deleting stuff

I use windows explorer a lot on my pc (os = win98). For the past few months, every time I’d delete a folder or more than 5 files, the whole pc would slow the hell down and WE would be totally unresponsive for a few minutes. Suggestions on how to fix this annoyance would be appreciated.

Maybe defragging your HD would help.

Maybe getting more ram or a new processer would help?

Yeah, we forgot to ask what your comp. specs are.

Defrag. Your files are too fragmented, so it takes a whiel to find all the data from them all.

Just make sure you run a scandisk first, and make sure there are no processes running in the background.

And you’d better have a lot of patience, since defragging an HD that’s very full may take hours in some cases.

I have a problem with my scandisk. Every time I use it it keeps restarting before it finishes. I close all my programs and I even disconnect my cable modem while I run it. I haven’t defragmented my computer in such a long time because I can’t get part scandisk.

Woohoo! for once I didn’t have a scandick typo!

wow, you’re right…i see nothing wrong with that…:o

but anyway, yeah, try defragging your hd. that always helps on my computer…

Defragging should be done overnight.

here is what I always do.

  1. Delete any un-needed stuff (add-remove programs)
  2. Do a disk cleanup
  3. Do a scandisk
  4. Do a disk defragger.

and if that doesn’t work, try using the Maintinance Wizard

and if that doesn’t work, time for a format.

I’m close to formatting, I just cringe at all the backing up I have to do

Me too, probably. I can’t do Scandisk or defrag because they keep restarting (and yes, I’ve tried both in Safe Mode as well).

I can’t do Defrag either. 80 gigs. 2 free gigs. Do the math. v.v

Use task manager (Control+Alt+Delete) and close all programs(if ME and below) except for systray, and explorer.

x: that would make me hate life.

And yeah, I’ve been putting thought into formating my hd. It kinda needs it since its never had one and its been befouled by my sister (1 week on her husband’s pc and it went down the toilet)

Yes, well now you know my rage. Intimately. craves burnination

Oh yeah, ever considered getting a 7200 RPM HD? I think it won’t lag down even when near-full.

Ah yes… The wonders of FAT32… :thud:

Thank god I run a GOOD Filesystem. Both NTFS and Ext2 are way better than FAT. Especially considering Ext2 gets defragged automaticly in Linux. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyhow, don’t have much else to add; Reformat should be your best option.
