Ok, obviously, I’m curious as to what YOU think is the hardest game ever made. Not nessecarily RPGs.
For me, I nominate Kid Chameleon, for the Sega Genesis. Why is that?
Imagine a game with 90+ levels, some of the quite long.
All of them timed.
It’s easy to die, but mostly can be avoided.
Forced sidescrolling (I HATE THAT STUPID WALL OF DEATH!)
And many other factors. Fortunately, if you play right, continues and extra lives are in abundance. Not to mention there’s more secrets than the Metroid series.
Now, subtract any sort of save/password feature. In all my years of gaming, I’ve never gotten farther than maybe halfway through.
And yet it’s also fun as hell. Ah well. What could you add to the roster?
Yeah… Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads were nasty. I also gave Megaman X6 a try and that’s up there as well. As is Alundra (not because it’s really all that difficult in that you keep getting “Game Over” screens, but because it takes so much damn practice to get anywhere and/or to figure out the puzzles).
Red Alert 1 for me. It’s easy in easy mode but way harder in medium. I can’t complete the Allies in that. And hard is just impossible. But I love to play it 'cause I think it rocks. It’s way better than RA2
X6 is just poorly designed, to the point some sections are IMPOSSIBLE without the EXACT setting of abilities (hyper dash and jump with Shadow Armor if you want to get ANYWHERE)
NG, oldies or new one, tough as heck. I’d also toss Castlevania 1 up there, as the diff curve is pretty steep.
Rudora, you’re a retarded jerkface ^^ Shinobi actually is harder than all of those, by quite a lot. I doubt you’ve played past level three, though, if you think a game like NG is actually challenging.
Every time someone brings this up, they always whine and complain about not being able to win without shadow armor. Are you guys just not very resourceful or something? Because there’s nowhere in the game that you need to have shadow armor to beat.
It’s not whining, it’s poor playtesting. You should always be able to clear any level with any armor, with some shortcuts or passages optimised for one suit over the other. It should NEVER BE IMPOSSIBLE when you can’t swap in level and kill yourself just to change suit, that’s just retarded. Besides, the Blade Armor is crap, so it’s not like it’s a very hard choice.
Hey, I like the Blade Armor. It’s still nowhere near as cool as Shadow though. Shadow is probably the most innovative I’ve used in an X game, which is why X6 is one of my favourites though everyone else hates it.
And where do you NEED to have Shadow Armor? I’m assuming in one of the last stages somewhere, but I still don’t think it’s necessary. And even if it was, what are you so mad about? It’s not like it’s anything but the typical powering-up that you need in order to beat MOST games. You don’t go fight Emerald Weapon without materia. You shouldn’t be able to beat X6 without the Shadow Armor. Stop acting like it’s a tragedy. It’s more formula than anything.
I nominate both Milo’s Castle and Castelian. Not because they’re particulary hard, but because It’s impossible toto finish a single level, even the first, without dying at least three times (Castelian) or switching the machine off in frustration (Milon). And without looking at a walkthrough. I link them here and here.
If you mean for actual difficulty, then I don’t know. I’ve never met a game I wasn’t able to kill after working on it for a good half-hour. And I never bought Shinobi.
Just a side note… Emerald Weapon was optional. Sure there are things you shouldn’t be able to do without super-powering up, but beating the game isn’t one of them. Note that I don’t actually know what you two are talking about since I haven’t gotten very far in X6, but I did want to make that point.
altered beast. theres only five levels but you only have three lives and theres a boss at the end of each level. major pain in the ass. ive only been able to get to level four and that was just because of dumb luck.
flicky. you have run through a house and pick up a bunch of birds whlie cats and lizards chase after you. you think it would be easy but its not. i could only get to level ten. theres like a hundred. :moogle:
<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/subsites/twistedrpg/images/hero/rirse.gif”> What I think is the hardest game has changed a lot since the days I been playing videogames. If a few years ago, I would had said Legend of Zelda 2, but once I got the Zelda collection disc, I was able to beat Zelda 2 with moderate differculty. But now I would still say Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 (don’t know about 3 or X-Box), and Megaman Zero.
I also had some close calls with Viewtiful Joe (see Fire Leo) and Megaman X 4 (Sigma) too, if you want to add those two to the list.
Battletoads is a bitch. The Ninja Gaidens are a bitch. And Zelda 2 was a REAL bitch.
I also feel that Fester’s Quest deserves a mention. No save or password feature makes GG something something.
And I’ve recently gotten back into Maximum Carnage for the SNES…by the GODS that game can get annoying. You don’t know frustration until you’re being pounded senseless by four fat guys.
Finally, I must give a nod in the direction of Marble Madness. Never have I both hated and loved a game so much.
GG, wait until you’re surrounded by 4 umbrella guys. It’s a pretty sad sight to see Spidey lose a fight to a bald guy with an umbrella named Ringo. Then there’s the cops near the end who have a habit of shooting each other.
I’m probably going to nominate Battletoads in Battlemaniacs. It’s, believe it or not, even HARDER than Battletoads, but for poor game design reasons. Your character is much too large, there are many things that can kill you in one hit, and… the Turbo Tunnel is now impossible.
Oh, and then there’s Deadly Towers, a Zelda-esque game where slimes take about 30 sword hits. Your hero? He takes about 2 hits.
Oh, by the way, my little brother beat Kid Chameleon in one sitting without any cheats or savestates or anything. We played 2 players, and it took 8 HOURS. I lost it at the second-last level, but he actually managed to beat it.
