Melee Mage?

I think its possible. Such mage would lack ranged spells, but would specialize in Short-Ranged Melee-like spells, that could include things like a blade of Fire, a Diamon Dagger, a Force shield, a Freezing spell, a Light Saber, and “Mage Armor” . Feel free to give good spells idea for such a class.
It look like a Fighter/Mage Dual class, but rather that class (I would make it a Prestige Class) would rather exclusivly using magic at short range, using it as a weapon instead of mundane objects. What a Fighter look like if he was a mage? mmm

Now we’ll have to try mixing up the Mage and the fighter in one.
Our class must be more tough in battle than a normal mage, that for sure. He must take more hits. Much like a Fighter. The class main stat will still be Int, since his power comes from spells. Dex will also be important, cause it improves AC. Should concentrate a little bit less on Wisdom and more on Constitution. Constitution will become really important.

The Class should give Profiency with Armors, at least Medium ones. It would reduce the chance to miss the spell. And the spells should be quicken, so that be a good feat to take too. Take the feat that removes the need for somatic compenents and maybe you can go fight by a Fighter’s side with ease.

Still need improvements, but I find the idea great

I never thought of making a melee mage, because the spells I use are ranged. But, if equipped with magically enhanced equipment, I suppose it could work.

I think ranged mages are better, but I still say either one COULD work

Have fun.

True Strike, Shocking Grasp, Burning Hands, things like that. I’d probably make new spells for that class though. I’m thinking of making a new world with new, modified spells and stuff like that.

I thought that the reason why mage’s couldn’t wear any types of armor (besides of mage armor of course) was because the restriction of armor impeded their ability of wielding magic (I’m not sure how it went exactly but me and my friends had a discussion on why mages couldn’t use armor). I suppose if there were specially (yet very hard to acquire) items available that enabled the melee mage to wear it like a specialized made leather armor or perhaps specialized elven chainmail(elven chainmail is pretty much magical by itself and it’s so lightweight that you can practically wear it under clothes without anyone noticing). But still, there would have to be some disadvantage or restriction for a melee mage cuz ya at least wanna keep it balanced or else it would be like a 2nd core rules edition cleric (I thought they were the most unbalanced of all the basic classes during that time)

What you’re talking about is basically a cleric, they have good HP, concentrate on melee combat and healing skills, and wear heavy armor.

Close, but not quite DS.
The Clerics have Melee combat (with weapons) and healing spells, I want Melee combat (With weapon-like spells) and offensive/supportive spells. No physical damage.

Right, you want melee type spells, like Flame blade and its variations. There are also spell like items such as the Staff of serpents where the head of a staff becomes a snake. Heat/chill metal, those are all clerical type magics, if you want to make a melee spell caster you should make a cleric, mages are just too week and there’s no justification for increasing their hit points dramatically when you could just take a cleric of mystra and get almost the same effect.

Besides, Cleric’s suck if you want to eventually level up to god-hood. If you want to challenge a god, you can’t, because your god can strip you of all of your powers should you anger him.

Please, to all of those who assume i’m a power gamer for saying that, just don’t flame me. Ask Roun, i’m not usually a power gamer.

Good point Atherelius, but I would think if were a cleric and wanted to challenge a god (what compells one to have such an insane and suicidal motive I have no idea) I would think that if ya challenged a god that were foes with the deity you serve then I would think your deity would give you something extra than strip you of it (let’s say you’re a priest of Selune and you wanted to challenge Shar, her arch nemesis, or rather Cyric since most of the pantheon that serve on the side of good hate him anywayz).

Well there is one deaty where its always possible for a cleric to attain godhood with, Mistra. Of course that requires the character to be female, but there’s a new Mistra every few thousand years, if I recall correctly the Mistra in forgotten realms is the 3rd or 4th Mistra depending on when the story takes place.

There is a prestige class that do excatly just that in one of the class-specific books things. The Spellsword or somethin’.

Got some nifty abilities.
