What are the classic PC games

I am wondering what are the classic PC games, which I mean games that were out before 2000 (I know which games since then that are good like Half-Life 2 and Battlefront 2), but can still be played on Windows XP without having to use a powerful program like DOSBox to run it?

The only games I am not looking for information is Starcraft, Half-Life 1, and Unreal Tournament. I already own those games, so I don’t need to get motivated to play them.

By the way, are the Dark Force series (Dark Force, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy) worth getting? Same with Amecian Megee’s Alice.

My brother borrowed Jedi Knight from a friend once, and I gotta say, that and Jedi Power Battles are the only two Star Wars games I’ve enjoyed. Well, the only other SW game I’ve played is Masters of Tera Kasi (or whatever it was called, the shitty fighting game).

PLANESCAPE TORMENT PLANESCAPE TORMENT PLANESCAPE TORMENT

also baldur’s gate and fallout are pretty good i guess

In case Pierson didn’t make it clear: GET PLANESCAPE TORMENT. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY AND SACRED GET PLANESCAPE TORMENT.

There are way too many classic pc games to list. Most all of the older dos-based games will play fine if you use one of the dos emulators. I personally use dosbox.

A few pre-2000 classics. Remember this is FAR from a complete list. Some have appeared on consoles. You can tell my favorite PC genre is adventure games. Somone else will be able to flesh out the others.

Adventure Games

King’s Quest 1,2,4,5,6
Leisure Suit Larry 2-5
Space Quest 1-5
Grim Fandango
The Dig
Monkey Island 1-4
Redguard
Death Gate
Gabriella Knight - The Beast Within
Under a Killing Moon, Pandora Directive
Sam and Max - Hit the Road

RPGs

Ultima 1-7
Star Trail
Betrayal of Krondor
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands
Heroes of the Lance

Strategy

Caesar III
Civilization II
Fantasy Empires
Sim Ant

Action-type

Wing Commander

Gimmick Games

Lemmings
The Incredible Machine

Since Planescape Torment (which is barely older than your age criterion 8P) has already been hollered out: I would suggest the Fallout games.

One word:

ARCANUM
Made by Sierra, no longer in production and has little to no support what-so-ever… But its the best iso-RPG next to Fallout.

I second Fallout.
Also, If you need any help with DOSBox, just lemme know, Rirse.

The Eye of the Beholder games (1-3) are classic AD&D style RPG’s. There are also some other AD&D releases that have a Bard’s Tale aura about them (Pool of Radience, etc.), but the game play is so horrible that they aren’t really worth checking out.

Also, for the grandfather of all strategy games check out Dune 2, the Building of a Dynasty. I beleive it’s the first of it’s kind.

Jedi Outcast and Academy are good, but they aren’t classics. Academy is the better one though, but some of the story elements require Outcast.

Fallout, and Wasteland, Bard’s Tale, and a whole bunch of other old Interplay games. They are playable on Windows, and come in huge cheap bundles of loving and goodness.

EDIT: Also buy X-COM: UFO Defense.

Civilization and Alpha Centauri.

If you want space sims, which havent had much mentioned here besides the Wing Commanders, get Freespace 2 and try getting both Independence Wars (moreso the second, in some ways I suggest you play the second before the first!).

I really enjoyed the Jedi games. I’ve said it before, but when I started playing those games I’d lose all track of time and still be playing when the sun came up. It’s creepy. I thought they were great. The storyline is kind of iffy, but the gameplay really makes up for it.

The Thief series is pretty classic to. Obviously Doom and Duke Nukem. The old Warcraft games (the first one is horrible - horrible! But Warcraft II set the standard). There’s Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Gold (really old shooters)…

Alice was a big title that kind of flopped. A lot of people said it was really just a kind of ok game. The first Unreal I liked but it was really just kind of boring. System Shock 2 is great, and System Shock 1 is kind of hard to find but I’ve heard it’s good too. Then there’s the various HL mods like Day of Defeat, Counter Strike, Firearms…

Fallout 1 & 2 are good.

Myth 1 & 2 are also really good. Not to be confused with Myst. Myth was made by Bungie (Halo). It is a RTS where you control soldiers, archers, dwarves with molotov cocktails, and other characters against an army of the undead. Good stuff.

There are way too many classic PC games to list all of them.
Here are some gems I think you should try if you can get them. I also denoted the RPG games.

Baldurs Gate 1 (RPG)
Baldurs Gate 2 (RPG)
King’s Quest 1,2,3,4 <— 2 has recently been updated for graphics and is available free
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Diablo 2
Fallout 1 & 2 (RPG)
Planescape Torment (RPG)
Majesty
Day of the Tentacle
Ultima 3,4,5,6 (RPG)
Might and Magic 1,2,4 (RPG)
Day of the Tentacle
Masters of Magic
Defender of the Crown (Really old arcade game recently remade)

Um wow… All those posts and not one mention of Commander Keen games. If those ain’t classic PC games, I don’t know WHAT is !

Still obtaining new games, but so far I bought a few new ones off of ebay. This is the list of computer games I have now.

Unreal Tournament - Game of the Year Edition

Half-Life Platium Edition (has Blueshift, Opposing Force, Team Fortress, and Counter Strike)

Star Craft and Brood Wars

Alice

Dark Forces

Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith

Jedi Outcast

Age of Empire 1 Gold (got from deathstyke’s f-serv and put on a cd)

Command & Conqeror Red Alert and Tiberian Sun (got both in the same auction for Jedi Knight)

Sims 2 DVD Edition (even so I can’t play it yet)

Civilization 3 and Conquest

Fallout 1 and 2

Yoda Stories

That all the games I know of right now. There is another game I got from the auction that had Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, and the two Command & Conqeror games…but I rather not mention it.

Once I get my new computer (which I am saving up for and should own by October) I will continue to get some new games including Warcraft 2 Battlenet, Warcraft 3 (with expansion), Diablo Battlechest (1, 2, and the expansion for 2), Galactic Batteground (with expansion), Jedi Academy (last Kyle game I need), Age of Empire 2 Gold, Age of Mythology Gold, Civilization 4, Alpha Centuari (with expansion), Knights of the Old Republic, Sith Lords, Shadows of the Empire, and some other games.

I can’t beleve No one has Surgested Worms, It was out before 2000. (I know the Original used DOS)

Bn
Wha… even 2+3 were out before 2000. (used Direct X)

I lucked out and got a bunch of computer games at Half-Price Books for 30 dollars. Here are the following I got.

Quake 1

Quake 2

Quake 3 Arena

Unreal 1 Gold

Diablo 1

Diablo 2 : Lord of Destruction (I will get Diablo 2 later)

Doom Collection (Doom 1, 2, and Final)

They have some other games there too, like Serious Sam and Duke Nukem 3D that I might get later. Once I buy a new computer, I will get Unreal Tournament 2004 from there…as it only 15.
