RPGC Offical Civization 3 Guide (with cheap way to get the game)

As you probably know by now, I am a big fan of the Civization series, and the latest game, Civization 3 and it expansion pack, Conquest (includes Play the World expansion as well) are a excellent group of strategy games. But RPGC doesn’t have many players here. Just me, X2K, and Nulani. But I like to change that image. You see, Cless was able to get Star Craft to be a popular game to play here a while ago, while Merlin got Quake 2 going in the summer. I like to see Civization 3 and it expansion (needed to play online) to be the next big thing here.

But first thing is…how to get the game. Thankfully there is a easy way to get the game and the expansion for cheap. The orignal, Civization 3 can be bought at Go Gamers.com for ten dollars! This is the old vanilla release. No patches or anything, but that can be obtain for free off the web.

Now for the expansion, Conquest. While there was another expansion prior to this called Play the World, it was thankfully included with Conquest for no charge. And just like the orignal, you can get it off the web for 10 dollars at Amazon.com .

Now that you have the games, we would need the patch and some strategy on playing. No problem, as the excellent site, Civization Fanatic has all the info you ever wanted. Now if you plan on getting both of these games, please post here. Pretty soon we will start playing games online against each other. And mods, this is posted here, because the PC Board doesn’t get much traffic and this game would be great to get more players. Ask me here for more questions on the game.

:cool: Nice idea… I’m a big fan of the Civ games too (II was the only game I played on my old PC and I hammer away at III every opportunity I get). I haven’t got play the world because I rarely play online (I can only get on on evenings, which screws me around time-zone wise :thud: ) but that doesn’t stop me from supporting this idea. :hahaha;

It’s funny that you mentioned that. I’ve had Civ3 for a while and I recently got Conquests. Just Diablo II isn’t enough to satisfy my mind, so I really should configure my firewall to play Civ3 online.

I used to play civ a lot when I was young. I was disapointed by a couple things in civ 3: 1-battles were kinda weird. I’ve seen a phalanx slaughter a tank. 2-I miss the actors from civ 2, that was neat. 3- Diplomacy was kinda stilted at times. Civ 3 was pretty nice overall though. I just like going to war and conquering everyone o_o.

I have it and the expansion, but I don’t play it often, I haven’t gotten into the"groove" :stuck_out_tongue:

That was fixed in a patch, because that ****in spearman should NOT BE ABLE TO KILL MY PANZERS!

Mmm Classic Civ: Where a guy with a pitchfork could take on a battleship… and win.

Maybe the spearman was Kal-El in diguise?

that said, teh actors were cool. How DARE they do away with them?

I’m not very fond of Civilization III actually, not when I compare it to Civilization II.

I miss the ability to customize just about everything. I liked making my own units, my own wonders, my own city advances. And my own scenarioes. The only things I like about Civilization III is the influence zone, and all the new victory conditions.

And the actors were cool. The advisors were generally more useful too.

uh, you can make custom stuff in civ 3. It came with an editor… and the editor got even more powerful on the release of PtW (which is in conquests, as if it hasn’t been mentioned).

And I have civ 3 (and conquests), so I’m in, but a 56k connection may run a bit slow (especially since it never connects at full speed, like 28k)

Could someone please sticky this thread for me. I don’t want it to get lost in the shuffle.

Hey, I was one of the biggest Civilization I and II fans ever. Count me in the club, I am getting Civ 3 next week.

It sounds cool, but if we had a massive multiplayer game, it’d take FOREVER to finish.

I just dominate the first Civ I see and make them give me everything they have, then I use their materials to help me conquer the rest of the world.

I usually try to make an early expansion and then create the most advanced civilization in the world and get as many wonders as possible. In the meantime, I try to boost my defenses, and if one of the local bullies tries to raise a ruckus my way, I usually have the conditions to teach him a lesson.

Civ3 is an absolutely amazing game. My father has a copy that I played for a while. Then, he noticed that I had stolen it from the house and demanded I return it.

I would offer to play with you sometime, but my network connection here at school is just about as slow as you can get and won’t let me play games online. :frowning: Sorry.

I might play, but there’s a fair chance that I’d get bored most of the way through the game and forget to keep playing. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m more of a defensive perfectionist if anything. But watch for my nukes… Mwehehehe…

FYI there is an even CHEAPER alternative: www.freeciv.org

Plays like Civ 2. =)

I normally play the same way as Magnus, except for when my army gets so big that it’d be a waste not to use them on someone :mwahaha: There’s nothing quite like the feeling of watching an emperor grovel at your knees…

I play, but I’m horrible at it.
Therefore, I rarely play it on any difficulty level above the easiest.

I need to play Civ3 more sometime. I was absolutely addicted to the first two, but number three didn’t have quite the same allure.
