Modem user = using the phone line.

Regular use of the phone = huge phone bill.

Huge phone bill = Seraphim can’t use the net at home for a year.

Sad, but true.

Well, I do make exceptions. If you cannot easily go to a store and find it, then Napster away. I did use it to find some old Zelda cartoons once.

Zelda cartoons? That sacrilege? I already thought it was stupid when I still liked power rangers.

Just like when your favorite aging first generation punk band reunites and goes on tour financed by a major corporate sponsor, or when “extreme” whatever becomes a buzzword in clothing and soda commercials.

Smells Like Co-Option.

“Hey there! Remember the halcyon days of your rebellous youth? Well guess what, for a price, you can purchase a watered down, co-opted, neutered and carefully controlled facsimilie of the good old days of standing up to the man, and this time, your money goes straight into their pockets, strengthening and further entrenching the system you hated and fought against in the first place! Obey Your Corporate Slavemasters, and Happy Listening!”

This is why we love Kaiser, and if you disagree I’m ripping your heads off.

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> CDs here are 30 euros each.
All CDs here suck.
Importing CDs adds another 30 euros.
More if it’s rare or hard to come by.
I have no job.

So unless you’re willing to give me 90 euros per CD (which is very close to the price of a Gamecube), the record companies can kiss my shiny metal ass. I do feel kinda bad about the artists though, but I’m sure I’ll be able to support them with SOMETHING eventually… I doubt they get more than 10% of 1 CD anyway.

That’s not true. Tours are a promotional mechanism only for most artists. Sure, some artists can fill stadiums no matter where or when they tour, and they’ll make money, but most artists, even relatively well-known ones with a good amount of fans, will lose money or barely break even on touring. For them, touring is a way to promote the album, spread word about it, get some publicity, and thus increase record sales, which then will hopefully be greater than the costs they incurred while touring.

I doubt they get more than 10% of 1 CD anyway.
Fine, but if you don’t buy the CD, they get zero. Even a nickel per CD is still better than zero.

I’ll support this. This summer, there was a summer slam fest here in Timmins. Swollen Members, Sum 41, and a few others. Most of them lost quite a few Gs, since we’ve only got a population of 40 000, and our park can’t even hold 1 000. At $20 a ticket, that’s 20 grand for (I think) 5 bands in total. 4 Grand does not cover transportation for an entire band + equipment + room and board.

Furthermore, a few years back, there was a Shania Twain concert here. The city went about 50 grand in debt thanks to it, because Shania set down a price with the city.

There are plenty of sharing clients, what has it got that the others don’t? And its usually not a very good idea to give out a credit card number over the internet.

pish posh, if you do it over a secure server it’s fine. And what does this one have? Anti-sue-ness built in.

Thanks for saying that SK. Now I don’t feel stupid being the only one being against this.

If that were true people would be downloading whole discs at a time instead of separate, carefully chosen single songs.

I do download entire discs at a time.

And Napster can kiss my poor white Kazaa Lite using ass.

About the money artists get on CD’s and shows: tours represent most of the income of most of the major bands. A big famous band may keep 20-40% of the profit of a show. And they’re getting more cereative when it comes to making money in shows too. Last time I checked, Kiss was selling tickets for the first line for US$ 1000, which is 8 times more expensive than the regular ticket - and people pay for it. People also pay to take photos with the artists, hang around for some time with them etc. I even read about a woman who would take her groom to the first line of a Kiss show and then hang around, take photos, get autographs etc with them in the backstage, and she was paying really big for it. It’s not an isolated case. Many people with some $$$ to spend are doing these things. It’s a new way for artists to make some profit.

I don’t know how much an artist gets per sold CD in US or Europe, but here in Brazil a famous artist said he’d get some US$3300 if he sold 100,000 discs. He also said he makes at worst six times as much in a single show. I think it’s not much different there.
