I am almost certain the second leveling stage I mentioned does not require you to have beaten the game.
Magic is fucking overpowered o_o. Should I bother going tri elemental?
No, I don’t think so either, but who the heck gets to that level before finishing the game?
Mmm… well, depends on how much work you want to put in it. The bonuses from weaknesses are nice at first, so it won’t hurt you to try and have at least two elements. Don’t put TOO much work into it though, it’s way more effective to just focus on Star, the “neutral” 4th element, which is unnafected by resistance/weakness stats. You learn it from the 4th tier Mages (Star Mages).
4th …tier…mage? I only have 3 mages available. Wind, Ice and Fire.
You unlock new tiers (Higher forms of a certain class) by leveling characters from that class, so leveling either a Fire, Ice or Wind Mage up to a certain point should unlock the Star Mage. Normally new tiers just have higher stats, but Mages are special in that the first three are actually the same with different elements, and that different tiers learn different spells (5th Tier learns all the spells from Ice/Wind/Fire except the Tera levels, and the 6th learns all four elements, except once again for the Tera ones).
By the way, Tera is the highest level spell type in the game. For example, as you level your Fire mage, she’ll get Fire, then Mega Fire, Giga Fire, Omega Fire and finally Tera Fire. The Tera spells (Lvl 100+) can only be learned by the first four tiers.
Is there a difference between tier 1-4 elemental mages? Like should I worry about transmigrating my casters?
Ice/Wind/Fire have the exact same stats, only different element. Star’s stats are probably a bit higher since it needs to be unlocked at higher levels.
By the way, I can’t remember what exactly it was, but there are some VERY minor differences between male and female casters (Male/Female Clerics, or Mages/Skulls). The differences are nearly irrelevant with warriors but, while I can’t remember the details, the female casters were slightly better.
Just wait until you learn the art of setting up some awesome Geo chains, Sinistral. The only place to really do that is in the item world, and you REALLY need to plan it out. But when it works out, it’s AWESOME, and a lot of the time you’re almost gaurenteed to get to Lv9 in the maps bonus items. I’ve gotten some great stuff that way, especially in higher level items…
Dammit, you’re all making me want to play it again!
The spike in difficulty with the final battle of Disgaea isn’t as high as the one in La Pucelle. I’ve only ever finished LP once, and I’ve tried the final boss once or twice since then but he’s kicked my ass each time. I’ve bitchslapped the final boss of Disgaea many times, though. I haven’t, however, bothered at all with the extra stuff. I like that it’s there, and New Game + is always a sweet addition, but all the bonus stuff requires too much goddamn extra work. I’ve never gotten a character over Lv105 or so yet.
Flonne is useless, Etna and Laharl are great. However, if you WANT to make Flonne a bit useful, best have her sire a few mages, then learn those mages skills. FYI, anyone who sires a character (not just Laharl has to do it) they can potentially learn the skills of the character they sire, but it’s time consuming. Say if Flonne sires a cleric and you want her to learn Heal, then you position Flonne in a square adjacent to the cleric, and while she’s there Flonne has access to the cleric’s spells. She then will have to cast it a bunch of times, and eventually she’ll learn it permanently. Of course, if you want Flonne to get the higher level spells then you’ll need to level up the cleric ANYWAY, so it’s kinda futile really. But, that’s the only way to actually make Flonne decent. (her magic starts off pretty good, so it’s not a total waste of time…)
I’ve never really used thieves, since stealing is a cumbersome process. Gunners are great since their damage is based on their Aim stat, so beefing up some Aim boosting items in the item world can give them a ridiculous damage output. But they tend to fill out more later in the game when you’re used enough to the Item world to be able to do that. I never used Archers, though, since the damage formula on bows is needlessly complicated to try to figure out as it uses two stats instead of just one.
That’s about all the advice I can remember, as someone who just played the main game and never touched the optional stuff. I haven’t played it in forever, though. But you’ve got me tempted.
You only have to cast a spell like 5 times I think to level it to a point where you can cast it without having to be standing next to a pupil.
You only say that about Flonne because you haven’t done any of the extra stuff. Pumping out a Lvl 100 character with all the skills is extremely easy once you can do CoO3, at which point her stat growth really shows as she can nuke the everliving shit out of anything with Tera Star better than anyone else.
Before that… well, it’s not like you really need anyone but Laharl and a Healer in the regular game if you level a bit.
