyone’s fascination with it… baffles me. It’s just… not good. So don’t let it be an issue.

The only thing I’d be worried about missing on PS3 is FFXIII.

Just get Ninja Gaiden 2. Worth every penny.

MGS4 was the shit, don’t listen to Hades.

I should be getting a 360 in the near future, man. Here’s my list of things I’d get that you don’t already own:

Assassin’s Creed
Resident Evil 5 comes out next year with any luck
GTA4
Burst Limit (doesn’t look that great, only goes to the cell saga, wait for the next one they’ll probably release)
The Penny Arcade game is suppose to be ok
Soul Calibur 4 out soon
Ninja Gaiden 2 (I’ve heard so much good about this)

Oblivion is a kick ass RPG and BioShock is a great shooter, albeit a little short and no multiplayer.

Right now I’m just waiting it out and getting ready for the wave of amazing holiday games like Soul Calibur 4, Dead Space, Tiberium Wars: Red Alert 3, and Gears of War 2.

You should start looking to XBox Live Arcade for more games. That’s a big part of the 360’s appeal.

And, btw, the Penny Arcade game completely sucks if you don’t think Penny Arcade is the jesus of all webcomics. If you enjoy PA only casually, do NOT get this game.

Get Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden 2, GTA4, DMC4 Bioshock, Assassin’s Creed in that order. I greatly enjoyed Halo 3 so if you have ppl to play with, its great, esp 2p campaign. I don’t see why you think you picked the wrong side of the console war. The only good thing on PS3 is MGS4 and even then its a matter of taste. The PS3 is sorely lacking in titles.

Just so you know, there are a lot of RPGs coming the way of the 360. Tales of Vesperia, a Star Ocean and a bunch of other things this fall. And Too Human this August.

I used to love the idea of Assassin’s Creed, but I heard it get’s repetitive after a while, the same complaint about Mass Effect. They look great though. Any longevity in them?

I edited my post btw.

AC gets a little repetitive. Its better if you don’t play it in 1 go, but it is a highly enjoyable game. I thought it was great. The repetitiveness doesn’t detract from the enjoyment and its only repetitive if you decide to do the things that are repetitive. You have to understand that a lot of these repetitive things are not necessary and thus if they annoy you, don’t do it.

Mass Effect is repetitive if you decide to explore every planet on every play you do, which I suggest you don’t. The game is excellent and comes with a New Game + option you can use on different difficulty levels.

Both games are relatively short but the replay value is good, esp ME. They’ll take you less than 20 hours if you don’t get everything.

edit: if you like old school RPGs, I enjoyed Blue Dragon more than Lost Odyssey.

I was kind of dismissing Halo 3 as I wasn’t impressed with it, although admittedly I only played a small bit, but since it has 2 player campaign that changed my mind.

I was thinking about Blue Dragon, but the kiddie look of it kind of puts me off, but then again I’m a Kingdom Hearts fan. I might give that a look.

How does Ninja Gaiden 2 play?

NG2’s gameplay is some of the best if not the best controls and action for a 3D platformer.
It is better than DMC4 in terms of gameplay, but DMC4 is nonetheless a good game and worth playing.

Yes Blue Dragon is a bit kiddie, but I think that’s a stupid argument to use against a game. If you like old school RPGs, then you will like BD. If not, then you won’t. Simple as that. If I were to criticize it, I would say BD’s content and characters remains superficial. But that’s what you get for an old school game.

I’ve played countless hours in the co-op campaign in Halo 3. I enjoyed Halo 3 a lot more than GoW. GoW is equivalent to Halo 1 in terms of design. The guys who made GoW have to think about how they want to design levels and the way the player interacts with their environment and weapons. Bungie learned this over the course of making the Halo series. GoW was a good game and its sequels will undoubtedly be better, but Halo 3 nevertheless > GoW.

My experience with GoW was that the encounters you ran into were essentially the same. Every sequence is almost the same scheme of ducking and shooting around that thing you ducked behind. Halo 3 has diverse environments, vehicles, weapons and set ups. The game builds up to a climax of action. GoW remains monotonous in comparison.

As I said earlier too, you have all kinds of RPGs coming out this summer and fall for 360.

I’d say I’d enjoy Blue Dragon so

I wasn’t that impressed with GoW to be honest, after all the hype it received I was expecting much more. Then again, my experience was sullied by playing Army of Two first, which I think stole so much from it.

I’m thinking of getting Mass Effect, Halo 3 and one other game next (love working :D) is there another decent two player game to get? If not I’ll probably grab Ninja Gaiden or Assassin’s Creed for myself.

