GetBackers is pretty good. Methinks it has the same feel as Trigun.

Both have mechas, and both are serious stuff. I haven’t watched a lot of them though, since I’m not very fond of mecha animes.

For movies I would suggest you get Yotoden (Samurai), Gunbuster (Mech), and Spriggan (Serious). They are three really good movies. You might enjoy, I know I do.
As for series I don’t know any to recommend, other than those already been said.
