Help with DOS games?

As the name implies, I’m trying run some old DOS games. In this case, I’m trying to run a copy of Chexquest I found. I got the game to start up fine, but the animation was jerky in some parts.

I tried downloading this program called dosbox that was supposed to help, but all it did was make the game run even jerkier.

I’m not used to messing with these old games. Could anyone offer me some feedback?

did you try playing around with the settings in dosbox? It is distributed with the cycles setting extremely low. If your machine can handle it try firing it up in dosbox with cycles set somewhere between 10000 and 20000 and see what happens. Also try messing with VDM Sound.

Getting dos games working on a newer computer can be a bit of a pain in the ass, so be prepared to have to try a lot of things.

Use D-Fend, it’s a dosbox front end, which makes it a billion times easier to screw with settings.

Thank you very much for the help.

I just tinkered with the sound settings a bit and everything runs fine. Granted, there’s no sound effects, but eh, I can live with that.

@Epic: I think I’ll look into that, I can’t make heads or tails of dosbox.
