They Might Be Giants

I don’t know if anyone else here is a fan or not (though I vaguely remember Charle posting the lyrics to Cyclops Rock one day, I think), but They Might Be Giants just released a new album, called The Spine. I went to see them at Trees in Dallas on July 17th and 18th, and they totally rocked out the house. It was freaking incredible.

For those of you who don’t think you’re familiar with They Might Be Giants, you probably are. Homestar Runner fans might know them from an e-mail in which Strong Bad sings about how he might make the town different (they performed the background music), or from a new video that they posted for the song “Experimental Film” (which just happens to be on the new album). People of an older generation (like myself) might remember them from Tiny Toon Adventures, who did an animated rendition of two of the Giants’ songs (“Particle Man”, and “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”). Yet others might recognize They Might Be Giants’ song “Dog on Fire” as the theme song from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, or their song “Boss of Me” as the theme to Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle.

Anyway, I’m just freaking stoked that not only did I get a new Giants album, but I got to see them in person, twice in one weekend. It was pretty awesome. I’ve got pictures.

I just noticed that GG Crono’s sig is a line from “Experimental Film,” and that his avvy is from HR’s video for it. Awesome.

you son of a bitch, I was just gonna talk about them! the friggin coincidences never end!!! i’m going crazy!

there, sorry I called you a bitch 11 times. I just got a little stressed when so many weird things happened in so little amount of time.

and yes I am a huge TMBG fan. if you remember back in the day, zepp posted a pic seeing if anyone could guess who they were and I was like “booya, John Linnell, John Flansburgh, combined together they form They Migth Be Giants” and I won his award of respect or somthing.

and I remember those tiny toons videos! I was watching it with my neighbor casey, and when they said “by they might be giants” we looked at eachother and went WTF?! anyway later my mom found the video of that episodes and bought it. we had a video of all the tmbg music videos. its lost. but they made a new one WITH the tiney toons and some other new videos.

Yeah, the new one has Doctor Worm, which is, bar none, my favorite TMBG song (which they played both nights, with confetti, story below). You can order it from them at their online store. The video (or DVD, if you want quality) is called “Direct From Brooklyn.”

BTW, about that confetti; during the part of the song when “Rabbi Vole” is playing the solo, Flansburgh reached behind Linnell to flip the switch to blast the confetti over the crowd, missing the last couple of notes of the solo (as if everyone in the audience didn’t know them). After the song, Linnell looks in his coffee and says, sadly, “Is confetti edible?” Flansburgh and the band of Dans look at him in disbelief and Linnell says “I mean, I don’t want to get sick or anything.” and Flansburgh says “Oh, I thought you asked if it was Oedipal.” It was pretty frikkin’ funny.

the cups, I think I stole the smaller one, my sisters friend Bill stole the other one.
Proof that her name is sarah! AAAAAAAAAH!

Make a hole with a gun perpendicular
to the name of this town in a desktop globe
exit wound in a foreign nation
showing the home of the one this was written for

My apartment looks upside down from there
water spirals the wrong way out the sink
and her voice is a backwards record
it’s like a whirl pool and it never ends

Ana Ng and I are getting old
and we still haven’t walked in the glow
of each others’ majestic presence
Listen, Ana, hear my words
They’re the ones you would think I would say
If there was a me for you

All alone at the '64 World’s Fair
80 dolls yelling “Small girl after all”
Who was at the DuPont pavillion?
Why was the bench still warm?
Who had been there?

Or the time when the storm tangled up the wire
to the horn on the pole at the bus depot
And in back of the edge of hearing
These are the words that the voice was repeating

Ana Ng and I are getting old
and we still haven’t walked in the glow
of each others’ majestic presence
Listen, Ana, hear my words
They’re the ones you would think I would say
If there was a me for you

When I was driving once
I saw this painted on a bridge
“I don’t want the world, I just want your half”

They don’t need me here, and I know you’re there
Where the world goes by like the humid air
and it sticks like a broken record
everything sticks like a broken record
everything sticks until it goes away
and the truth is we don’t know anything

Make a little birdhouse in your soul. Seriously.

I listen to TMBG in public and people think I’m insane. Their songs are so random, but ever so good.

They played july 4th here at the Taste of Chicago. I enjoyed it a lot. Good to see they’re just as vibrant and silly as they were many years ago.

They’re neat.
Or at least okay.

All of the music in my car is either TMBG, or game soundtracks. How sad is that? Well, at least I’ve always got something to listen to.

Heh…glad you noticed.

I’m not a HUGE fan of TMBG, but what I have heard, I liked. I have a copy of the album Flood and downloaded Experimental Film the day after I saw the H*R vid.

And BTW, those Tiny Toons vids were my first taste of them.

Well, if anyone’s curious, if you go to TMBG.com, you can actually download thier MP3s for free from any of their 10 albums, their several EPs, or their live performances. Of course, it’s random what’s available, but free is still free. You can get songs of theirs for $0.99 a piece at TheyMightBeGiants.com, if you’re of the variety who likes to choose and pay for things.

I just realized.
I actually own that Tiny Toons video.

Man, I didn’t know TMBG did the Boss of Me song!

I also loved the Tiny Toons viedos with their songs - I think that episode was among my favorites.

One of my roommates from college listened to them, and I really enjoyed it when she did. It was different, and I think that’s what I liked about it.

It was funny, at the concert on the 18th, instead of playing the full song, they just played the Malcolm in the Middle cut of “Boss of Me.” Afterwards they said, “most of you guys have only ever heard that much of it anyway.”

Tiny Toons was my first introduction to TMBG as well. Though I like them, on the whole their stuff’s hit-or-miss with me, with little inbetween.

Oh yeah, if you like TMBG, you will probably like Sparks as well. Damned funny.
