SNES games with good music...

I just copied a bunch of roms on to my flash drive to take home, and noticed that, while not enough for any of my remaining roms that need transferring, I still had a couple of free megs on the drive. I decided to download some SPCs to fill the gap and get one more thing off my list of things to start fooling with. Any recommendations will be appreciated. Note that any RPGs with psx versions I probably already have in psf format. I don’t want to just start randomly downloading crap without knowing a few good things to look for.

Terranigma. If you recall, this, for some reason, was a non US release.

Love that underworld theme.

You might want the ROM of that, too.

  • All of the Donkey Kong Country games, specifically 2.

  • Spider Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (the music was done by a band called Green Jelly, and it’s all hard rock stuff.)

  • Earthworm Jim (some of the later level themes are really cool)

  • Mega Man X (X2 and X3 are kind of weak in terms of soundtrack though; all the tracks sound nearly the same, and X3’s boss theme is incredibly monotonous)

  • Super Double Dragon (The main theme is pretty catchy, but I really like the Stage 4 music)

  • Super Adventure Island II (there is a lot of funk type music included with this soundtrack, and the island themes are really nice to listen to)

  • Castlevania IV (the first level theme is really good, and even if the instrumentation seems a little off in some songs, the soundtrack fits the theme really well)

  • Contra 3: The Alien Wars (the music is fast paced and frantic, but in an action packed kind of way)

  • Earthbound (I always found the music to be relaxing. Very nice music to mellow out to)

  • Kirby Super Star (Don’t let the “Kirby” theme fool you; some of the tracks on this soundtrack are truly epic. Every song is incredibly well done.)

  • Mario is Missing (the songs are remixes of the Mario theme for different regions of the world; there’s a Japanese sounding one, an African one, etc)

  • Star Fox (really good space battle themes abound)

  • Super Ghouls and Ghosts (excellent medieval and horror themes)

I’m not going to recommend the FF games and CT, because there are about a million people who will recommend that right away. 8P

Gotta love the song in Saturn Valley!

Der Langrisser is one you must listen to
Romancing Saga 3 has a few really good tracks, although personally I think there’s a lot of purely average ones also.

Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger go without saying, of course. I’d also recommend Demon’s Crest and Super Adventure Island 2.

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/subsites/twistedrpg/images/hero/rirse.gif”> Secret of Mana has some very catchy and remembal tunes. From the tencho Mana Fortress to the eerie but rockish Dark Lich, there are ton of great tunes here. Of course the usual Final Fantasy/Chrono Trigger goes here, but also great is Super Mario RPG.

Not one mention of Actraiser ? For shame ;.;

Other than that, I’ve enjoyed the Fire Emblem 4 - Genealogy of Holy War’s music, nice strategy-rpg themes right there.

Other really good snes STs would be Bahamut Lagoon, Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia, Tactics Ogre, Tengai Makyou Zero, Front Mission : Gun Hazard, Treasure Hunter G, etc…

Most of Square’s works are worth checking out in this regard.

Try these ones:

Der Langrisser
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Chrono Trigger
Romancing SaGa 3
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2 (and fuck MMX3 :P)
Donkey Kong Country 2
Bahamut Lagoon
Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy

Here are some that have a few good tracks here and there:

Secret of Mana
Contra 3
Castlevania 4
Final Fantasy 5
Tactics Ogre
Terranigma
Live A Live
Zelda 3
Darius Twin
Lufia 1
Lufia 2
Rudra No Hihou

Oh yeah, can’t forget Mystic Quest. Castlevania Dracula X and Super Metroid have a few really good numbers too.

Geez, I was going to recommend that game as a joke, I didn’t think anyone would recommend it seriously. >>

Magic Knight Rayearth
Breath of Fire I and II

Isn’t Green Jelly the official worst band ever or something?

The 4 Ganbare Goemon sets are good listenin’, the music for the series is upbeat and quite silly.

Though I’m a bit biased since I’m the one that actually ripped some of those sets ^^
