You know, it’s funny. Codemasters (a European company) used to have the market on this stuff with Game Genie. Then, Datel (another European company) came around with Action Replay, and knocked Game Genie off the market. Then Interact (an American company) bought the rights to Action Replay, and sold it in America as GameShark. Blaze (a European company) came around with Xploder, and Pelican (an American company) made Code Breaker. Then, Interact went out of business, and the GameShark name was bought by MadCatz. MadCatz didn’t have the license from Datel to use the Action Replay hardware, so they made their own original cheat device, as Datel released Action Replay, under its original name, in the US. Now, in America, we have four different cheat devices, all of which use different codes.
I’d say, just get an Action Replay. As far as modern stuff goes, they seem to work the best.
The MadCatz GameShark is a piece of garbage. They actually made the interface worse then the older versions (the playstation game shark that I have is awesome). As for cheating, I used a gameshark to get through the latter portion of FFX. Now, not because I was having any trouble, I could have beat the game without cheating, but it was just so god damn tedius, and I didn’t enjoy playing it (really, why couldn’t they have just given the entire party experience, it was so boring and tedius having to swap everyone in to take an action every battle to keep my party at an equal level), so I just wanted to get the damn thing beat so I could start FFX-2.
Are the latest versions of Game Shark or Action Replay backwards-compatible? I read that there are multiple versions. Do the latest ones work with older systems (for ex. the PS2 ver. works on the PSX and stuff like that)?
The newer Action Replays (and GameSharks, I believe) come with a second disc for PS2 that works with PS1 games. However, this second disc doesn’t work in PS1 systems. You’d have to get a PS1 Action Replay/GameShark for that.
Until MadCatz bought GameShark, GameShark worked with Action Replay codes. Now that MadCatz made their own device called GameShark, it only works with it’s own proprietary codes. So, they’re not compatible with each other, if that’s what you were asking (I don’t think it was, but I thought I’d throw it out there just in case).
Heck, you could even bring back Aeris and Sephiroth (if you don’t mind Sephiroth acting on his own as he did on Mt. Nibel, of course.) It’s pretty fun to fool around with.
I hope you don’t mind me asking but, how powerful was Sephiroth anyway did he have some limit on damage? or could he be beaten for that matter.
I don’t think he had a limit bar but he always evaded attacks. But…puah, Cloud or any other character alone with the right materia (ie my save file’s setup: ultimate weapon, 4xslash or Flash, Master Magic+All or MP absorb, Master Summon+MP absorb if you want, Master Command, Hp and MP plus at master level, mastered Enemy skill, mastered Speed Plus and Luck plus) is 1000 times better. And you can do it without any cheating device (like I did*). You’re not losing anything unless you like how Seph looks. The legendary demi-god one-winged meteor-summoning omfgwtf angel of ultimate pwning Sephiroth is a total pussy wuss loser if you train enough. You can walk all over his ass, trust me.
*Sorry if it sounds like shameless boasting but I’m writing it this way to prove you that it can be done through conventional means.
Frankly, anyone who’s got that amount of time to waste is better off just using Gameshark and then going and doing something useful, like helping feed the poor. Geesh.
I have a Game Genie for my SNES. I used it to play FFVI (Well, a FFIII cartridge) a couple of times. I used the “Paladin Shield” code which gave you a crap load of rare items after every battle. Every so often a Paladin Shield would pop up, hence the name.
The funny thing is that I never actaully finished FFVI until I got FF Anthologies for my PSX. I always got bored of it somehow. I’m really glad I did though, because I got great satifaction completing it without any cheats. Well, I did level like crazy, but I’m a perfectionist of sorts.
When I was playing FF8 for the first time, I had just gotten to Disc 3, when me and some friends were messing around with the GameShark, seeing what we could accomplish (like starting the game with 100 Full-lifes, 100 Deaths, 100 of whatever others spells were good that I don’t remember, and all the GFs, fully stocked). Out of habit, my friend saved the game… right over my save file…
I almost never played the game again, but my friend had just gotten to the same point in the game that I was at, so I copied his save. Of course, he had shittier equipment and items, but that’s just what I had to deal with… -_-
Everyone has a few free hours during the day. During those hours they are free to do whatever they like. I liked playing FFVII. And I fought those jumping balls with an AP gain boosting materia and mastered other materia in no time.
And trust me, I don’t need to study any more time than I already do.
You guys were talking about Final Fantasy Tactics before. That wasn’t released in Australia was it? If it was I would love to get my hands on a copy of it.
Tatics is only Japan and US, It was never released in PAL, And therefore Not in UK or Aus. Tatics Advance, a differnt game to Tatics, should be Availible in Aus since it’s GBA and WE’ve got it in the UK.
I never realized that. Fortunately, the price of the US version has dropped to around $12.99 USD (which, with the plummeting value of the USD, should mean that every english speaking nation should be able to import it for dirt cheap), and it’s somewhat easy to play imports in a PlayStation (thanks to the swap trick). Of course… I’ve never tried to play games from a different frequency television. Does anyone know if the swap trick allows you to play NTSC games on a PAL PlayStation and vice versa?
I don’t know what you mean by “swap trick”, But Our PS1 and 2 can play NTSC games with cheat devices, My old PS1 had it built in, My TV on the Other Hand was old and cheap and couldn’t display it properly, but my other TV has no trouble with the diferent standard from a scart or Yellow red White leads. I’d Import it but I’m short on cash and My PS2 is a New Thin one.

Most Capcom and Namco and Nintendo games now have a 60Hz option.