Thieves are the absolute worst class in the game, but you will need one eventually as you try to get the strongest weapons from the Item Gods. Once I reached Second Cycle, I turned my Galaxy Mage into one. Since she already had wand and spell proficiency at very high levels and a good reincarnation bonus, it turned to be not completely useless.
Gunners are good, but at that point you might as well hold off until you get Angels or even Majins.
Archers serve no purpose other than to unlock Angels. They’re a really bad class and there are plenty other characters that can do exactly the same as them, only better. Bows are a pretty lowsy weapon as well.
Alright SE. If I were to take my current Endgame save and restart a new cycle, what are the sorts of things I should be doing to prepare for all this extra content? I’ve heard how great a leveling map CoO3 is, but I’ve never been able to unlock the Cave of Ordeals (actually I’ve only been able to open the Prinny World, the council is damn stubborn)
First you’ll want at least one character that can do shit. That’ll be Laharl. Prinny World should be fairly useful for leveling right now. Try to get him to something like Lvl 110-130. If you can get one or two more attackers to that level, all the better.
Then just finish up the exams at the Dark Congress until you have the option to unlock Cave of Ordeals. This’ll be mostly a chance thing, try to get an audience with as little participants as possible, bribe the REALLY high level ones and when they still reject you (And they will), kill everyone else.
Now, the first two stages in CoO are relatively easy if you finished the game and Prinny World. Everyone is around Lvl 110 or so. One of them has a bunch of Nekomatas that you can combine into high-level enemies with zilch HP, which makes for excellent EXP. At this point you should get at least three high level attackers (Laharl included) that can preferably use some 3x3 area attacks (Swords work wonders). You’ll also want one or two spellcasters that can do the same.
Now, CoO3 is a bitch at first. If I remember correctly, the enemies are around Lvl 200 and they have high DEF/RES to boot. This will likely be the toughest part of the leveling spree: Actually beating these guys. You need to train everyone in the previous stages until you can beat everyone here. One thing that I noticed is that they usually have EITHER high DEF or RES, not both at the same time, so some are weaker to magic and some are to physical.
After that, it becomes pretty easy. Just alternate whoever gets to do the killing and watch the levels roll in. One look at the stage should be enough to see why it’s so awesome. Once you can clear it just by spamming 3x3 attacks (Lvl 200 characters or so) it’ll be time to start with actual character-building/resurrection-stacking/item-leveling/skill-exchanging crazyness.
EDIT: GAH, I forgot this. If you haven’t already, start stacking up Statisticians from the Item World. I think the limit was 600 or so. These give you bonus EXP for each kill, so you’ll be using a full set in one weapon that you’ll switch around depending one who you want to level.
I’m finding Flonne to be really powerful. I had her sire an ice mage. I have another bishop that sired a fire mage and between those 2, I annihilate entire maps. I’m finding Etna to be one less used characters. I’m at Jotunheim and Flonne’s level 17 and Etna is around 10. Flonne just raped face in Molten Core.
Some tips I haven’t seen here yet. I think if you bribe someone and leave after failing to pass something, the guy will be more likely to agree with you later. Of course, that will take forever, so a better dark court tip is to make one super powerful guy on your side. Then, start a fight and throw all the other enemies into the very powerful guy on your side. If your guy is at a higher level than the guys you throw at him, they will fuse into a guy on your side. Thus you can win without being anywhere near your opponents’ level. Of course, you still need to be strong enough to take a few hits.
One of Disgaea’s worst faults is that despite the number of weapons, most of the suck. Spears, Etna’s specialty, aren’t really the best due to their awkward area skills and overal deficiency at mass killings. It’d be best to focus on using a Warrior or Ronin with a sword for now.
The max is 300.
I had my Etna do Axes, actually. Axes are cool. I made A samurai for spears, I think. I’ll have to agree, spears are kinda awkward to handle, but they still have their uses.
Holy shit @ star magic.
Star Magic was the shit.
I really do want to play this game again.
Scouts are useful as hell when you want to change the Geo things. And the Turrent they can create is efficient for knocking out out-of-place gems and enemies. Give them a gun and nothing but AGI boosting gear.
Fuck Bows. Fuck Spears.
Eventually the game comes down to being able to kill something in one-to-four hits in order to progress. When you get there, it’s nothing but having to powerlevel and blaze a trail through enemies.
I transmigrated a character when a class two tiers above it became avaialble, and then used a grinding map once or twice to get it up to speed with newly and significantly boosted stats.
