Just got back from the local corporate run independant theatre, where I saw March of the Penguins. It’s a documentary done by the National Geographic Society, and was narrarated by Morgan Freeman. The music was incredible, and the cinematography was jaw dropping. The south pole is really an amazingly beautiful place. I’ll admit, though, that when they showed the little baby penguins being born, and taking their first steps, a seven year old girl inside of me started squealing with glee.
So, so far that’s three for three when it comes to good movies I saw this week; Howl’s Moving Castle, Land of the Dead, and March of the Penguins. I don’t think those movies could possibly be more different from each other. I’m going to go see Undead tomorrow night.
March of the Penguins is damn cool. Did you see the other movie done by these guys about birds? It’s about just a little less good and about bird migration.
I saw the preview for this when i saw Howl, and i was like, WTF? It just seemed like a really Imax-y movie to me. I guess i’ll see it then, if its so good It did look intriguing.
And did you like howl’s moving castle? I thought it was ok, but too rushed and nowhere NEAR as good as his other movies.
They showed this on the news…talked about it I mean. The French director who made it said that the greatest part of it was Morgan Freeman’s narration. Hearing him on War of The World’s, it makes it obvious that Morgan Freeman has some skill in the area.
Well, it’s not going to appeal to you if you’re not the type to enjoy National Geographic stuff. But, if you are, it’s awesome. Also, if you’re a photographer/cinematography student or something, it’s worth seeing it for the visuals. They did this awesome stop-motion effect with the aurora australis.
And, as for Howl’s, I really dug on it. I thought it was awesome. I’m pissed off right now, cause we were going to go see another zombie movie tonight, and it’s only playing in NYC, LA, and Ft. Lauderdale… -_-
I haven’t seen anything about it here in Australia… but it sounds good, so I’ll see if I can dig something up about it. NG stuff is always really interesting!
Hey, you’re in Australia! Have you seen the movie “Undead?” I hear it’s an Australian flick, and me and my friends intended in seeing it tonight, but unfortunately it wasn’t playing in our area. If you’ve seen it, is it worth waiting for?
Omnimax theaters (which were just called “Omni” theaters back before IMAX bought them) used to be all that was in Dallas, but they’ve since opened up two IMAX theaters (one is domed, but not called an “Omnimax”). IMAX and Omnimax theaters used to only appear in museums and related locations, thus the focus on educational films, but now, at least in Dallas, IMAX has teamed up with Cinemark to create the IMAX Cinemark, which shows IMAX quality (and size) versions of movies like Star Wars Episode III, Batman Begins, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You’ll notice at IMDB that occasionally when you look up movies, you’ll see alternate titles like “Batman Begins: The IMAX Experience.” Those refer to the IMAX versions of their films.
I visited the Omnimax at the St. Louis Science Center when I was still in grade school…the screen was HUGE, man. Big enough that it takes up all of your peripheral vison, making you feel like you’re in the picture. The flight scenes were awesome.
