Gah, I’m playing FFL through again, and my mutants suck beyond all belief. I’m currently getting money for equipment before I fight Sei-Ryu, and just look at their stats:

I’ve been trying, I’ve spent thousands on Spellbooks and testing what crappy inherit magics they have, but the growth rate is so smal it’s not worth it.
I usually kick ass with mutants by fighting. Don’t bother buying them spell books that much, because what makes them cool in battle (To me) is that they can raise or lower stats. Spell books are nifty for later in the game. But, that’s just how I went about it. Not saying that’s the only way, or the best way.
Meh, as of now, I have only two SpellBooks: Cure, and Fire. The Fire one’s for when I’m fighting more than one enemy, and the Cure one’s for when I’m just about to stop at an inn, since each spell costs about 33GP in total, so it saves me a lot of money.
For some reason Mutants seem to get pretty strong in a very short order for me. Maybe I’m just lucky. I have used skills, weapons and spell books with Mutants though. So maybe that effects it.
Sorta. Their Mana and HP are still crap, but the male’s strength is at 97 right now, the female’s Agility 99, and they both have increased defense. So, I think that it turned out alright.
The one thing that probably makes my power jump is the desire to buy a bunch of flare books in world three. So I end up using spells to conserve money as I save up for about 8 flare books. Yes 4-8 flares book.

Definitely. You have a small window to buy them. Aka don’t move forward too much in the plot. However if you’re using mutants they’re worth it.
High damage to all even. Maybe not the highest. But four mutants flaring enemies will leave most dead. Just remember not to waste them. How much you can waste them depends on how much you buy.
Of course without mutants they are just huge wastes of money in the end.
Ugh, that annoyed me so much that the great shop in World 3 closed after you got further into the plot. I never got a chance to really get anything when I last played because I forgot it did that -_-
