Which Wonka?

Poll speaks for itself. Which movie do you like better?

Personally, I like the new one not because Johnny Depp is in it (although he does a great job) but it’s much, MUCH more like the book than the 1970 one. Charlie Bucket’s character is pretty much equal to the original kid who did it, but the four other kids in this one are much more bratty and obnoxious and more how I imagined they would be. I also liked the grandparents in this one better because they too seemed to fit Dhal’s book description of them. Now obviously for Wonka, Gene Wilder gives Wonka a sort of kind and understanding wisdom, but Depp does a better job of bringing out Willy Wonka’s mischievous and eccentric attitude (again from the book).

Well, that’s my opinion. Let’s hear yours, in 3…2…1…GO!

I loved the new one… I just never really got into the old one.
I’ve also never read the story.

Haven’t read the book or seen the new movie. I prefer the old one, i like Gene Wilder anyhow. The new one just looks a tad creepier then i prefer, mostly just how Johnny Depp looks. Then there’s all that merchandise at hot topic for it. I can hear idiots saying, " omg a new tim burton movie, must buy its ugly shit". But that’s just my assumptions, might end up not hating it as much when i see it a year or so from now.

I liked them both alot, but I’m going to have to go with the old one.

There’s no bubble machine in the new one >:o
And where were the Snozberries?!

Bah. I thought this thread would be about our favorite candies.

I’ll have to see at least the new movie. I had barely heard about this whole Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory stuff before anyway…

I definitely preferred the new one. The Wonka character was much closer to the original novel version. He was creepy and odd, though they humanized him a bit too much with all that stuff about his childhood and his father. I also loved the new, improved bratty kids, though they DID leave out one of the best lines in the world:

You LOSE! Good day, sir!

fixed.

It’s been probably 13 or 14 years since I saw the old one, but I remember not really caring too much for it. Then again, I had barely started school by that time, so maybe that’s changed.

As of now though, the new one is one of my favorite movies (only seen it once so far though, so I can’t give it an official ranking :P). I liked the updated Oompa Loompa numbers (ohhhh god I laughed so hard when I saw those Freddy Mercury-like outfits), and the updated kids, especially Mike Teevee because he reminded me of so many people I may or may not know. The Wonka character himself was a lot more interesting and fun, and didn’t sing any irritating songs.

However – and I don’t know if this is how it was in the book, as I didn’t read it when it was assigned in 4th grade – I was just slightly put off by the overly heartwarming ending (yeah I know that’s much of a spoiler, but it’s the ending dammit, you don’t spoil the ending!). It worked, but as a Burton fan, I really wasn’t expecting it. Now the scene when the group first walks into the gates of the factory… classic. >D

Also: “I need a… hair?” XD XD XD XD XD

It WAS like that in the book, actually.

That said, while I did like this movie, I still liked Wilder better.

i’m a little disapointed that Tim Burton didn’t do the tunnel scene like the old one did. man that scene gave me nightmares as a kid. anyway the rest of the movie was great. I speacilly like how they gave the other four kids an epiloge. In the first movie you never knew what became of them other than Gene Wilder saying “They will back to there regular old miserable selves but a little wiser.”

:moogle: What no creepy guys that look like natzis from an indiana jones movie?
