This child is smarter than we will ever be.

NGAGE sucks!! But yeah, the kid’s IQ won’t change so much. 137 isn’t a whole lot, one of my teachers is somewhere in the range of 160.

Bah I dont think IQ means shit. I have an IQ of 120 something and a friend of mine who has about the same IQ is smarter than me in some areas and I am smarter than him in others. Not all areas can be measured.

Exactly Lanyx, 137 isn’t really that high. Its not even considered a genius which is considered around 145 and above. I’ve been tested for my IQ before and it fell in the range of 130-135.

I’ve never been tested for my IQ…

I took a test and received 180ish…I knew I was a genius!!!

IQ doesn’t test intelligence. It tests critical thinking skills, and like Sin said, is probably tailored to age. If any one of us took an IQ test tailored to three year olds we’d all smoke it with like 500s. The kid isn’t necessarily smart.

On a more important note, the last name of one of the girls I currently have a crush on is Mikhail. That’s pretty fuckin’ cool. I like this kid.

So? I’ve been tested to have a 161 IQ. I’m not a fucking genius- it lies.

You like Russians huh?

I like any girl who talks to me and is charming. She doesn’t look even remotely russian though. She looks like she’s from the near or middle east. Which is wierd, since I usually don’t like them either :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m agreeing with Hades again, somebody stop me before I actually like him. Nooooooo. But yea, looks = shallow, although a nice bonus when attached to cool people.

But yeah, is 130+ really only the top 2% of the population? O_o

I don’t know. When I took at four/five, they said I was in the 99.9%, according to everyone who was there and remembers (basically, everyone who was there except me) and I was just over 160, I think. Something like that.

Wow…The worlds a little retarded, isn’t i?

True. Intelligence and ethics have nothing to do with each other. Bush may be smart, but as far as ethics go, I’m siding with everyone else.

IQ tests are stupid and are a stupid way of measuring intelligence. Also, one of the original intents of IQ test were to prove that certain people were smarter than others, such as whites being the smartest people, and should have rights that others shouldn’t, such as voting. The tests were orignally designed as a way to justify segregation and the poor treatment of minorities. Now you may be saying, “but Infonick, in a nother thread you said that races don’t exist, aren’t you contradicting yourself now?” Not all, in fact this goes along with what I said about race being a social construction and a way of rpoving that some people are smarter than others. Of course there will always be anomolies that cross the barriers, such as this kid, but it is just one instance out of many.

I wouldn’t argue ethics as a point of fact. Intellect, I will. I seriously believe the man is lower-end-of-average, at best.

TrkJac, the world is more than a little fucked up.

The original intent of the original IQ test was to identify children who could benefit from some extra tutoring.

Ah… the IQ test… Next time I go to my parents I’ll grab that essay on its origins and try to post it before this thread dies or loses all hope (i.e. within another day or two at most though I doubt it)

In the mean time I would like to argue that we, the members of this board are actually somewhat likely to be in a higher bracket if averaged out. Though many of our posts would seem to imply the exact opposite, I think that we can hold meaningful conversations and talk about things at a level higher than most people I went to high school with, and probably most people I go to college with.

As for that whole standard deviation bullshit, I don’t buy it. Though people may claim that IQ test scores follow a normal curve (the name of the bell curve), I believe that the spread is a little more linear for the most part. of the 250ish poeple who were supposed to graduate from my high school with me, at least 20 were “in the top 2%” so either I have been pampered by living in a region that isn’t stupid, or something is seriously off about that standard deviation claim.

And while we are talking on the subject, I have had my IQ measured on multiple occasions… the lowest score I recieved was 39 points less than the highest I ever recieved. Now there may be some room for argument about having a good day or a bad day, but 39 points is a huge jump. So take the numbers with a grain of salt.

IQ tests are flawed in that they define intelligence as being patern recognition, but that’s such a simple, one-sided view that it’s laughable. IQ tests are nothing more than a stunt, the intellectual equivilent of a strong-man contest.

And while Vorpy’s statement is close enough to the truth (The test was actually created to identify lower preforming students so they could recieve additional tutoring, not the other way around.)

It’s also very true that one of the early applications for the IQ test involved racial and cultural segregation.

Few people realize that the tests being used today — of which the IQ test continues to be the most popular — represent the end result of a historical process that has its origins in racial and cultural bigotry. Many of the founding fathers of the modern testing industry … advocated eugenics. Eugenics is a movement concerned with the selective breeding of human beings. Selected human beings would be mated with each other in an attempt to obtain certain traits in their offspring, much the same way that animal breeders work with champion stock. The eventual goal of eugenics is to create a better human race. The Nazis took this idea to the extreme. All “inferior” humans, especially Jews, retarded children or adults, and any individuals with genetic defects, were to be destroyed; and so many ill and retarded people, and many Jews, were killed during World War II.

As a result of his views on intelligence and society, Goddard lobbied for restrictive immigration laws. Upon his “discovery” that all immigrants, except those from Northern Europe, were of “surprisingly low intelligence;” such tight immigration laws were enacted in the 1920s. According to Harvard professor Steven Jay Gould in his acclaimed book The Mismeasure of Man, these tests were also influential in legitimizing forced sterilization of allegedly “defective” individuals in some states.

IQ Test: Where Does It Come From and What Does It Measure?

IQ = (Mental Age / Actual Age) * 100. So while he is indeed smart for his age, it just means he’s only a few years smarter then he should be. And Mental Age is really subjective on problem solving and logical stuff. It’s quite possible (and probable) that he’ll average out as he progresses though life.
