OK, I finally had the chance to see an episode of the new Fantastic Four animated series, and I thought I’d share my feelings with you people.
First: WHITE costumes? Yeah, I knew about them, and they don’t look bad, and the FF have changed costumes plenty of times, and-
-but they just don’t say "Fantastic Four’ to me. They’re ok, just not… fantastic.
Second: Watch out, you’ll poke someone’s eye out with those 3d graphics! Yeah, I know, all the cool cartoons today have 3d CGI in them. But here, it was everywhere, and it clashed with the 2D animation. In particular, the 2D Thing exercising with giant 3D barbells looked awkward.
-Third: Hey look, it’s the cast of COWBOY BEBOP! No, wait, it’s- the Fantastic Four? I expected them to be done in Anime style -that’s another current fad in American animation- but not this particular, edgier style of Anime. Actually, I kinda like it. Again, doesn’t really feel like the FF I know, but it’s cool.
-Fourth: The story. The episode I saw was based on the old “Reed and Dr. Doom switch minds” story from the comics. Here, they try to explain the switch by using nanotechnology. Still doesn’t make sense, but I’m willing to overlook that as part of the genre.
The important part is- it was WELL WRITTEN. All the characters were in character, and the dialogue was good. Reed was as cool as possible under the situation, but was still shown to be worried. And Susan was the one who figured out who was who. Johnny was perfect, specially when he said, “OK, I’ll fight Reed, but if this is a mistake I want it known it wasn’t my idea.” Ben didn’t say much, but at least they avoided making him go berserk for what (Doom in Richard’s body) said to him. AND he was great saying, “It’s CLOBBERING TIME!” Johnny’s attempts to explain what happened to the TV crew were hilarious- as was Reed’s reaction when he found out that Doom had cancelled all his lectures!
I don’t know if the series follows the movie’s continuity or not, but it’s clear that it is set early in the FF’s career, as Reed and Sue are still pussyfooting around each other. But that’s ok, it’s cute.
All in all, while there are things that bother me about the show (mainly the 3d graphics) I like it so far, and will continue to watch it if the rest of the episodes are written as well.
Favorite Scene: Reed (in Doom’s body) to one of Doom’s Robots: “Self-Destruct! Doom commands it!” And it did!
