Our official DQ8 appreciation/help thread.

What what what!?!?! Well, what do I get?

My only complaint about the game so far is that stealing doesn’t WORK like 98% of the frikkin time. I spent 1h and a half using it to try and get bunny ears (I need 2) and I got jacksquat. And I KNOW the bunnies near the port town south of Alexandria drop em.

For the rest, it’s pretty awesome so far. My build is

Hero

Sword/Courage, with 3 points in spear for the attack boost, screw boomerang techs, I only use it against random mobs and normal attack + Jessie’s whip = GG mobs.

Yangus

Scythe, once that’s maxed either axes or humanity, but humanity seems kinda sucky.

Jessica: Whips & Staves, because some staff techs are awesome. +50MP while holding a staff, MP regen every round and ressurection to name three. 18 points in Sex Appeal for her passive 1/16 chance every round to charm monsters and they just sit there and do jacksquat.

Angelo: Bows and Staves, he’s primary healer, and I don’t wanna bother getting 2 of every sword, but I think I can manage sharing staves with Jessie a bit, he uses the one a notch below her, not like he HITS with it whenever I have him hold one.

Just mix a Hairclip and a bunny tail in the alchemy pot and you’ll get some bunny ears… What do you need two of them for?

As for the casino, you get slots, bingo, and roulette.

I always played the slots in DQ7. The slots were awesome :D.

I’m making a second DQ8 thread; Us Slime Knights can obtain a bonus 500 mini-medals by reviewing the game, so I’m making a thread for just reviews. 500 mini-medals is one step closer to that Slime branded MP3 player…

Bunny tail, that’s what I meant, really. My brainmeat was not 100% awake when I posted. I want the second to be able to get the bunny suit as soon as I can, cuz I know I won’t want to rehunt again, probably.

How many minimedals for that? You can’t just buy one flat out?

No, you can’t buy anything, unfortunately, you have to have minimedals. The mp3 player is f-ing expensive, so I’ll probably just stop at a plushie and a t-shirt. BTW, I changed my mind about that seperate thread, so I just made a reader review for SK’s capsule review section. I’ll let him link it later, but I went ahead and uploaded it: http://www.rpgclassics.com/reviews/read/dq8_sat.shtml

I’ll check out your review later Sat… I’m busy playing!
How many mini-medals do you have, anyway? I’m only around 17000.

edit - Does anyone have a list of alchemy pot recipes he’d like to share or know of a list that already exists tht’s not cluttered with junk?

But Lufia 2 came out quite awhile ago. It doesn’t speak much for DQ8 to still be structured like a 10 year old game. DW1 is entirely fetch (get all Erdrick’s equipment and beat the dragon lord), but it is also old, so it not having more evolved play is understandable. It is just that standards change over time. I like Lufia 2 too, but the context is also important. It is also disappointing to go to fetch quests after having a nice involved adventure in the previous game(s).

Old school, Info. That says it all.

But DW7 was old school and it still had interesting quests and stuff. DQ% and DQ6 were also pretty interesting. It just seems like all I’m doing is fetch quests up until the final battle.

I’d say DQ7 was very fetchy.

Dragon Quest, as a series, is based in tradition. While there are a lot of fetch quests, they all lead to proceed the story (which is more than I can say about online RPGs like WoW or FFXI, which are entirely grinding and fetch quests, but are amongst the highest selling games in the world).

Wow DQ8 is absolutely amazing. I’m going boomerangs on the hero. I’ll get some courage and some spears for bosses.

I took most of Wednesday off to play the game, and I played it some this morning, too. I’m at around level 22, and I just started the king of Ascantha’s emotional healing, which was absolutely beautiful. The skill points are coming in faster for some than for others. Yangus has 60-something in Scythe, 21 in Humanity, and 2 in Axe. The hero, on the other hand, only has about 55 in sword and 7 in Courage, or something like that. Both Jessica and Angelo are concentrating on the staff. I keep a boomerang on the hero, and a sword in the bag to switch to when I want to use Metal Slash. Yangus uses the Scythe (and destroys stuff, I must say), Jessica has a whip (Scale whip, I think - made it in the pot), and Angelo just picked up a bow in Ascantha.

I really want to take some time out to make Zero jealous by saying I stole a bunny tail on my third try from a bunnicorn. I found my second one in a chest on the world map.

The game is incredible so far. Although it is easier than most other DQs, I’ve ended up dieing more by going after the special monsters before I could handle them (hasn’t been a problem since I ran across the metal slimes and levelled up). The Axoraptor near Farebury and the Golem between the one port and the Maella Abbey wiped me out.

For the record, I may or may not have cried when I heard the DQ theme playing at the title screen. I’m not telling.

Dude, RPT, have Jessie focus on whip till she gets Twin Dragon, it is just an amazing tech. I don’t find staves to be that good as a primary anyway, they’re more of a secondary for bosses for me.

Also, MUCH HATE. Signed, Zero.

(I got a tail in a chest and another in Pickham, so I’m good for now.)

I’ve actually found DQ8 to be harder than the others. Altough, that difference might be attributed to the fact that I’m past Ascantha and Pickham (I’m doing the thing for Red) and my highest levels are 19 for the Hero and Yangus.

Whips it is, then.

I’ve got whips on Jessica and axes on Yangus. It works quite nicely. Also, either Jessica’s shirt defies the laws of gravity or her tits generate their own gravitational field. Its just SO funny. I loved the bar fight in simpleton.
