The Quake2 Thread!!!!!!!!! [aka, RO Is For Your Old Toothless (Korean) Granny!]

I’ve decided to upload the q2 stuff into my staff folder, so staffers can just ftp it out of there. It’ll be done tomorrow.

All I have is an old burned copy of Q2 with the bare essentials. Is there anything else I’ll need to find elsewhere, like the patch?

Mweehehehe

If you’re going to start a server Merl… HSite has some kickass mods. I wanna try King of the Server… Mwehehe…

Edit: Ugh. Fileplanet. I HATE fileplanet.

Still, I’m also interested in the Jailbreak nmod.

Okay, I’ve downloaded eraserfolders.zip, and extracted them to my Quake 2 directory. I go in, I run QuickStart.exe, and it says something to the effect of: “Error! Something bad has happened (Maybe out of memory. Try closing a few apps, then running.) Ending Quick Start.”

I look at my empty taskbar and system tray and say “The only app I seem to be running is Windows Explorer. Maybe Windows counts too.”

Quick Run.exe tells me that “Component ‘RICHTX32.OCX’ not correctly registered: file is missing or invalid.” I think this problem may go away when I get QuickStart to run succesfully.

To quote Towlie, “I have no idea what’s goin’ on.”

I’m interested in honing my skills by practice-deathmatching vs. the eraser bots (the ingame enemies obviously don’t act remotely like online players). Otherwise I may have to play with you people. Ugh.

CH, get quake2nogame.zip from the fserv/ftp (it’s not in ftp yet though). It has everything you’ll need but the game itself, which you have.

I don’t think QuickStart and QuickRun will work if you’re running them from the eraserctf folder, only the eraser folder. If the error is coming from the one stemming from the eraser folder, it might be due to the fact that you didn’t install the way they like (since you used my folders and not the .exe). If though it does work running through the eraser folder, just launch your game, go to the console, and type

set game eraserctf

and then start a new game and the bots should come with you; if you wanted to play CTF with bots that is. Running through the eraser folder will start deathmatch.

Thanks, Merl. I’ll be living anywhere up to 3.33 seconds in DM soon.

And now, some entirely innapropriate celebration

      !

Thanks again.

no problem, just so I know, which of the two ways I suggested worked?

Okies, problems are solved.

The way that worked for me was to enter the game, immediately hit the “~” key to get into the console, and type

set game eraser

The game reloaded and it had the Eraser Q2 logo in the background of the console rather than the plain horseshoe-'n-nails that we all know and love. When you get into a multiplayer game, it will not load the bots 'till you tell it to (i.e. go into the console again and type "bot_num ", minus the quotes, followed by the number of bots you want (in arabic numerals, smart-ass). For example:

bot_num 4

should load 4 bots. I think they’ll all have the Cipher skin unless you tell it differently (check the readme.txt in the eraser folder, but be careful: notepad doesn’t read any of their end-of-line characters, so you’ll have to deal with a bunch of box characters). The FAQ is at the end of the file; just go to the bottom and scroll up till you find “FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS” screaming out at you. I think it tells you how to change the bot skins.

set game eraserctf should work the same, but I’m happy enough without trying it.

I’m sure you can create shortcuts to eraser and eraserctf, same as with regular ctf; create a shortcut, and add +set game eraser after the quake2.exe in the target window. You might even be able to shortcut your practice settings:

quake2.exe +set game eraser +bot_num 4

Wouldn’t that be wild?

Oh hey, I got a few interesting Q2 files, maps and stuff, I’ll ahve a filserver up with them tonight.

I’ve noticed that custom skins and models aren’t working on any of the servers. I’ve tried making my own server and using them but it won’t work then either. Does anyone know why this is and hopefully how to fix it?

I’ll look into it later. Make sure you’re installing the skin correctly.

Hmm, hey, I’d like to join it, yo.

staffers can download the stuff they need from my staff folder via FTP at their leisure, just look for the folder.

I’ve never played the Quakes o_o;; so I’m kinda hesitant about getting this.

Neither did I. Get it. Shooting the crap out of Xelo is fun.

Just don’t get in front of me or you’ll be blown up.

Apart from Merl of course, who is better than me :frowning:

Yeah, just about the best part is fragging Xelopheris and then hearing him cuss you out immediately afterwards :stuck_out_tongue: And Sin, just dl it from my staff folder, and don’t worry about not being used to it. Quake2 is just about the prototypical FPS, so if you’ve had any experience with them at all then it won’t be too bad. Besides, I think FPSes have just about the quickest learning curve of all video games, so just be patient and don’t get too angry if some people start out way ahead of you, it doesn’t take too long to catch up in skill (I don’t think).

Yeah, I can actually take Merl out now without resorting to a BFG :stuck_out_tongue:

I like grenades, and if I wasn’t so tired in the evenings I might actually consider, all I’ve been doing on weekdays lately is watch TV and fall asleep, or talk on the phone/ICQ/AIM
