Just get one of the long/high replay value ones (FFTA, Harvest Moon, Sword of Mana.) That should give you plenty of playing time until you have enough cash for more games.
I actually like Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis. It’s class system was unique, in that you had to do certain things to be able to change into a certain class.
Oh god, I love TO:KoL. It’s definitely my favourite GBA game to date. CtM really needs to send me the cart already…
I’d so love a new OB on the PS2 or GC.
In point of fact, I’ve played most of that on emus … and I forgot to put some Sonic games and Pokemon R&S on the list. Er, anyway, it looks like I’ll be leaning towards Sword of Mana or one of the Pokemon games … decisions, decisions …

That was my first GBA-game and my best I’ve ever played!!
I’d really liked to play one of the other parts of the Ogre Battle-series, but none of them is released in Germany…
For some odd reason I never got into the OB series, and surprisingly, TO:KoL wasn’t an exception, despite how much they packed into a GBA cart, AND it’s being closer to FFT than it was to the other OBs.
If you want tactics games, get FFTA first, fire emblem is a little on the hard side.
Metroid Fusion, Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis, Fire Emblem; all great games.
Oh, and don’t forget Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Dragon Warrior 3. It may just be a GBC game, but it’s probably better than anything on the GBA.
Or Phantasy Star Collection, if you want something that’ll keep you busy for a while.
Everything else people mentioned is also a good choice, with the possible exception of Golden Sun, which I really didn’t like.
Actually, I’ll stick with the emulated versions of the PS games (until the Playstation 2 remake of PS1, PS2, and PS4); for one thing, the sound is better.
Hiryuu, my first handheld game was Dragon Warrior 3. I should have mentioned that one sooner. =)
It holds a special place in my memory.
- Golden Sun
- Lufia
- Golden Sun: LA
- Sword of Mana
- Fire Emblem
Out of that list of games, I’d suggest FFTA. Get it if you have a lot of time on your hands. But the Golden Sun games are really good too!
Fire Emblem ++
