i’ve been playing alot of pokemon lately and i want to finish the national dex.
but this is my question…i only have a DS right now, so i obviously need to buy at least 2 GBAs and a cable, so that i can trade hoenn pokemon (R/S/E) to complete that part of the dex.
since you can play Pokemon Red through Crystal (not the remakes, the actual GBC cartridges) on a GBA, can you also trade between them with GBAs? or does the GBA link cable not work? like, do i need 2 GBAs + GBA Link Cable (for Hoenn trades) and 2 GBCs + GBC Link Cable (for Kanto/Johto trades)?
also if i just buy FireRed and LeafGreen, will i be able to catch pokemon 1 - 150 of the national dex? or are theres still some pokemon that are only present on the original GameBoy versions?
and one more thing: FireRed and LeafGreen had the Wireless Adapters for trading. does that mean i cant trade with the normal GBA link cable??? i have to somehow find two wireless connectors also??? and if so, can Ruby/Saphire/Emerald trade using the wireless connectors at least? or do they require a real link cable?
why does this have to be so goddamn confusing. fuck you nintendo for forcing me to buy stupid crap just to finish your pokedex.
There’s actually a Gold/Silver remake coming up, so I’d assume the Pokémon from those games are available in the Global Trading Station once they’ve been out for a while.
The cable will work for FireRed/LeafGreen.
Also: Not really forcing. Get people to trade with. Woo!
Since you didn’t mention it, are you going for the National Dex for R/S/E or D/P/P? That makes a bit of difference for my answer.
For DPP, it’s a bit easier to try and complete the dex since you have the GTS, and you can find various message boards to try and get what you want.
For RBY and GSC, they don’t work with the GBA games and beyond. So you can’t trade between 1st/2nd Gen with 3rd/4th. So for Johto pokes, you’ll need the GC games and probably FR/LG (one of 'em at least). As mentioned, there’s the GS remakes coming out later in the year (or next), so that’ll make things easier.
For the Wireless Adapter, only FR/LG and Emerald work with it. Kinda shitty, but that’s how it goes.
Hopefully, I covered most of everything. Personally, I never bothered completing the National Dex. Too much work. So much easier back in the day…
ah word thanks for all the replies. i didnt know you couldn’t trade from gen 1/2 to 3/4…and the national dex for RSE
i know about HeartGold and SuperSilver or whatever but i havent even dived into Diamond or Pearl yet. i just found a old copy of emerald laying around and started to play it…then got sucked in. when i finish Emerald (and the dex up to that point) i’m going to dive into the DS Pokemons. i cant have too much on my plate anymore or i just give up on it so i’ll get to 4th gen when i get to it.
why would i need GC Colosseum and Gale of Darkness? is that only way to get gen2 pokemon into gen 3/4 until the G/S remakes come out? i actually have GC Colosseum but no GC->GBA cable
If I remember right, (it’s been a while…) FR/LG, the GC games, and Emerald have Gen 2 pokemon in 'em. I know Gale of Darkness has Lugia (only way to get as far as games), and FR/LG and Emerald have 'em in certain places after you beat the main game. Do some research to figure out what to get. Fairly sure Colosseum covers most of the Gen 2 stuff.
Those guys, the Starters, and the cats are the biggest obstacles for completing the Johto generation (the rest are usually seen spread out in the other games).
