Top 10 Handhelds that didnt make it

http://www.gamespy.com/top10/january04/handhelds/

Pretty smart selections there. Too bad about the N-Gage and WonderSwan snicker

They are a little early saying that N-gage “didn’t make it.”

That is more a case of speculation at this point. It is still possible it could ‘make it’ but I’ll be the first to admit that it ain’t too damn likely.

Bah. I read it for the commentary. Whether they’re right is entirely problematical.

Yeah, too bad the WonderSwan was actually really successful and didn’t deserve to be on the list, especially not as #2.

Or, in short, every system bar the gameboy family. :thud: I’d have thought the Gamegear would’ve just avoided being described as “failed”- certainly, it’s the most successful bar the GBs (so far)- and it is a little early to write the N-gage off as well.

The Lynx is still a God in handheld console form, though. Maybe not one of the top Gods, probably just “the God of janitors” or something crummy like that, but it is still, onetheless, a God.

Amen to that. I’d argue that the GP32 has no spot on that list either, given that its been out for little over a year, and is korea-only (unless you import). I have one, and i think its pretty fucking awesome. It can run emulators, play mp3s and movies. I dont see how it ‘didn’t make it’.

I literally fucking puched my fucking desk when i saw what number one is. Goddammit, what does everyone have against SNK? What the fuck did they do to you? Kill your kittens? Jesus christ, if theres one handheld that should not be on this list at all its NGPC. God, next to the hulking pile of horse shit that was GBC NGPC pwned.

And what the hell is the author of this article talking about?
“Marketing, money, and timing were not on SNK USA’s side. It takes countless millions of dollars to establish a new brand in the U.S., and SNK USA just didn’t have the cash to compete.”
What? Marketing? I saw more NGPC ads than i ever did of GBC. Money? SNK was pretty much on the same lines as sega or capcom as far as profits are concerned. Did this man forget the obvious fact that it was NeoGeo who reinvented the arcade scene in the 90s? NeoGeo was a pretty big name. Its not like they were an unknown.

Godammit, the idiocy of this author boggles my mind…

You people still read GameSpy?

FAIL.

The WonderSwan didn’t fail, it just wasn’t released in the United States of America and Europe. And it isn’t failing.

Among other things - gives me something to do at work and occasionally there are good things there. I think people like to bash Gamespy just to jump on the bandwagon.

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> 10 is the worst, number 1 is the best of the “losers”.

If by best, you mean number 1 was considered the worst failure of any portable ever.

Bah.
I hate GameSpy.

Amen.

These are the favourites of the ones that didn’t become successful.

Oh, and the #1 Worst Handheld of all time is the one in TD’s pants.

No, I’m pretty sure #10 is “never had a chance” and #1 is “almost made it”

I don’t think that the Game Gear deserves to be on the list since it sold for quite awhile and I thought it did fine. Yes, it had some major problems (like batteries), but it was still fine and I thought it sold fairly well.

I actually owned both a GameGear and Game.com. The Game.com sounded good on paper, but didn’t have ANY good games (although a port of C:SotN would have been fucking kickass). The GameGear, on the other hand, was a MUCH better system than the Gameboy, and its failure was truly sad.

As for the Wonderswan, let’s face it, if it wasn’t for the FF remakes, would we here in the US even CARE about the Wonderswan? I’ve tried a few games using an emulator, and it isn’t that great. The GBA is a much better system, IMHO.

And as much as I love SNK, the Neo Geo Pocket deserved to fail. SNK made nearly nothing but fighting games for it, and when you stick to one genre (especially since we know SNK is great at a shitload of genres), it spells repetition, which spells disaster, which spells many years of bankruptcy, which spells someone buying the company and releasing SS5 in the US without translating ANYTHING.

I’d beg to differ. The NGPCNo, had many many platforming and puzzle games too. It was missing RPG’s, but if playmore would have held out on it longer we would have seen some.
NGPC Master game list

And yea. Im kind of pissed at the crappy translation SS5 got too, but hey, any new SS works for me.

I’ve thought the same thing. I mean, if it more interesting games, I’m sure that we would have heard much more about it on normal websites, but you only hear about the FF Remakes.
