If this were purely an idealist pursuit, I could understand it, but the person quoted in the article speaks wisdom:

Saw this on 4chan (prior to my b&), and just finished reading it. I think it was a good read, and kind of creepy. The weird thing that I noticed is that the last entry is back in 2001, after saying “once we’re out again, we’ll inform you all immedietly”. There hasn’t been an update. :S

The point is, they can hardly make an emotional appeal on an issue like this and expect sympathy, and if the perception is that they’re doing it entirely out of self interest they won’t be able to present a case that makes objective sense (if they even have one).

I often use the analogy in every day conversation that something uncommon is like “trying to go online without encountering profanity.” For example, when my friend goes to Taco Bell and expects his order to be correct, I might say “expecting your order to be right at Taco Bell is like expecting to go online without encountering profanity.” In that vain, I say that your attempt to go online without encountering profanity is like trying to go online without encountering profanity. I don’t know any clearer way to put it, but this is the internet.
(for the record, sometimes I replace “profanity” in that analogy with “pornography.” Both are accurate)
