Amon, I agree with you in that in a forum run by a site called “RPGClassics” would have members who play RPGs. As they have since the begining of time, RPGs take more time to complete, than other games. I think they’re the ones who began the “save” option we see in almost every game today.
However, just because they play RPGs doesn’t mean, it’s the only thing they do.
That being said, I can symphasize with you a little more than others because I am as you put it, “A hardcore” RPG player. Some people just aren’t into the level building, number crunching sort of RPGs anyway. We can express our love for the games, but we can’t make other people play them.
I introduced GG Crono to Disgaea and he got hooked. You meet SG and he isn’t into it. People are different and we just have to accept it.
Well, I did notice that I ended up disagreeing with you a lot in the past few days, but no…I’m not like that. Music is just a topic I feel strongly about, Disgaea is something I argue strongly about here, because I’m the ONLY damn person on this board who thinks that Disgaea isn’t something totally amazing. I try to represent the entire “Negative Opinion” side over here. Don’t sweat it so much. At least we’re not talking about La Pucelle, lol. After I played La Pucelle, my respect for Disgaea rose tenfold.
I agree that Digaea is not an excellent game. It is just something way out there, like a break from the normal RPG.
And, I never said anyone on this forum was one of theose HardCore RPG Fanatics. It does seem that it is the stereotype for us, though. 40 Years old, lives in parent’s basement, no job, knows the name of every D&D game that ever came out, etc.
I think the game is alright. Some of the songs were fantastic and I love the story. However, I don’t like having to level tons. I don’t mind if you’re leveling to get money for armor and stuff (I’m thinking now of the BoF series) because that usually doesn’t take long and keeps you at a nice level for the game to progress. I think that Disgaea’s leveling is a bit excessive. It wouldn’t have been so bad if only the person who killed the monster got experience. Now leveling seems like a chore to progress in the storyline.
Things I liked about it:
Originality: It’s got a lot of very originial ideas.
Item Worlds: Useful game play, and just a cool idea.
Multiple Endings: This is always good.
Ridiculous Amount of Gameplay: This is one of those games that almost never, ever, ends. I like that, usually. Also the fact that if you want it to, it can end pretty quickly is nice. It’s got a huge number of optional quests, so people who like excessively long games can enjoy it, and people who don’t can just finish it.
Ridiculous Customization: Nice, if you like it. Also, as Skankin’ pointed out, completely needless, so that, again, you don’t have to do it to finish the game.
Downsides:
Characterization: Almost 90% of the game is probably side quests/levling. Side quests don’t have much characterization. There isn’t much characterization.
Forced Leveling: To finish many quests, your characters must just get to so damned high a level that is often isn’t worth it.
Multiple Endings: When the game never ends, making people play through it at least eight times to figure out all the endings is just curel.
Difficulty: Unless you intentionally made it hard for yourself, this game was really, really easy.
Also, the game is very overhyped, but that isn’t it’s fault.
Basically, I like the game, it can be fun, but it certainly is not the body of Jesus shoved in a hole in Africa and made into a CD from his dust, or anything of the sort.
I beat Disgaea, but I had so many other games to complete I didn’t go back to level up more or get the extras. I beat it with a measly level 100? Laharl. Good game…I enjoyed it alot…funny stuff too.
