I still don’t see what makes WoW so awesome, except the whole OMG IT"S BLIZARD!#OI!U#(*!NM!#&(#&!( mentality. I’ll try it out if there’s a free trial or something, but meh.
Besides just looking like a good mmorpg, that IS the point, it’s Blizzard. Have you played a BAD blizzard game? Now, I know you may have played one you didnt LIKE, but was the game BAD? Probably not. Thats the moral of the story kids. Blizzard = Good Games, so why NOT get OMFG LOL BBQ excited over a Blizzard MMORPG?
Because I’m not a drooling Blizzard fanboy and buy/play games which offer me something I’m interested in, not because some random company made it. It looks like a solid MMORPG, but it doesn’t look like anything OUTSTANDING. It has no “own” thing, like RO’s sickenly cute graphics or FFXI’s very interesting job/subjob system, or City of Heroes insane character creator. It’s just an MMORPG with elves, dwarves, paladins and hunters. The only unique thing it seems to have is the Blizzard logo.
Well, only time can tell, playing the game first hand is the only REAL way to tell if it has the goods that will make it worth buying. Considering that EQ has really dated graphics and can still deliver somthing that NO other MMORPG has attempted as far as gameplay, there is a good chance that Blizzard will bring somthing unique to the MMORPG table that other games have glanced over or not payed enough attention to. And, NO, I’m not a Blizzard fanboy, Im just stating that there isnt a bad Blizzard game out there. Look at the sales records and you’ll see the proof you need. And there’s a good reason so many fanboy/girls follow blizzard anyway.
So yeah, I’ve been playing it… and not only is it more stable AS A BETA than most MMORPGS on the market, its fun, fucking fun. I cant stress enough how unique the style is to other mmorpgs, and you REALLY feel like you are in the world of Warcraft 3. So yeah, if you guys arent fans of WC3 then you probably wont like the game, thats just fine, there are ways to entertain yourself besides this game, like for instance a revolver in your mouth. That works wonders.
I never stated you all are, and I already said I’ll try it out if I don’t have to pay for it. I said that the only thing it has that differentiates it from GENERIC MMORPG is the Blizzard logo, and purchasing a game for no other reason than the fact that it’s made by X company kinda is a fanboy attitude
I’m curious, how is it unique from other MMORPGs in your eyes Iz? And are there any totally badass gameplay aspects?
Yes, it’s hard to describe in words really. I personally like the following:
The feeling of the world, the designs are very wavey and flow well into one another, just like warcraft 3, only on a very large scale.
The music is frigging gorgeous.
Combat isnt boring, it feels solid, but not TOO involved. Its funny, I did it for 5 hours and dont really feel like I’ve been doing anything that was repetitive.
Crafting was well done, I’ve learned skinning, so as an added bonus to killing wolves, I skin them and sell the hides for a decent copper.
Partying isnt the only way to get exp. Infact, the only real reason to PT in this game is for the quests! Thats one aspect I’ve REALLY started to enjoy.
The animations fucking rule for the characters, and yes, I’m talking about the crazy dancing too.
it is controlled like EQ, which means walk with the keyboard and look with the mouse (if you want to) which I’m very used to and love.
The screen isnt clouded up by stupid windows or chat bars, nearly everything is neat and orderly. Small and just where it needs to be, at the bottom, not hindering the view of all the action and the gorgeous world.
Oh, and the first time I saw some of the buildings that were straight out of WC3 I was about to scream with glee. Its like you get shrunk down and put right into WC3 and that’s not a bad thing.
Like I said though, its really hard to describe why I am enjoying it so much with words alone. But seriously, it certainly doesnt FEEL like all the other MMORPGs out there and everyone who is playing it right now will concur. There are no “Zones” the world is fully free roaming, and you can swim/jump which wasnt possible in ffxi.
To tell you the truth, the beta is worth paying for. There’s some tiny glitches that are popping up, mostly having to do with the way mobs spawn, but thats not a big deal seeing as how huge the world is.
all and all, The only thing I can say is “If you arent playing it right now, you cant say anything bad about it because you dont know what you are talking about. I’m playing it and I for one can say that it kicks the shizzle out any MMORPG I’ve played since EQ. And if the world is as vast as it seems, EQ wont even hold up to this.”
So no more of that, oooh its just getting good reviews cause its got a blizzard logo, shit. This game is good, regardless of the logo. But my guess is that you all wont believe me and will keep up this angsty anti-blizzard crap just cause you want to be stubborn rather than be excited about a good MMORPG.
I never said the game only gets good reviews because it has the blizzard logo, gah I said that’s the only thing that seems to stand out from the otherwise average MMORPG fare It still doesn’t sound all that hot from what you described (the swimming/jumping is nice, though) but I’ll see when I get on. And as I already stated, I don’t put it down because it’s popular rarsrawr whateverthefuck (I mean, I play FFXI and I’m definitely not a FF fan :P), but because it doesn’t seem to have anything really unique, just well-worked out basics.
See I tried the revolver in my mouth, I even went so far as to pull the trigger, but then you have this whole unfinished business crap, and here I am, an undead fiend. Kind of boring.
So far, from my experiences, they have taken all the things that worked well in other mmorpgs, like simplistic fighting (doesnt involve that stupid target lock on crap), crafting that is easy to pick up and can be very rewarding, the thrill of exploring uncharted areas, the quirky and unique visual style of War Craft 3, Intense music that sets the mood better than most movies (IMO the music here is better than lord of the rings), and other little details. Graphically it does things correct that we’ve all strived for, Capes. They dont look stupid.
All in all, YES it is similar to other MMORPGs, but this one improoves in almost every way on the things that others failed horribly at.
