Miyazaki DVDs Release Date

The release date has been reconfirmed as February 22, 2005 for the next wave of three Miyazaki DVDs from Disney, but there’s been a slight change in line-up. Originally they were going to release Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Porco Rosso, and My Neighbour Totoro; however Totoro has been delayed for some reason, and in its place is The Cat Returns. Any thoughts on this?

Uhhhhh, they already have Totoro in English on a DVD? Besides, those are all ones I haven’t seen so cheers! :toast:

I haven’t seen any of those, so yae. Just in time for a bunch of birthdays too. ^^

Totoro’s already been released by Fox previously, but apparently they didn’t renew their copyright, or something, so this would be a different version. I did hear one theory that Disney delayed their copy because the Fox versions are still stocked in stores, so people would probably buy that as it’s cheaper. Don’t know for sure, though…

Nausicaa’s my favourite Miyazaki, so I hope you enjoy it! It was also one of Miyazaki’s first movies, and the one used to fund the creation of Studio Ghibli!

Very basic summary: “Nausicaä, the princess of a small nation, lives in a world devastated by a holocaust called the “Seven Days of Fire”. She tries to stop other warring nations from destroying themselves and from destroying the only means by which their world can be saved from the spread of polluted wastelands.” (Nausicaa.net)

Porco Rosso’s pretty good, too, if a bit surreal. But it has a lot of humorous moments.

Very basic (and amusing!) summary: “Porco Rosso (the Japanese title Kurenai no Buta literally means “The Crimson Pig”) was first planned as a 30-45 minutes in-flight movie on Japan Airlines. It’s been described as “a movie which tired businessmen on international flights can enjoy even with their minds dulled due to lack of oxygen.” As Miyazaki’s imagination took off, it became a feature-length movie about an Italian Air Force pilot who left the service due to the rise of fascism. He became a bounty hunter, assuming the name ‘Porco Rosso.’” (Nausicaa.net)

Additionally, he chose that name because he somehow got himself turned into a humanoid pig. It’s never really explained… ^_^;

I’ve never actually seen The Cat Returns, so I’m looking forward to it! It’s only a Miyazaki film in the loosest sense of the term… He was executive producer, but not actively involved in the creative process. It’s a loose sequel to another Ghibli film Whispers of the Heart, but as the connection is through two cats, I doubt you need to see the first to understand it.

Very basic summary: “The movie follows Muta (the fat cat in Whisper of the Heart) and Baron (also from Whisper) as they set out to rescue a young girl named Haru who has wandered into the world of cats.” (Nausicaa.net)

I hope you guys enjoy them!

I read that August 05 for the Uk. For good Anime it take 6 mounths since Us release to a UK.

Big Nutter
It’s Still worth the wait though.

I’m a bit disappointed that Totoro is not included there, cos I would’ve wanted the subbed version of that, since I’ve already seen cat. On the other hand, Cat hasnt been released here yet, so It’s probably the better deal.

Miyazaki didnt even have much or anything to do with Cat. I think he just had some production credit.

Ouch! That’s a long time to wait BN! But you’re right about it being worth it…

Yeah, Miyazaki only had executive producer on this one. While that’s an important role, it doesn’t really cause me to classify the movie as a ‘Miyazaki’. It’s still a Ghibli movie, though, which is just as good.

I’ve seen/read all of these save Cat, so I’m glad that one’s coming out here.
