on thursday i’m leaving for mexico for a missions trip. we’re going to be going down and building a new house in place of one that the other group is tearing down as we post. it’ll be a trip from thursday to saturday or sunday by bus to get down there and then we’ll spend five days there and come back.
last year was great except that the buses were not in…optimal condition. both of them broke down twice and my dad seriously considered buying a new mustang and throwing our stuff in that to finish the trip home. we broke down right in front of the ford dealer.
anyways, hopefully this year will go a lot better than that. last year we spent a night in the roach motel. two rooms with hot water out of eight rooms, roaches randomly falling from water taps and seed vehicles in the parking lot…all with four flat tires. that’s what happens when buses break down in obscure south texas:P
well anyways, wish me luck, pray for me, or just sit back and hope i never come back…whatever you like.
Bring 1 bottle of water for every day you’re in Mexico. Drink that, never take a drink with ice in it or from a fountain and use it to brush your teeth. Also, always close your bags immediately after getting what you needed after opening them.
I did this exact same thing last year. Well, not quite. We were building a house for the Reverend down there, and we stayed at a Mission House with this nice family. Casa Para Christo, they called it. And yes, our bus broke down twice, too. But the thing I remembered most about that trip was the total lack of Mountain Dew in the entire damn country. Drove me crazy.
Out of Curiosity, are you going anywhere in the Yucatan Peninsula? Our group went to a small town called Bacalar. Was nice. Actually had clean water, even though we didn’t drink it anyway.
meh, i don’t think we’ll be anywhere near the yucatan:( we’ll be in a place called Torreon (i don’t know how far over the border). there may have been a severe lack of mountain dew (i noticed that too) but there were these people who would sell us cokes as long as we gave the bottles back. and they had this stuff called manzana sol (apple sun) which was pretty much like carbonated apple cider. that was good stuff.
as for water, last year we went to sam’s and got seven or eight of them huge boxes of water.
and seriously, when i did this last year it was insanely fun. right after lunch we had probly half the kids in the town (small place called san fransisco) would come out and we’d play soccer. due to a very limited control of spanish, we didn’t communicate very well, but it was fun anyway.
