How do make a sprite?

I want to make my own sprites but I have no clue how. Heelp??

You could do like I did with my VERY EARLY SPRITE, and make it in DOS… “Beware, I am ready to twist again, Retrostyle!”

Or just grab a bunch of pre-existing sprites (HEAVENS NO, NO MORE MEGAMEN) and edit them as you wish, “I’m based on Kazuki from Samurai Showdown 4! With a Blue palette and White Vest instead of red! I also don’t have a flaming sword!”

FF sprites are pretty nicely easily edited, and paint can get the first edits done. Other programs shouldn’t be counted out, though.

Speaking of which, I was wondering how the shading was done on sprites (such as <img src=“http://cala.nulani.net/images/calastand.gif”> mine).

I once recoloured, changing the colour of each individual pixel to a different colour with the same shade, its painful to the eyes.

Where do I grab these sprites… I’m so blonde…sorry…

You’re only as blonde as you feel you are. Don’t worry; when I was your age, I didn’t even know what an emulator was!

Anyway, sprites can be found on various webpages such as the RPG Icons Archive, or GIF Goodness. A better alternative that offers more choice is to screencap one yourself. Just run an emulator (ZSNES most likely) until you see the one you want. Now, turn off all background layers by pressing 1, 2, 3, and 4 and maybe also 5 on the keyboard (this should leave you with only the sprites on the screen.) If you accidentally wipe out a part of the screen you want back, just hit the corresponding key to bring it back.

Now, press the screencap button (you might have to set it to something, mine’s SPACE) and then open the folder with the ROM. The picture is there! Now just cut the sprite out of it, do the transparency thing, and voila!

And for the love of all that is holy and good, please, please, PLEASE no more Megaman sprites!

I HATEmegaman with a passion. And I don’t know what an emulator is and I haven’t the eq to screen cap.

Looking at the sprite, it seems like it was shaded after the image was scaled up in size, which is why some of the shading looks different, and not pixelly.

If I were making a sprite, I’d probably shade it using an airbrush tool, then scale it down to the right size, then dither it to the right pallete. And hope that it looked good.

On an only marginally related note, I just found out that my avatar doesn’t look right on some browsers (though it looks right on mine). It is supposed to have a transparent background, but on some browsers it doesn’t. I was hoping to fix the problem by converting it from a png to a gif, but I don’t have a program to do it. Can anyone here do it, or tell me where I can find a program that does it (under Linux)?

EDIT: I found a program, and so my avatar is now a gif.

Transparency…thing???
I may not be blonde, but I am stupid.

and there are too many Megaman sprites anyway :noway:

I dont know, how DO make a sprite?

Edit: Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Uhh… This thread is from like last year. We gotsa necro.

Esh. Several Ways. I used some software from http://charas-project.net/ called Chara.EX, (there is a online version at the same site), and I then used a gif editing software to Create the Transparent background for web use.

The Backgound on Me was pink, before he Finished with me. I had a Pink Box around me.

Emulator - makes a PC pretend it a console like NES or GBA. Zsnes being one for the SNES using Windows or Dos. A site for Emulators for several consoles and operating systems is Zophar’s Domain

Lunix, under the Unix section, or so a pengiun in a red hat told me.

So…basically either get a sprite or rip one, then open up Paint and the sprite and edit it by pixels? How can you add a good sword or something that way though?..

Stealing it from another sprite/game and adding it accordingly. Or by making your own.

How do you add it from another sprite, and make it look natural though? Sorry for the stupid questions, just really new at this.

Careful manliplination, and Trail and Error. Take My staff, the earlier post it was behind my back, now it’s in my hand. I had about 3 goes before I got this.

Yup, or altering the Pallete that the Picture uses for recolours. Dave (Author!) from Bob and George say he does it with Paint. Check out his FAQ’s.

Thanks. I’ll check that out…before I read your post though, I didn’t exactly think that was a staff because of it’s placement… :noway:

I’m use both sprites in one of my games. The one with the Staff on the back is the normal Walking sprite and staff down, when I’m attacking outside the battle. (ie, in the story) The Resaltion of the game is not high.
