How the heck does a book that’s been around for less than five years qualify for a best-of-all-time list?
I’m not surprised, even if it is WRONG! >:(
My dear lord! Something actually beat Harry Potter? Someone up there has just answered my prayers! Laughs

Because kids are stupid and have given into the Harry Potter mass hysteria without even realizing that they’re not that great
Woo, Hitch Hikers Guide made number 4 too.
Aside from the fact that I read the first Harry Potter book and didn’t particularly like it, a recent book shouldn’t even have the opportunity to be voted on as a best-of-all-time book, regardless of how good it is.

Sounds right.
Yeah I watched it, ot was funny where they did this bit where people constructed weird but coherent sentences by reading out seperate lines from the top 5. Psh Goblet isn’t even the best one anyway.
Except that this is UK’s best LOVED book. In this case, I’d say its accurrate.
Whoo- Dark Materials made it up there!

Fixed.
hrm haven’t read hitch-hiker’s. Is it a book worth buying or borrowing?
I dunno about you, but Harry Potter’s books were somewhat good. I know I enjoyed them. And who cares of hysteria – it make kid read. And reading is good, you can’t argure against that.
I, personally, enjoyed teh HP books, although I’m dismayed at the hysteria and merchandising… that killed Pokemon.
Oh well. It’s not like I’m in the UK. But I sitll enjoy the HP books.

I bet that when you were a sixth grade you liked whatever was a trend.
Same happens with this things, Harry Potter turned to be a trend, and they started to like it, same happened with LOTR.
I did read the entire HP and LotR saga ( I also read The Silmarillion + The Hobbit), I enjoyed them, but I can’t say they were all “omfg gud wtf lawlz”
I enjoyed the unique H.P Lovecraft book I’ve read until now, and some Agatha Chritie’s books, WAY more than LotR and shit, but meh, maybe I just have an horrible taste in literature ;>.>
Interesting list. It’s kind of weird seeing Pride and Prejudice up there surrounded fantasy/sci-fi.
I enjoyed Harry Potter immensely. There’s some real storytelling skill in there. Maybe it’s not genius literature, but I thought they were great reading. Not sure if I would say I loved it more than LOTR, though.
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is really a classic, and one that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it’s pretty funny.
I’m gratified to see a bunch of Terry Pratchett books in the top 100, too. Unfortunately I can’t find the top 21 on that site anywhere so I dunno if he made it there.
Mwaha! I love the LOTR books
It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the Harry Potter books, I just wanted to see if any other book could beat it to the top of the charts in the UK. And it’s all good, too! LOTR is great!!
…I have no idea about all those other ones, though…Never heard of 'em…

His Dark Materials should have made number 1 :/. I noticed that Simon Tolkein didn’t look very happy last night, even though his grandfather won.
