Alright, in a few days, a friend and I will be staying up for 72 hours. Why? Tradition, and just…well…just because. We’ve done it for the past two years, but we’ve also been extremely bored because we run out of things to do.
So, our solution: find a couple of epic RPGs that we will be able to work on for those three days.
What I ask of you: What would you suggest as a good, epic, preferably two-player rpg for us? Console: ps2
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a MUST if you want long gameplay.
It’s a strategic RPG, and not since Chrono Trigger has there been a game with so much replay value. The maximum character level is 9999 (I’ve played for over a hundred hours and my main characher is only 300), there’s several different endings, loads of hard optional areas, LOADS of character classes, and every item in the game contains a randomnly-generated dungeon.
It’s not two-player, but I with a game this good, I’sm e you could figure something out.
Xenogears should take about 70 hours… but if you intend to stay awake, then it’s disqualified, due to long stretches of BORING countered by pangs of genious.
If you like tactics games, I second disgaea, however. If you want a two-player game, I know for a fact that FF9 has two-player. Just check the config screen, it’s there, I remember playing it with a friend. Whether it will last all 72 hours depends on whether you stop to smell the roses.
I totally agree with Disgaea. [self plug]I’m the one that got GG hooked on it[/self plug]. However, I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned Dragon Warior VII yet. Any of the Ogre Battle games take a lot of play time too.
Any Final Fantasy game could keep you going for 70 hours or so, but not all of them are multiplayer. Nine definately is, as well as the two that make up Final Fantasy Anthology.
If you want great two player gameplay, you could try Baldur’s Gate. It probably won’t last you 72 hours but it’s great fun in co-op mode.

You can set it up so that the second person can control the NPC allies or import their own character, but you tend to switch the second character quite a bit and you can’t adjust their abilities or weapons.
I’m currently clocking 160+ hours in Final Fantasy X-2 and 200+ hours in Pokemon Ruby (Gameboy Advance game) in both cases due to my stubborn insistence in finding ALL hidden things in the games. (Not yet done with either, BTW. Going to complete X2 tonight; still about 1/4 to go on PKMN.)
I’d have to say Disegaea as well; it’s a great game with seemingly endless hours of game time and some great jokes. Who couldn’t get a laugh out of fighting the Power Rangers or playing baseball with a bunch of killer penguins, and what about the obvious Flash Gordon jokes. Sure it’s a one-player game, but since it’s a strategy RPG then it doesn’t really matter, you can work together to think of the best strategy or you can take turns doing maps. There’s also a very wide range of good strategies, I personally have only a handful of insanely strong characters, but a friend of mine has a bunch of much weaker, but relatively strong characters and he does just as well as I do. It’s worth checking out.

oh well, old email anyways, hardly ever use it
ok, thanks a lot guys for the input…we’ve decided to go the way of FF9…mostly because that’s the only one we could get our hands on for free

I’d go FFXI but it’s not an option. Bust out the old SNES and pop in FFVI. Go two player…in 72 hours you should be able to do just about everything the game offers. Even revive Leo.
