SaGa Frontier and Tech Learning

Alright, I’ve found some correlations between stats and tech learning. Having a high intelligence score allows you to learn gun techniques really quickly. Case and point: once Blue and Rouge have combined, give Blue/Rouge a gun. He’ll learn a gun technique after every single battle until he has them all. Intelligence obviously affects the rate you learn magic spells at too. However, it does not seem to affect learning sword or fist techniques. Is there a stat that correlates to those? I figured you might know if anyone Ajora =P.

Also, I remember finding the list I’m about to post on GameFAQs- somehow compiled the difficulty levels for learning the various techniques through hacking. Does anyone remember who did this? Please note, NONE of the following stuff is my work in any way shape or form. I take no credit for it.

"I’ve been poking around this game’s executable with a hexeditor again, and I think I’ve found something highly interesting: The data that determines exactly how sword, fighting and dodge skills are learned. It seems to be laid out almost exactly the same as in Romancing SaGa 2 and 3.

However, if the data I’ve found really is what I think it is, there’s a very strange mistake (?) in the data for DodgeGaze. It looks like it’s only possible to learn DodgeGaze from an enemy’s PalsyGaze–CharmGaze, StoneGaze and DeathGaze won’t work. Can someone who has a convenient savegame (say, one where Basilisks currently appear in the Yorkland swamp) test if this is actually true? What I suggest doing is fighting a Basilisk with five Humans all equipped with some means of curing stone status and none of whom already knows DodgeGaze. Just keep healing your party until either someone learns DodgeGaze (which would indicate that my analysis is mistaken) or until the Basilisk runs out of WP (i.e. suddenly stops using anything except basic attacks) If you drain several Basilisks in a row of WP without learning DodgeGaze once (or if several people perform this test once each and none of them succeeds in learning it) then I’ll conclude that my analysis is correct and DodgeGaze really is jacked up.

Yes, I’d do this myself, but (a) I don’t have a suitable savegame on hand, and (b) I’d rather keep hacking rather than playing at the moment so as not to lose my train of thought. I’ll post my (provisional) findings on the board as soon as I can hack up a little program to output the data in human-readable form. Should be an hour or two at most.

Okay, here goes. The move listed at the top of each list is the starting move (i.e. what you actually selected from the menu) The list after it is all the moves you have a chance of learning from that move. The numbers in brackets are the difficulty levels; the higher the number, the more difficult it is to learn that move (or to put it a different way, the stronger the enemy you have to be fighting in order to have the same chance of learning)

…I’m honestly not quite sure why RaySword and Deflect are included twice each. I have a feeling that the second RaySword -> BrightFist entry was originally supposed to be KaiserWing -> KaiserSmash (this derivation is listed in the guidebook but doesn’t actually work in the game) but got mis-entered somehow. I have no idea what the second Deflect -> Kasumi was originally supposed to be.

Now for the Dodge skills. The head of each entry is the name of the Dodge skill, and the following entries are the enemy attacks it’s possible to learn that Dodge skill from along with the difficulty parameters.

160: DodgeDrain

85: StunGaze (16)
85: StunGaze (21)
85: StunGaze (21)

171: DodgeDeathGrip
96: DeathGrip (25)

…you can see that there are two mistakes in the table here. First of all, it’s possible to learn DodgeWing from “DeadlyPowder”. I’m pretty sure that this should have been “HellWing” (technique #1C9h) Since there aren’t many (any?) enemies in the game that use either DeadlyPowder or HellWing it’s not surprising that this mistake was overlooked by the developers.

The second mistake is that for DodgeGaze, instead of each Gaze skill being listed once, StunGaze is listed four times in a row. If we assume that the Gazes were meant to be listed in order (as all the other entries in the table are), then DodgeGaze was meant to be easiest to learn from “CharmGaze” (technique #86h).

Something else I noticed just now. It turns out this data explains why many people have trouble learning both StillStream and TurbidCurrent on the same character. Notice that TurbidCurrent can only be learned from the normal attack of a regular sword (00: Slash), and StillStream can only be learned from the normal attack of a katana (24: Katana). If you only use normal attacks while “levelling up” and you never switch weapons, you’ll only be able to learn one or the other per character, depending on what kind of sword that character’s equipped with."

Thanks to Alex Jackson for all this.

I was always under the impression that WILL affected learning Sword/Fist Techniques. Maybe not though, it’s been a long time since I’ve played SaGa Frontier.

Alex Jackson (AWJ) did all that superduper hacking for the tech learning trees. And I do not think he wants people putting it into any FAQ-type thing yet (if you were planning on doing more with the info than posting it here). He says so in the thread with info was in on the GameFAQs SF board. If you’ve forgotten the thread name, it’s something like “Need you guys to check something out for me” or something along those lines.

Ah, alright, that does make sense- I’ll mess with Will some more then.

Nah, I was just posting it here. I didn’t plan on putting it up anywhere else.

I don’t think he will, Vittles. I divulged that info to Kaggy a few months ago. Don’t worry

And yes, Intelligence DOES effect the rate in which all techs are learned Kagon. Think about it: Why is it that Blue usually learns Life Sprinkler at the end of his scenario, from a normal sword slash every time? Or why people that have the Gilrandy (Sp?) or Cyber Suits equipped, learn techs slightly more frequently?

http://tartarus.rpgclassics.com/staff/sagaf/Status.shtml

My information is also based off the instruction manual…

Intelligence is to Guns and Magic like Strength is to Swords and Guns. It also affects the rate in which all techs are learned.

Will effects WEAPON accuracy, and the strength of techs.

Consequently,

  1. Intelligence affects learning rate along

  2. STR or INT + WIL = Tech Power.