I had the opposite experience as Sin with Halo3 and GoW… I found halo to be the exact same fight a thousand times in a row whereas in GoW there are so many different weapons and so many different ways to creativly kill shit with all of them. In Halo, although there appears to be many different weapons, the variety is superficial and what you’ll find is that people online won’t be doing much more than jump+shoot no matter what they’re holding. Halo3 has vehicles too… but they’re rarely used. The maps are pretty sterile too…I remember one of them is literally just a flat plateau with a tiny base at either end… They look unnatural and the don’t accomodate any interesting tactics.

Both games get boring really quick, as does GTA4 imo.

Honestly, I’d just beeline for Ninja Gaiden.

Well I’m ordering Mass Effect, Halo 3, Blue Dragon and DMC 4 next week, since Ninja Gaiden 2 is sold out, I’ll probably grab that soon enough.

That should keep me going  I’ve just found Gears and Lost Odyssey really short (for an RPG…) and I’d really like some games with longevity.

Blue Dragon has lots of longevity. Mass Effect has lots of replay value, I went through it 3-4 times. My GF was really sick of it at the end >_>;. Also, note that there is DLC for both ME and BD. BD’s is free. ME’s is 5 dollars for an extra story bit. I can’t think of a good 2P coop game right now sadly. You can also download games off XBLA. They have 2P games there, a few which are genuinely fun. One I have in mind has the graphic template from the KKND series and is an 80s arcade style vertical scrolling shooter. Another vertical shooter you can play 2P is Ikaruga. Excellent game. Its great AND cheap. Get NG2 as soon as you can. It is PURE awesome. One of the bosses is a metaphore for a vagina and defloration. I am NOT kidding.

It sounds like you’re not describing the campaign Hades.

Jump+shoot doesn’t work against The British One-Up-One-Down strategy my roomie and I employ for Shotty Snipes on The Pit. That throwback strategy is so much fun.

Whoa, Sin, I’m totally not. I thought most people only ever bought Halo for online. GoW has a fun campaign imo, but yeah it’s really short.

The maps with the bat things in them that rape you if you go into the dark… those are interesting in 2 player.

I almost only play campaigns.

I can’t stand FPS-type games in single-player. That being said, I don’t take them too seriously; I just don’t think they’re fun unless I’m playing against other people. Dying in stupid ways is entertaining for much longer than it probably should be.

Halo 3 is probably the best shooter I’ve played in a long time. The only thing I dislike about the multiplayer is the maps; the maps, as Hades said, seem sterile and plain with a lack of variation in the tactics. However the support given by the developers is astounding, with everything from new maps (a new one came out yesterday!) to the double exp weekends which offer varying and exciting new game modes to keep the game fresh and new. The campaign is great and Hades is crazy, it’s very fun (especially with two people, and on Xbox live you can play with 4 people in the campaign). I highly reccomend it.

But its time to get real about Gears of War. I, too, was kind of disappointed with it. Especially in the difficulty levels; casual is a little too easy for me while hardcore is a little too difficult. The lack of balance in that department was the real kicker for me. That being said there are some cool fire fights (like the one where you first meet the new Locust troops, the guys in the jackets) but like Sin said it’s pretty much a rehash of every other fight with a lack of new tactics. And the last battle was underwhelming as hell, where it pretty much comes down to hide behind something and pump the guy full of ammo before he reaches you. Gears 2 looks super sexy though. All in all though I thought it was worth it. And Army of Two was cool, but I only played a level or two of it.

If you like Grand Theft Auto then the fourth iteration is exciting and fresh and great to look at. But if you don’t like GTA then you won’t like this one, as it is pretty much the same as the others except this one seems to have a story line. I would suggest it, but that condition is important.

Kameo is an oft over looked title. For $7-9 it’s a good 10 or so hour game with lots of variation in the gameplay. Besides that though there isn’t much in terms of replay value, but it’s worth picking up I think.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned The Orange Box. Five games for around $35 is a great deal, especially considering the quality of Half Life 2. Portal sucked and Team Fortress 2 needs support but I think the HL2 was worth every penny. I suggest this as well.

Kane and Lynch seems pretty cool and unique, where one character is the mercenary badass and the other guy is the pussy who doesn’t really fight that much. Besides that distinction (and the odd vertical split screen) it’s a story driven shooter that has some pretty fun action sequences and some good dialogue. I only played a few levels of this as well though.

The original Xbox was a gold mine of sports games and the 360 follows suit, so if you like sports games then you’re in luck. I haven’t really played RPGs in years so I don’t even know whats up with that.

I never played the Halo3 Campaigns. I don’t own the game so I didn’t bother. I was talking about online only.
